4 Tricks to be the Center of Attention in Every Situation

04:18
Thank you for watching, and be sure to subscribe for more fascinating content on this YouTube Channel! Video created with VideoScribe Music from VideoScribe Hey everyone, I am Peter from TopThink, and today we discover the 4 tricks to be the center of attention in every situation But quickly before that, make sure to subscribe to TopThink so you don’t miss out on our new animated series about psychology, science, and lots of other nerdy stuff. Now, let’s begin. Number 1: Use someone’s name when making a statement Dale Carnegie, a famous author and public speaker, once wrote that “a person's name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language.” Carnegie was right. Using someone’s name captures their attention immediately, because few group situations will focus on one individual. Thus, when people hear their name, it’s a very pleasant surprise. Here is exactly how to use this principle: Imagine that you’re at a social event with your friends. Things seem to be going well for other people, but you aren’t feeling super social. Then, one of your friends notices you and mentions your name. Immediately, your attention is captured and all your focus is turned towards that person. As if it was magic, what your friend is about to say has suddenly become much more interesting, and they have successfully implemented this concept. Number 2: A genuine smile. The smile is one of the most underrated tools in the social toolbox. The movement communicates openness, releases tension, and can make a fabulous first impression. However, there is some deeper psychology at work here. According to Psychology Today, even a forced smile can induce a good mood, and make other people want to talk to you. In addition, genuine smiles are scarily contagious. Here is how. When we are interacting with other people, we use our brains a lot. Your mind has to interpret small differences in facial patterns, and actually recreates these patterns in the brain. Since humans naturally mimic facial expressions, the people you are interacting with will start to smile as well. Essentially, smiling draws an aura of positivity and energy around you. As a result, people will focus more on you in social situations, and associate you with having a good time. But don’t take my word for it. The next time you are in a relatively mellow or underwhelming conversation, give a big smile and watch the mood quickly lighten up. Number 3: Wear something interesting. Now of course, the word interesting is pretty open ended. But what I mean by “interesting” is something that will be brought up in a discussion naturally, at which point the conversation will be directed towards you. For example, I personally love to wear shirts that look like this. People are always quick to laugh and ask me about it, and it is a great conversation starter. If you do decide to wear something funny, make sure to be confident about it. Wear it proudly. People are strongly drawn to those who seem comfortable in any situation. If you don’t have a dog or cat shirt, try to dress as nicely as possible for your social event. Dressing well will make you far more likely to be noticed by others and will help you stay calm and confident. Number 4: Give compliments Giving people truthful, honest compliments will make them like you a lot more. Look for subtle things about someone that you know are deliberate. For example, a common trend for women these days is to shape their eyebrows, but a lot of guys don’t notice this. Similarly, men often put a lot of effort into their workouts or their hair. Look for the best in people, and watch them respond enthusiastically when you notice. In conclusion, when you’re in a conversation, try using someone’s name to capture that individual’s attention. Try to genuinely smile as much as you can, as long as it’s not too forced or fake. Wear eye-catching clothing that’s sure to capture the attention of others. Finally, give real compliments. Like the saying goes, give, and you shall receive. Thank you for watching TopThink, and be sure to like and subscribe for more fascinating content in this YouTube Channel. HOW TO INSTANTLY PERSUADE ANYONE!

04:31
Thank you for watching and make sure to subscribe for more fascinating content! Persuade People or anyone 2017 - How to with 3 Psychology Tricks Animations created by videoscribe. Music is provided by videoscribe and available for commercial use. Transcript: Hey everyone, I am Peter from TopThink, and today we explore 3 psychology tricks to persuade anyone of anything. But quickly before that, make sure to subscribe to TopThink so you don’t miss out on our new animated series about psychology, science, and lots of other nerdy stuff. Now, let’s begin. Number one: Power sentences. We all learn in school that sentences have structures. And, there are many different types of sentences. But this is just the boring stuff. What they didn’t teach you is a concept that has many names, but for this video, we will call it the power sentence. The power sentence has a very simple, yet very effective structure. It begins as any other sentence would, but ends with a key component: a strong, emotional word. Ending with this kind of word follows a principle in psychology known as the serial position effect. This principle states that our brains are wired to remember the beginning, and especially the end of detailed lists or experiences, more than any other part. Thus, because power sentences end with strong, emotional words, this word carries the most weight in the sentence. For example, a regular person unfamiliar with this tool might say something like: “Jimmy, you should really take the trash out.” However, the power version of this would go something like: “Jimmy, taking the trash out is IMPORTANT. Please do it NOW.” This combines two power sentences to form a much stronger message. Number two: Social proof When making decisions, people are flawed. We don’t always go with the most logical or ethical choice. We often find ourselves confused and looking to outside sources to help us make the decision. This is exactly where social proof comes in. Imagine you’re at a new job, and you come into the office to find all of your coworkers emailing their clients instead of calling. You know there isn’t any policy against calling clients, and you don’t really prefer emailing to calling or vice versa. But at the end of the day, you decide to use email. Why? Because it’s what everybody else is doing. This is a perfect example of social proof. Naturally, people want to fit in. They don’t want to be an outlier. Thus, if you can convince the person you are trying to persuade that a big majority of other people are doing whatever you want this person to do, they are far more likely to do it. Donald Trump, whatever you may think of him politically, understands this principle very well. Instead of pointing to concrete details and specific facts, he often uses social proof to justify what he says or does. Often, he just simply states: everybody agrees with me. And immediately, his claims seem more credible to the average viewer. Number three: scarcity. Have you ever been confused as to why people value precious rocks and metals so much? The answer, of course, is that they are rare. And why do people strive to obtain Lamborghinis and Ferraris? Sure, they’re fast and pretty. But really, people want them because few others can afford them. They’re not only a sign of wealth, but of distinction, and separation. Objects or events that are rare are generally given extra value in our society. Lamborghinis are special for largely the same reason that lightening is. If every car on the road was a Lamborghini, or if every night’s sky was filled with thunderstorms, we wouldn’t marvel at them as we do today. If you can persuade someone that something is rare or may not be available for them to obtain at a later date, they far more likely to get it right then and there. In conclusion, end sentences with strong words to create a more powerful message. Convince someone that everybody else is doing something, and they will do it too. And finally, recognize that rare, or seemingly rare things are given extra value in our society. 5 Tricks on How to Tell if Someone is Lying

05:56
Thank you for watching, and be sure to subscribe for more fascinating content on this YouTube Chanel! 5 Tricks on How to Tell if Someone is Lying! Video made with VideoScribe. Music from VideoScribe. Transcript: Hey everyone, I am Peter from TopThink, and today we discover how to tell if someone is lying But quickly before that, make sure to subscribe to TopThink so you don’t miss out on our new animated series about psychology, science, and lots of other nerdy stuff. Now, let’s begin. Number 1: A behavioral pause If you ask someone a question such as “Where were you exactly one week ago,” they are pretty likely to stop and think before answering. However, if you ask an easy question, often in yes or no format, such as “did you rob the bank exactly one week ago,” someone who is innocent is likely to answer very quickly. On the other hand, someone who is lying will often pause before answering. How long will they pause? Of course, it depends. However, if it seems like the pause was due to shock or anxiety, it is more likely that this person is lying to you. Number 2: Defensive body positioning. When you are lying about something serious, it is an evolutionary response to protect yourself from potential harm. Your subconscious is aware that you may be at risk, and so your body adjusts to keep itself guarded. Entertain this scenario: You’re talking with an acquaintance, and you begin to suspect him of lying. After asking him some pressing questions, he grabs a glass of water and holds it in front of him instead of setting it back down. Holding something in-between you and somebody else is a common defensive body position. Someone might also cross their arms, clench their fists, or tighten their lips. The point is: if you see these kinds of signals, they might be lying. Number 3: Fake Emotions The entire process of lying is a façade. It’s a presentation, and therefore when people lie, they often display many fake emotions. For example, fake smiles. Liars will often try to fake a smile to seem more likeable or comfortable with situation. They are trying to convince you that they have nothing to hide. Fake smiles are usually only performed with the mouth, instead of the whole face. So, if you suspect someone of lying, watch to see if they smile. Then, observe whether their eyes and upper face are part of the movement. If not, they are probably lying. Another common fake emotion is surprise. Right after you identify a potential lie, say something off subject and surprising. However, don’t make it too unbelievable. You simply want to say something notable. Liars will often display overly-dramatic responses to off-topic surprises. For example, imagine that you are talking to your friend, and you suspect that they just lied about being state champion in track back in high school. So, you say: “hey, did you know that I also ran track in high school?” Your statement is designed to be mildly surprising, but your friend reacts in an over the top manner, saying: “wow, are you serious? That’s amazing!” In truth, it’s not really amazing that you ran track in high school. But, your friend wants to distract from the previous lie, and so they put emphasis on the new direction of the conversation. In this case, we can be pretty confident that your friend is not being honest.

10 Philosophical Questions that will Change Your Life

Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe for more fascinating content on this YouTube Channel! Video created using VideoScribe. Music from VideoScribe. Transcript: •Hey everyone, I am Peter from TopThink, and today we explore 10 questions in philosophy that will change your life • But quickly before that, make sure to subscribe to TopThink so you don’t miss out on our new animated series about psychology, science, and lots of other nerdy stuff. Now, let’s begin. • Number 1: Should you live for the present, or for the future? • Some people party all the time, others work all the time. Some people spend their money like it was their last day, while others save everything they can. This question in philosophy seems to define the choices we make and ultimately outlines our romantic lives, our careers, and pretty much everything else, too. • Ask yourself this: what are the things that you spend the most time doing? Then ask: do these activities satisfy immediate wants and needs, or those of the future? • Number 2: Do we have free will? • Before you just quickly say yes, consider this well-known argument: Atoms and particles, from a scientific standpoint, behave in probabilistic ways. Even when you get a random number from a computer, it’s not as random as you might think. • In fact, RNG’s, or random number generators, actually use extremely complex algorithms to generate numbers. The output appears to be random, and for all practical purposes is random, but in reality, it is not. • So again, science tells us that atoms and particles behave in probabilistic ways. But our brains, which contain, so to speak, our consciousness, are made up of atoms and particles, logically leading to the conclusion that our minds behave in probabilistic ways. So answer me this: do we really have free will? • Number 3: Is an absolute truth possible? • An absolute truth is something that is universally true, no matter the circumstances. For example, it’s normally true to say that murder is wrong. But would it have been wrong to kill Hitler or Stalin before they executed all those people? Most would say no. So, can you name any truth that is absolute? • Number 4: What does it mean to be conscious? • Imagine this scenario: a robot exists such that it can respond to any question with decent accuracy, it can discern images like your eyes can, but with a camera. It can move, it can solve problems, it even recharges like you do when you sleep and consume food. Essentially, it has all of the functions of living animals, even if it has different levels of competence in some of these areas than we do. Now face reality: some modern robots do have these functions. • Naturally then, one must ask: What separates this robot from you, other than the fact that it is made from different materials? • Number 5: What is the first thing you think about when you wake up in the morning? • Mornings are generally when our mind is freest. In Latin, this is known as the Tabula Rasa, which translates to a “blank slate.” It means that your mind hasn’t yet been troubled with day to day worries and activities. Thus, your first thoughts in the morning often reflect upon the things in life that matter to you the most. • For example, when you wake up, you may start thinking about your kids or your spouse. Perhaps you fantasize about your passions. Whatever it may be, reflect upon it. • Number 6: What are your values, and are you being true to them? • Now, I could ask you to write down all of your values like some self-help guru, but it’s a lot to juggle, especially when you’re watching a video. So just think about one of them. What is your number one value? Then, answer the hard question: how true are you to that value? • Number 7: If you could design your own life, how would you do it? • You may think that this is really easy to answer. After all, you can have anything you want: an expensive car, the perfect spouse, a giant mansion, and six pack abs. • But once you have all this, what do you have to look forward to? Would you live out the rest of your life just acquiring more stuff? And finally, would you be satisfied knowing that you did not actually earn what you have? Is that not part of the reward... (more would exceed limit)
