British Freshwater Fish (40 Species Underwater)

10:37
In Britain we have 53 species of freshwater fish (including non natives and fish that visit the lower reaches of rivers like sea bass, flounder) Over the past year I've been trying to film as many species as possible and will continue to do so. The other half of my film will be available as a DVD and include issues like eel decline, getting children to interact with nature and bringing fish to the attention of nature NGO's. Music by Kevin MacLeod Disclaimer: Pumpkinseed footage was shot in France but the species does occur in several lakes in the UK, Some species were also shot in tanks to get more detail then would be possible in the wild. © www.jackperksphotography.com Footage is Copyrighted to Jack Perks and not for use without permission/sale

Bullhead (Cottus gobio) Underwater UK

01:05
A small, strangely shaped fish, the bullhead (also known as the 'miller's thumb') has a very large head, relatively large fins and a tapering body. It lives on the bottom of fast, stony rivers and streams feeding on invertebrates, such as mayfly and caddisfly larvae, and the eggs of other fish. Spawning occurs between February and June: the eggs are laid underneath stones or in pits and the male guards and cares for them attentively. © www.jackperksphotography.com Footage is Copyrighted to Jack Perks and not for use without permission/sale

They are usually found in gravel and rocky-bottomed slow-flowing waters with high dissolved oxygen content. A typical adult barbel will range from 25 to 100 cm in length and weigh anywhere between 200 g and 10 kg, although weights of 200 g are more common. © www.jackperksphotography.com Footage is Copyrighted to Jack Perks and not for use without permission/sale
European Eel (Anguilla anguilla) Underwater UK

01:14
European eel has declined by up to 95% over the last 25-30 years. Reasons for its decline are suggested as being a combination of habitat loss, barriers to migration, parasites, pollution, over-fishing and climate change affecting oceanic currents. © www.jackperksphotography.com Footage is Copyrighted to Jack Perks and not for use without permission/sale
