How to get an even coat of paint with spray cans

08:06
Hey guys! I’m Brad, and I make how-to videos. I do custom painting projects, guitar painting, airbrushing, spray can painting, wood working, and a variety of other finishing work and tutorials. Please subscribe and check out my channel for more! This video is meant to help those who are doing paint jobs with spray cans rather than paint guns. It is always best to use paint guns when trying to get an even coat of paint, particularly on a large surface. I hope this video will be useful to those who don't have access to such equipment. This should hopefully answer some of the questions that arose pertaining to my video about painting guitars with spray cans as well. The paints that I used in this video were both enamels and are made by rustoleum. The black is a semi-gloss. I recommend using matte black if you are intending to paint over it, particularly if you plan on waiting more than an hour or so. This will allow for better mechanical adhesion, although the paint should adhere chemically if you are using solvent based material. How to paint a fade with spray cans

05:19
Hey guys! I’m Brad, and I make how-to videos. I do custom painting projects, guitar painting, airbrushing, spray can painting, wood working, and a variety of other finishing work and tutorials. Please subscribe and check out my channel for more! In this video I demonstrate the process for painting a fade from one colour to the next with spray cans. I use four different colours for this tutorial to create a fade from blue to yellow. The trick to this technique is understanding how the angle of the spray can effects how it sprays. A little bit of practice will go a long way to helping you understand and master this custom painting technique. As always, if you're doing a custom paint job on something important you should know that spray cans are really not the best option. In almost every circumstance, spray guns and airbrushes allow you to achieve a better result. This kind of paint job is no different. A much better fade can be achieved with the proper equipment, as well as with the use of more transparent paints. Intro music by Youtubers Sovereign King and Owen McKinley. What is Candy Paint?

05:47
Hey guys! I’m Brad, and I make how-to videos. I do custom painting projects, guitar painting, airbrushing, spray can painting, wood working, and a variety of other finishing work and tutorials. Please subscribe and check out my channel for more! There is a lot of confusion out there about what candy paint actually is. The term is often used incorrectly, and many people don't truly goes into a candy finish. The candy paint job is a very specialized thing, and it is important to know what it entails when you're dealing with custom paint work. Candy paint is made with transparent dye as opposed to the pigments used in other types of paint. This means that light will pass through it, hit whatever is underneath, and then pass through it again before reaching the viewer's eye. In contrast, normal paint is given its appearance by light hitting the pigment and reflecting off of it. This transparency means that one can achieve incredibly deep looking finishes with candy paints, but it also means that it's important to be selective about what you use under a candy. Putting it over black for example would be wasteful. The finished product would simply be black. Candies are often used over silver and heavily pearled paints so that the pearlescence can reflect through the dye. Candy paints are also what is used for most true-fire techniques. How to paint ghost flames with spray cans

07:56
Hey guys! I’m Brad, and I make how-to videos. I do custom painting projects, guitar painting, airbrushing, spray can painting, wood working, and a variety of other finishing work and tutorials. Please subscribe and check out my channel for more! IMPORTANT: Since the filming of this video, candy paint has become available in spray can format. This video shows a new technique that I came up with for painting a form of ghost flame with spray cans. Obviously you can achieve superior results using proper spray equipment, but this is still a fun an interesting technique to try out. Hopefully this technique will open up some possibilities for ghosting effects for anyone who is restricted to doing their spraying with cans. The paints that I use in this video are made by Rustoleum. Other brands such as Krylon, Tremclad, Molotow, or others can be used as long as you can find a translucent colour that meets your needs. Candy paints, which are completely transparent, are now available. House of Kolor carries a high quality version. They refer to them as Kandy. You will be able to achieve superior results as demonstrated on the reverse of the panel if you become proficient with an airbrush and paint gun. The back of the panel was painted using AutoAir and PPG paints, as well as a Devilbiss paint gun and Iwata airbrush. The process for achieving this kind of effect with spray cans involved creating a high contrast image using a dark background and light foreground, or the opposite. Next you paint over it with a semi-transparent colour such as the rustoleum metallic paint that I used in this video. I chose the racing green colour, and used it as the background as well. The guitar kit build from guitar fetish part 5 | Grain filling

08:39
Hey guys! I’m Brad, and I make how-to videos. I do custom painting projects, guitar painting, airbrushing, spray can painting, wood working, and a variety of other finishing work and tutorials. Please subscribe and check out my channel for more! In this video I show one method for grain filling the mahogany on the back, sides, and neck of the guitar. This technique allows you to fill in the open grain so that it won't absorb paint. This in turn makes it much easier to get a smooth finish. Please keep in mind that you need the open grain on the maple veneer to absorb stain or dye, so don't grain fill that part of the guitar. This guitar kit was very inexpensive, and unfortunately it has some significant problems. The flamed maple veneer on the top is paper thin and has been sanded through in a couple spots. The cavity plates don't fit correctly, and there are several other issues as well. We will try to cover how to fix as many of these problems as possible over the course of this series, and hopefully end up with a decent finished product. Spraying Sanding Sealer

Hey guys! I’m Brad, and I make how-to videos. I do custom painting projects, guitar painting, airbrushing, spray can painting, wood working, and a variety of other finishing work and tutorials. Please subscribe and check out my channel for more! In this video I use Behlen's Qualalacq sanding sealer to seal up the top and sides of this guitar. I only sprayed on one coat of the sanding sealer in this video, and I think the surface of the guitar already looks great. The sealer comes out of the quart ready to spray, and is very easy to use. Bear in mind though that it is lacquer, so it is dangerous to spray it without a mask and gloves. Please check out Behlen's website and have a look at this product. Cool Spray Can Trick: How to create your own metallic spray paint colour

Please subscribe and check out my channel for more! Hey guys. In this video I show you one of my favourite spray can tricks of all time. How to create you own metallics and pearls. This video also shows how to break one of the rules of proper adhesion. Watch and learn my friends! As always, if you're doing a custom paint job on something important you should know that spray cans are really not the best option. In almost every circumstance, spray guns and airbrushes allow you to achieve a better result. This kind of paint job is no different. Mixing your own colours gives you more options and can allow for more effects than trying to do this with spray cans. Intro music by Youtubers Sovereign King and Owen McKinley. The Guitar Kit Build From Guitar Fetish Part 19 | Polishing the Lacquer Clear Coat

Please subscribe and check out my channel for more! In this video we go through the polishing process on this guitar. We begin with the sanding to get the finish nice and flat. Then we move up to higher grits to get it a smooth as possible. This makes the polishing process much easier. Finally, we apply the polish carefully and burn it into the sanded finish to get that beautiful mirror shine. This guitar kit was very inexpensive, and unfortunately it has some significant problems. The flamed maple veneer on the top is paper thin and has been sanded through in a couple spots. The cavity plates don't fit correctly, and there are several other issues as well. How to paint your guitar by hand: Staining

14:23
Hey guys! I’m Brad, and I make how-to videos. I do custom painting projects, guitar painting, airbrushing, spray can painting, wood working, and a variety of other finishing work and tutorials. Please subscribe and check out my channel for more! The time has come! The votes are in, and the result is a tutorial on how to paint your guitar without having to spray anything. No paint guns, no compressors, and no spray cans. This paint job will be done entirely by hand. I realize that this option was popular because it doesn't require any specialized equipment, so in keeping with the theme of using accesible stuff, this paint job will be done entirely using products that can be found at your local home depot or similar hardware stores. The shopping list for this particular job is pretty small. I used a standard sandpaper to prepare the wood for stain, and an old cut up t-shirt as well as some 0000 steel wool to apply it. You can also use a foam brush or paint brush to apply the stain, but you will want to use a rag to while off the excess. The stains that I used for the front of the guitar are made by MinWax. They are: 230 Earl American, and 231 Gunstock. I don't use the two in one stains that are intended to provide a final finish. I don't believe that they are as high a quality as the finish you can get by doing these jobs in two steps. On the back and sides of the guitar I used a black cherry stain made by Varathane. Like the top, this was applied using steel wool, and the excess was removed with a section of t-shirt. I did something along the lines of a sunburst effect on the top. Since the stains that I used to create this burst effect were only one number apart in tone, the effect is much more subtle than that which you would find on something like a cherry burst gibson, or a tobacco burst fender. You can achieve a more pronounced burst effect simply by using stains that contrast more significantly. The guitar body that I used for this video is a bare piece of alder cut in the telecaster shape. Don't forget to ask your questions or submit video questions if you want to show me something.
