NEIL HICKS ART at Soho Galleries

02:01
Neil Hicks Contemporary Paintings at Soho Galleries Sydney Visit www.sohogalleries.net Catalogue on application. Everything in our world, everything that exists, everything we can see can be re-interpreted.I validate my existence by creating concepts other than what the world presents and challenge myself to imagine alternatives. When we accept without question we forfeit the power to control our own lives, so inquire, research, confront, imagine.Sometimes we are swamped by advertising and must repeatedly decide between what to observe and what not to.It has become subconscious for most of us. The flat, decorative image is everywhere. we take it for granted. It is this obsession with flat images that makes contemporary painting a remedy to kitsch and mediocrity. For me the canvass is the arena where the impossible becomes at least plausible, at most inspirational. The disguising of a brush stroke without ongoing references, to this painter, should be saying something more than “this is not a pipe”……By directing the paint within the illusion of a fixed form, the image is emancipated and can stretch out and suggest nothing.I would like to think that my work celebrates the medium in which the imagery dwells.

Amica Whincop Art Exhibition

03:05
Amica WHINCOP Essence Exhibition , 2018 Soho Galleries Sydney, Exhibition catalogue on application. Visit- www.sohogalleries.net. Art statement “Pare down to the essence, but don’t remove the poetry” Leonard Koren Essence is an exhibition of paintings examining the places where land meets the sea. To create this body of work I have focused specifically on the point where water meets rock, two very different forces coming together. Each of the works has been inspired by places where this occurs – Noosa Heads, Byron Bay and further afield to Johannesburg in South Africa and the beaches of Bali. Where water meets rock, there is life. But there is also change. My work reflects this contrast through colour, texture and shape. When making my paintings I rely on water, gravity and air pressure to mimic the processes and formations of nature. Using white paint, I mask out areas that feel distracting or unnecessary. Doing this allows beautiful new forms to emerge within a soothing, meditative space. For millennia we have been inextricably drawn to areas where land meets the sea, where water erodes and shapes rock and rock guides and filters water. Their connection is necessary and enriching, and together water and rock remain essentially simple and complex. They are one of nature's most inspiring artistic pairings and within these complementary elements, nature manifests effortless beauty, comfort and life-giving good. Essence is my homage to these powerful forces. Amica Whincop 2018.

Group Paintings Exhibition. Visit Soho Galleries Sydney www.sohogalleries.net . Contemporary paintings by Sussanne Morton, Paul Battams, Peta Laurisen. Exhibition catalogue on application. Contemporary paintings group exhibition, showing a floral fusion of three painting styles. Paul Battams 'Over the years Paul Battams has developed his own range of paintsand steel blades. Successive changes in formulae, have allowed him to create his unique style, allowing him to fashion a different path towards the unique and the individual.' Sussanne Morton Exploring the Australian landscape, or charming old historic gardens is like entering a mystical kingdom where I become one with nature. Where colours leap out, begging to come play on my palette. I observe the light and its wonderful effects and dip my brush in them. I watch and wait. I return each day, each year. I wait till sunlit petals and illuminated colour dance with shadows in delightful harmony to create the images I photograph and transpose onto canvas. Peta Laurisen Peta Laurisen's artwork is evocative, powerful and distinctive - an absolute must-see. She works on canvas using acrylic paint and builds up layers of colour to create a translucent effect. Peta is inspired by nature and her striking images of flowers are highly detailed and intricate works of art. NEVILLE PILVEN ART EXHIBITION

02:21
NEVILLE PILVEN Art at SOHO Contemporary Australian Landscapes and contemporary group sculpture.Visit Soho Galleries Sydney www.sohogalleries.net http://www.sohogalleries.net/artists.php Artwork details and exhibition price list available on application. Neville Pilven Artist Statement During the warmer months Melbourne artist, Neville Pilven, spends a lot of time painting at his cottage on the fringe of the Wimmera in Western Central Victoria. His cottage-studio is located in a quiet rural area once mined for gold. Pilven’s semi-realist landscape paintings border on the poetic, with historic folk references employed as pictorial iconography; an old tank, a remnant of a fence, or a dam. His sombre palette and a sense of emotional connection to the landscape, veil a deeper questioning upon the forces that shape nature and our place as people in the landscape—a theme that resonates with the landscape paintings of Russell Drysdale. Born in 1939, Pilven studied at the National Gallery Art School and the George Bell School (drawing). In the mid-1960s, Pilven left Australia for several years of European travel, study and painting, to England, Spain and Hydra Island, Greece. In 1972, he studied printmaking at Morley College, London, before returning to Australia in 1973, to settle in Melbourne. He was a finalist in the John McCaughey Invitation Art Prize, 1979, National Gallery of Victoria. Neville has held twenty solo exhibitions, many with leading Melbourne galleries. He has undertaken commissions for Myer, Telstra Australia and National Panasonic. His work is in collections including Artbank, Latrobe University, Ansett, Westpac, National Bank, Telstra Australia, Ridley, Potter Warburg and private collections in UK, USA, Australia and Japan. Art Money available on application.

MICHEL CANETTI EXHIBITION 2017

01:41
Soho Galleries presents MICHEL CANETTI Contemporary Paintings Exhibition April 8 to May 5 Visit www.sohogalleries.net Catalogue on request. Artist statement "Michel was born in Paris in 1955. After completing a Visual Arts Diploma at the Sorbonne, he then obtained a Masters Degree in Painting Renovation. He has been living in Melbourne since 1997. Michel's creativity deals with his insight into fashion and the appeal of the female charm. His work requires a delicate balance between creativity and control, mixing together flowing rounded curves and sharp sophisticated detail. His graceful women celebrate feminine beauty and style. While his nimble brush strokes capture and develop the tempting passion of the female figure. Having worked with some of the World's Largest Fashion Houses and Magazines, Michel is acclaimed as one of Frances leading fashion illustrators. Michel still stays true to the one thing that is his inspiration, the playful moments in high fashion glamour. Michel Canetti’s illustrations have smooth, flowing lines and curves that epitomise Parisian chic; stylish silhouettes that celebrate line and movement revelling in the female form. The work is polished and classic, yet modern and sassy. Similar to the traditional art of calligraphy, his work requires a delicate balance between creativity and control: flowing, rounded curves and sharp, sophisticated detail- Painting in Watercolour and gauche allows Canetti to execute the spontaneous disciplined lines to show the movement of the body and fabrics. The visual language of spontaneous shards of dynamic colors against the softest cloudlike subtle hues, is how I express my artistic voice. In an abstract form, I like to engage others into their own perceptions of what they see. We all assimilate our environment and life’s experiences very individually which I personally express on canvas with varying overlays of transparent and opaque paints, even though the subject and meaning of each work is apparent to me it is still through the eyes of the observer that the final conclusions are made.

ART by DANIEL ROMAINE

05:07
Contemporary Paintings by Daniel Romaine Visit Soho Galleries Sydney . www.sohogalleries.net Artwork details on application Daniel Romaine was born in Sydney. While the Assimilation Era led to estrangement from his cultural heritage, he reconnected with it later during his working life. Daniel studied art until leaving school in 1988 and while he had excelled at music and art he was raised in a strict family with an ethos of ‘get a real job and use your brain – art and music is not the way’. Daniel chose to study engineering and joined Qantas. Being taught painting techniques by his great uncle and father, he always painted in a fine dot style and the paintings were gifted to family, friends and charitable causes. Daniel always felt he had a responsibility to put something back into the lives and community of his people as his education had provided the opportunity for him to make his own choices in life. So in 1997 Daniel resigned from his position as an Avionics Engineer with Qantas and moved to Western Australia to begin working in Aboriginal Affairs. Daniel has spent time in the Pilbara, Western Australia. It was here that he found his ancestral realm while traversing this ancient land negotiating Native Title. He also worked professionally within the community on Palm Island, Queensland. Daniel lives and works in an artistic house he built using the natural resources found on the bush property on the Sunshine Coast. His painting talents have been discovered and this emerging urban artist has sold works quicker than he can paint them, with many of them going to discerning overseas buyers locally and throughout Australia as well as Hong Kong, USA, France, Germany, Switzerland and Japan. Most elements of his work are intrinsically related to landscape where flora and fauna and ancient landforms provide a rich source of inspiration. His paintings show intricate mapping of a myriad of places and events in abstract form. Daniel’s care and dedication to producing fine, detailed work allows him to create only a limited number of pieces each year and he tends to work in “bursts’ with long periods of reflection between. His main influence comes from the shapes, colours and textures of the landscapes. The unique contrasting areas he has seen on his travels appear in his paintings – ranging from the stark red desert in Western Australia to the rich ocean life surrounding Palm Island. His paintings have been entered in the Telstra NT Art Award and an entry into the Winnie and Archibald Prize is a personal goal. Daniel says: ‘Visions of landscapes appear to me in dots, sometimes they are familiar and other times they are unknown. It is as if my indigenous ancestors are creating the art through me. The visions of landscape are unpredictable and they stay with me – almost haunting me – until they are painted. My main influences come from the shapes, colours and textures of the landscapes. With every new painting I challenge myself to a more difficult use of technique to create an accurate representation of the landscape I see in my vision. I aspire to produce artworks that people look at and see the image as clearly as I do “Like a photo in the mind” and then feel the peaceful energy of the natural landscape that has been shaped by the elements over time. Due to the limited number of pieces I can produce in a year I am now offering prints of my work so that more people can share the images of my visions. I hope that my work gives people pleasure and a sense of peace in spirit as it gives me great peace in my heart to paint images of our untamed, uniquely contrasting but extremely beautiful country Australia’. Daniel believes art can bring peace and harmony to people’s lives it is this ethos that donates all print sale profit to indigenous charity. #danielromaine #sohogalleries #contemporarypainting #aboriginalart

Since first working with Aboriginal artists in 1981, Coo-ee Gallery has curated and organised more than 300 Indigenous art exhibitions in Australia and overseas involving individual Aboriginal artists and community groups. The gallery, specialises in both primary and secondary market Aboriginal art. This includes historically important bark paintings, artefacts, and early desert boards as well as high quality contemporary Aboriginal paintings, sculpture and limited edition fine art prints. OUTBACK TO ABSTRACT This spellbinding exhibition features beautiful paintings from a selection of outstanding and very collectable Australian Aboriginal artists. Australia is a continent and each region has its own style of indigenous painting drawn from rich cultural traditions. The selected Coo-ee artists, come from the glorious and unique Australian outback and their paintings are a reflection of their ancient rites, spiritual and physical environment. International award winning artist and elder, Walangari Karntawarra, was born into such a tradition and landscape. For the last 26 years he has lived in Sydney and travelled the world exhibiting his unique paintings. His work, specifically created for this exhibition, reflects his urban environment and the influences of contemporary life on his people’s Dreamtime Stories. Annette Lodge 53 Degrees South Exhibition

Annette Lodge Exhibition Soho Galleries. Preview November 14. In February 2015, I went on a voyage to the forgotten islands of the Sub – Antarctic to experience the power of nature, pure and uncut. Now free of invasive and introduced species, including humans, their wilderness is fiercely guarded by the animals, birds and flora that thrive there. The symbolism of crossing the unkempt Southern Ocean to get there is not lost on the traveller – It is like running a gauntlet and crossing a threshold, then disappearing down the rabbit hole. The beaches are patrolled by thousands of fur seals, penguins, petrels, shearwaters and black backed gulls. Clinging to the wind lashed ground are massive tussocks and Mega Herbs, succulent flowers that are so surreal and beautiful, it is like wading through a dreamscape. But it was the wandering albatross with their 4 metre wingspans that most mesmerized me. The mythical bird that haunts the poet and seduces the sailor. It is a knowing bird, innately connected to the wind, the currents, the ocean and the weather that dictates its world. On the Campbell Islands, I watched them soar into the valleys to find their nesting mate, communicating, playing together, surfing the wind. I sat beside the stillness of the giant lone nesters, whose calm resembled a Buddha where the only movement was their snow white feathers blowing in the wind and their deep blinking eyes. It was a rare glimpse into a parallel world, a great and unforgettable privilege. This exhibition is my homage to the soul of the albatross. - Annette Lodge, 2015. Marshall Williams "Subsumed" Exhibition Contemporary Paintings Soho Galleries Visit www.sohogalleries.net Exhibit Catalogue on application Marshall Williams in his latest series of large paintings continues his fascination with the still and glass like surfaces that envelope the hulls floating quietly within their watery surrounds. The boats and the reflected imagery play across the surface in a symmetrical and frontal expanse. Subsumed in soft colour and glowing with luminous light, the works exhibit a mood of silent calm. Drifting and stationary, often as single hull or paired in close relationship to each other with a floating expanse of clouds above. Soft landscapes which echo the curve of the land now also make an appearance in this show. The mood and colour as much the subject of the works as the illusions of the image.
