***Before I start, I want to make it known that I am not against IR relationships, I do think two ppl of a different race can fall in love and be happy. I am specifically not talking about people of a different race that are in healthy, loving, respectful relationships. I am specifically talking about degrading and hurtful relationships between BM/WW that carry echoes of slavery. If this is not you, please do not be offended. If this you, well, hit dogs holler.***
Hi Guys! Happy Monday.
Last week, mainstream media headlines blared with headlines highlighting a 'rap beef' between rapper Snoop Dogg and Ugly Azalea. The media almost took on the tone of a lynch mob, claiming Snoop 'viciously attacked' Ugly, and her manager, T.I., eventually stepped in to insist on an apology.
This incident falls in context with the thinking of the past 400 years (since slavery) that indicates that Black men and white women have a peculiar and symbiotic relationship, wherein each gets something:
1. white women treat Black men as an animalistic protector, like a pet dog that protects them and also offers them a walk on the 'wild side' sexually. Throughout history, Black men have been seen as 'mandingos,' and known for sexual prowess, hypersexuality, and hypermasculinity. white women also often cite 'protection' as a main reason for their attraction, but what about this Black man makes you feel protected that you don't get from your own kind? Does he remind you of an animal? A dog? A bear?
2. Black men, in turn, treat white women as something pure, fragile, innocent, and worthy of protection. Colorism also plays a part in this, as lighter and white skin are often equated to hyperfemininity, innocence, and superiority. Black men that suffer from a colonized mind also wish to have what their colonizer has: they wish to eat his food, sit at his table, sleep in his bed, fuck his daughter. white women are the ultimate status symbol. Why does this white woman make you want to protect her and not your own kind? Does she seem innocent? Pure? Fragile? Madonna-like? This all falls under the 'white gaze' that paints eurocentric beauty as an ultimate as opposed to black women who are painted as 'strong,' 'independent,' and 'masculine.'
Note: Black women, in contrast, are not seen as pure or innocent, but self sufficient, strong, and independent. This is a holdover from slavery (where Black women were worked just as hard a Black men) and also the habit of matriarchy in the black community, where Black women are seen as strong creatures that can do it all and 'don't need no man.' The white gaze also has a habit of masculinizing dark skin so BW are seen as more masculine, and not feminine/fragile or worthy of protecting, especially dark skinned Black women.
Thanks for watching.
