A conduction-cooled, robust enclosure together with a scalable CPU board and a freely configurable I/O board - these are the features characterizing MEN's customized "off-the-shelf" box and display computers. The family of the modular box PCs from MEN is constantly growing and comprises standard versions for the transportation market, for industrial automation or for wireless communication and data storage. The manifold fields of application include e.g. telemetry and SCADA systems, passenger information, display control, surveillance and security systems, communication from the vehicle to the control center or robotics and machine control. Variable sizes for the housings conforming to different protection classes can be realized as easily as a fast customization of the I/O board without changing the CPU board. Therefore the flexible box PCs are a cost-effective solution for many applications and can be a compact alternative to 19'' systems.

MEN ist seit Jahren ein zuverlässiger Partner der Deutschen Bahn AG (DB). In Zusammenarbeit mit der DB entwickelte MEN die sogenannte "Mobile Integration Platform" (kurz DB-MIP), ein auf CompactPCI® PlusIO basierendes System, das für den gesamten Datentransfer zwischen dem fahrenden Zug und dem Rechenzentrum verantwortlich ist. Via WLAN und/oder UMTS, GSM-P und optional GSM-R werden Reservierungs-, Stamm-, und Diagnosedaten, aber auch Fahrgastinformationen, übermittelt und ausgewertet. Der CompactPCI®-PlusIO-Standard ermöglicht hierbei die einfache Integration schneller, auf PCI Express® basierender Kommunikationsschnittstellen und die Anbindung leistungsfähiger Datenspeicher. Gleichzeitig können durch die Rückwärtskompatibilität zu CompactPCI® GSM-R sowie eine Fülle von Analog- und Digital-I/Os, seriellen Schnittstellen oder Industriebussystemen, wie zum Beispiel CAN, weiterhin genutzt werden. Auf FPGA basierende I/Os erleichtern die Anpassung des Systems auf die spezifischen Schnittstellenanforderungen der einzelnen ICE-Baureihen. As many of the airborne applications are safety-relevant, computer components have to be developed according to DO-254 and DO-178B, and have to conform to safety levels DAL-E up to DAL-B or DAL-A. Critical parts have to prove fitness for flight. The computer architecture is fault-tolerant, based on redundancy and availability architecture, and built-in test equipment (BITE). Safe avionic computers are mostly realized as custom developments. Certifiable platforms based on COTS solutions are rare.

MEN and the MIP - A Success Concept for Railways

For years MEN has been a reliable partner of Deutsche Bahn AG (DB). In cooperation with Deutsche Bahn, MEN has developed the "DB-MIP" system, which is short for "Mobile Integration Platform". The CompactPCI® PlusIO system is responsible for the entire data transfer between the moving train and the control center. Reservation, master and diagnosis data, but also passenger information is transmitted and processed via WLAN and/or UMTS, GSM-P and optionally GSM-R. The CompactPCI® PlusIO standard allows an easy integration of fast PCI Express® based communication interfaces and the connection of high-performance data storage. At the same time you can go on using GSM-R and many other analog and digital I/Os, serial interfaces or industrial bus systems such as CAN thanks to the backward compatibility with CompactPCI®. FPGA-based I/Os make it easier to adapt a system to the specific interface requirements of the different ICE train types. Jens Haeger, IT expert at Deutsche Bahn, explains the application and the reason why the rugged system is so important for the railway company.
