The Three Reasons Why Americans AREN'T Rising Up in Open Revolt (Robert Reich)

03:22
With income inequality rising, the middle class increasingly squeezed and more of us than ever feeling the pinch, why hasn't the American public risen up to demand reform? It's happened before, as in the Progressive Era, during the New Deal and the Great Society, so why not now? In his latest "Regulators" vlog, University of California Economics professor and former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich explains the three reasons keeping Americans from rising up in open rebellion to demand change. The Myth of Americans Living Beyond Their Means with Robert Reich

03:58
There is a belief that Americans got into economic turmoil because of living beyond their means. Robert Reich (Professor of Public Policy at UC Berkeley, and former Labor Secretary) explains why this a myth, that most Americans do not live beyond their means and that their "means" have not kept up with the economy. Where has the wealth accumulated and why aren't the top of the top being surtaxed while average-earning and the poor shoulder the burden? https://twitter.com/RBReich http://robertreich.org/ Support The Point for FREE by doing your Amazon shopping through this link (bookmark it!) http://www.amazon.com/?tag=townsquaretyt-20
Post Election: Conservative Media Hot Air (TJDS)

Tom Brokaw made an all-covering, vague election prediction and still somehow got it wrong. Rush Limbaugh made a "landslide" prediction, then went back and said he didn't (ask his brother). Bring Back the Basic Bargain with Robert Reich

06:26
Throughout much of the 20th century, the American political and economic system thrived based on a fundamental bargain - that US employers would pay their workers enough to purchase the goods and services US companies produced. Meanwhile government's role was to maintain this bargain, allowing wages and living standards to rise across the board. Today, however, that bargain has been all but destroyed, and as Robert Reich (Professor of Public Policy at UC Berkeley, and former Labor Secretary) explains, the petty squabbling soon to return to Washington when Congress reconvenes will prove useless at improving the economy until this compact between workers, employers and government is restored. The Hoax of Entitlement Reform with Robert Reich

05:01
Conservatives are touting entitlement reform as a solution to looming deficits. But, as the title of this video suggests, this is not the route to take. Entitlement reform is a distraction. Changing social security and medicare doesn't affect the deficit, and changing the rules to raise the age for recipients only shifts the burden to the next generation of laborers. So what is the solution? What is the major drain on our budget that truly does need reform, and how can that be done? Ending the Global "Race to the Bottom"

05:32
Even as the Apple Corporation is being roundly criticized for using its Irish affiliates - some of which have no actual employees - to avoid paying billions in US taxes, American elected officials continue to call for LOWER corporate taxes to make the United States more "competitive." The cause of this seeming disconnect: a worldwide "race to the bottom" in which nations compete to attract capital investment, typically by cutting corporate tax rates, dismantling regulations and driving down wages. As a result, the power of transnational corporations continues to grow while individual nations lose their capacity to control their own markets. There is a solution, however. In this video Robert Reich (Professor of Public Policy at UC Berkeley, and former Labor Secretary) explains how large economic entities, such as the United States and the European Union, can leverage one important bargaining chip - access to their consumer markets - to curb the power of corporations and serve their citizens, rather than the profit-at-all-costs interests of global capital. https://twitter.com/RBReich http://robertreich.org/ Support The Point for FREE by doing your Amazon shopping through this link (bookmark it!) http://www.amazon.com/?tag=townsquaretyt-20

Republicans vs. Democrats: Why So Angry? with Robert Reich

03:42
Americans are more bitterly divided along political lines today than they have been in nearly a century. While the advent of social media and the shout-fests of opinionated radio and cable TV have played a role, the greatest factor driving today's political polarization is income inequality. So says UC Berkeley Professor of Public Policy and former Labor Secretary Robert Reich, who argues that the erosion of the middle class - and the social contract that kept those in the middle from falling too far below - has led to a search for scapegoats, feeding the demagogues, the trolls and the sowers of division. Breaking up the Banks with Robert Reich

03:02
Too big to fail? We all know that term was a misnomer when applied to big banks. Robert Reich explains why it's so important to break up the biggest banks, which have grown exponentially over the past few years. This idea of breaking up the banks isn't new, and is supported by Federal Reserve Governor Dan Tarullo, Former Citigroup CEO Sanford Weil, Rep. Jeb Hensarling, Senator Sherrod Brown, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Michele Bachmann: Good Bye and Good Riddance

Today, on the heels of her failed 2012 presidential campaign, and under a cloud of suspicion for campaign finance irregularities, Bachmann is retiring from Congress. The Economic Elephant with Robert Reich

05:29
What's really wrong with the economy, and why? Unemployment is still high and job creation hasn't made a big dent this many years into the so-called recovery. Who has the best plan? Is it the Keynesians? On the other end, the Austerics? The answer is neither, really. They both neglect the economic elephant in the room - spreading wealth to the wealthy keeps buying power away from the middle class; it simply does not lead to economic recovery, historically. Perhaps looking to history can help us learn what works and what doesn't. Robert Reich (Professor of Public Policy at UC Berkeley, and former Labor Secretary) delivers a compelling argument for a 6-point plan for economic recovery. https://twitter.com/RBReich http://robertreich.org/ Support The Point for FREE by doing your Amazon shopping through this link (bookmark it!) http://www.amazon.com/?tag=townsquaretyt-20

Yet Democrats and many on the left screamed bloody murder when the Bush Administration committed similar assaults on civil liberties. WhatsApp With Stagnant Job Growth?

02:31
Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich explains why the remarkable success of a company like WhatsApp, which was recently purchased by Facebook for $19 billion, is symptomatic of the larger problem of income inequality that has plagued the US economy for a generation. In the new economy there's no connection between the size of a company's customer base and the number of employees required to service them, he explains. Which is why just 55 employees could handle WhatsApp's more than 450 million customers. Meanwhile, across the board, as productivity and profits continue to grow, workers and wages are increasingly being squeezed onto the margins. How will we solve this challenge of spreading the gains of the information economy more broadly - this may be the most difficult economic question the nation will face in the coming decades. Rocky Anderson on the US's Imperialist History - Undermining Democracy In Guatemala, Iran and Beyond

06:21
Former Salt Lake City mayor and Justice Party presidential candidate Rocky Anderson provides a devastating history lesson, describing a few of the brutal post-World War II examples of US imperialism. In 1953 the CIA staged a coup to overthrow Mohammad Mosaddegh, the popular and democratically-elected Iranian prime minister, to keep him from nationalizing Iranian oil. Then in 1954, at the behest of the United Fruit Company (now Chiquita), the CIA overthrew popular Guatemalan president Jacobo Arbenz, leading to decades of brutality, human rights abuses and the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Guatemalans. More recently, US imperialism has focused its attention on the Middle East, with the prolonged war in Afghanistan, the illegal war in Iraq and frequent drone strikes in four sovereign nations as just a few of the most prominent examples. All this from a nation that purports to support democracy and self-determination around the world. Comedy Central's Jon Stewart has bristled at suggestions that his criticism of the Affordable Care Act rollout is indicative of something ominous for the Obama Administration. In the past, Stewart has argued that he's "just a comedian," and as such should not be considered a major influencer over the public discourse. Others, like Howard Kurtz, balk at the notion and feel that it means something when a liberal like Jon Stewart directs his barbs at Democrats rather than Republicans. Who's right? Why the GOP Will Never Learn with Robert Reich

05:01
It seems like the disaster of the 2012 elections should have taught Republicans that it's time to reform their strategy. What they were doing before, especially on social issues has been proven to clash with what Americans believe, and are on the wrong side of history. So, will Republicans take the lesson from their failure, reform, and change their strategy to keep themselves a viable party? No, of course not. Why? Who is the Republican party's base and why are they seemingly more valuable to the party than the nation's other ever-growing demographics? It is possible to reform a political party. The Democratic Party of the 1990s simply ignored its old base and became New Democrats, spearheading a North American Free Trade Act (to the chagrin of organized labor), performance standards in classrooms (resisted by teachers' unions) and welfare reform and crime control (upsetting traditional liberals). But why won't Republicans change with the times? Robert Reich (Professor of Public Policy at UC Berkeley, and former Labor Secretary) explains why the GOP must change and why they ultimately won't.
