CHALLENGE: Fill a roll of Concept art sketches | Day 1: 5.60meter

20:58
DOWNLOAD THE DESIGNER STARTER KIT: http://bit.ly/thedesignerstarterkityt CHALLENGE: Fill a roll of Concept art sketches Day 1: I sketched 5m60 of sketches. It took me about 3hours +. See more at: http://thedesignsketchbook.com/tip-93-7days-roll-of-fax-paper-challenge-to-accelrate-my-sketching-skills/ ---- Music from Boogie Belgique. Forever & Ever https://boogiebelgique.bandcamp.com/album/nightwalker-vol-i ---- 7-DAYS ROLL OF PAPER CHALLENGE I started without knowing the lenght of the roll. But I needed to set up a time limit to the challenge. I took 7 days, fair enough. The challenge is not about making each sketch a piece of art, but a design journey to study and explore “new sketching territories”. What really matter here are: How am I able to multiply ideas How my sketching skills will improve Know better my self WHICH THEME ? I decided to focus on 1 theme to get more results. I decided to explore bots, mecs, spaceship from Concept art. MATERIAL NEEDED WHICH PAPER? A roll of paper for fax, width 210mm. The length is up to you, different lenght are available. You can find some Fax paper roll on Amazon. WHICH PEN? a Ballpoint pen: Thin lines and great pen pressure – great for drawing details a Sharpie Ultra fine point: Deep black pen, slide great on paper – great for loose sketching. a Pilot Twin marker and a Papermate Flair: Thicker than Sharpie – great for focusing on simple shapes (you can’t draw much small details with it). To me, the Papermate Flair is better than the Medium tip of the Twin Marker. Know more about the pen I used here. THE DIFFICULTIES I MET DURING THE CHALLENGE KEEP CONSISTENT At start I was super motivated. I draw more than 5m the first day. The day after, I did half of it. Then Wednesday and Thursday I took a break. Plus, I was busy with other things (Making the first sketching video tutorial included). TIP: I personally like to take some break. I spend some time at studying pictures from Concept artist works such as John Park, Feng Zhu, Scott Robertson and many others. Keep in mind that looking for reference is part of the sketching process. KEEP INSPIRED If a Blank paper scare you, relax. There is couple solution to start being Zen. Use reference pictures 1- Don’t be ashamed to look at reference pictures. Sometime, I like to look at concept artist for 5 minutes or more before starting a drawing session. My brain calibrate itself viewing things better volume with outlines. Plus I try to absorb that Concept art mood. I like to look at great artist such as John Park, Feng Zhu, Scott Robertson, Daniel Simon… TIP: I draw a lot following my feelings. If I draw a vilain, I try to imagine myself being a mad men. My lines get naturally more edgy. If I draw a Despicable Me Minion, I imagine having one beside me as a friend ! It’s fun and my line get smoother and rounded. 2- I open Google image on Ipad. Anytime I get some pictures from any kind of machine, spaceship, motors and so on. If you have books, it’s even better. TIP: Try to type your keywords in multiple language to get wider your results. I type my keywords in English and French. Give yourself a story If you don’t have any ideas, then provoke them. Start with what you like. What was the recent movie you watched ? Use the “What if” technique. Or draw something you already know, and try to improve it or adding in new elements. Start with many small sketches When we are beginner, we like to start 1 sketch and stick to it for hours. However we skipped an essential step: the phase of research. This is when we create and multiply ideas drawing many sketches. Each of them may take 10 sec to few minutes only. KEEP FOCUSED: ELIMINATE THE DISTRACTION This is maybe the biggest enemy we have nowadays. The distraction is virtual. It come from your phone, Facebook, email, Instagram, Youtube. To be able to finish the roll on time, I need more discipline as usual. It’s good to shut down the phone and computer (not in sleeping mode but shut down). I only allow Google image on my Ipad or Instagram artist for reference. TIP: Go out for drawing. I like to go to some cafe and draw. It may be more noisy, but my brain can focus more on the task. There is a cafe nearby I like. It happenned I stayed there from morning to evening. I had lunch, cafe, dinner keeping studying new stuff and drawing all day. Time flies. TIP: Music ! Put your earphone and get ready to sketch for hours. Do not shuffle your music among different artist or style of music at every song. Don’t listen to music from Youtube playlist. The advertising will interrupt your concentration. You could make some playlist with Soundcloud. How to start from scratch. 1- Start drawing spaceship with an abstract shape, yet symmetrical. 2- Add Spaceship details ! This exercice is not that easy, but it’s definitely very fun ! ------

How To Draw An Impossible Star Step By Step - 3D Star - Impossible Shapes

First, put a dot in the middle of your paper. This will represent the very center of your impossible star. Next, draw a perfectly vertical line going up from this dot. The length of this line will represent the length of the branches of your star. Ok, so we got one of the five branches. Now it’s time to draw in the other ones. To do this, imagine that there is a circle around the center dot and you want to divide this circle into 5 equal pieces. And you can use that first vertical line as your starting point. You’ll want to make the angle between each lines 72 degrees. Now just connect the ends of these lines in this pattern to form a star. And voilà! We have a perfect start. Ok, hard part’s over. Now we can turn this regular star into an impossible star. Step 2 – Turning “Regular Star” Into Impossible Star! Now, go to the tip of one of the star branch and measure a small distance down. Then draw a horizontal line across this point. Then repeat this process for the other 4 star branches. Next just erase the tip of each of the branches. So before we go any further, let’s ink in the lines that we want to keep to avoid confusion. I’ll use a 1.0 copic multiliner pen to in the outline of our drawing. And let’s just erase some these guidelines so it doesn’t get too messy. I’ll keep these guidelines that form a pentagon as they’ll come in handy later on. Now just connect the corners of our star-like shape in the following way. Notice that we now have 2 pentagon shapes at the center of our drawing. A large pentagon here. And a medium pentagon here. Now let’s draw a third pentagon inside the medium one. The best way to do this is to draw the sides of the medium pentagon again, expect move them inward so that they form a smaller pentagon. Now let’s ink in this small pentagon. To ink in the rest of the drawing, just imagine that you are trying to get from the small pentagon to the large pentagon. Here’s what I mean… Let’s start with this side of the small pentagon. To get to the large pentagon, you can either go left or right. For the first one, it doesn’t matter which one you pick, so let’s just go right. Draw a line from the small pentagon to the large pentagon. Once you reaches one of the sides of the large pentagon, make a turn and go along that side until it ends. Ok, let’s move on to the next one. Once again to get to the large pentagon, you can go left or right. But since the left side is blocked, we’ll have to go right. And once you reach the large pentagon, make a turn and run along it’s side. And just repeat this process for the remaining 3 sides of the small pentagon. The last step is to connect this line with the tip of the star. And let’s do that for the other 4 lines as well. Now just erase the pencil line and we have an impossible star. Step 3 – Shading Your Impossible Star Now let’s add some shading to give this drawing some dimension. Let’s work on this branch first. I’ll start by using an HB pencil to put down a base tone in this area. Then I’ll put dark gradations at these 3 areas to emphasize the fact that the branches of the star are overlapping. Now, let’s move to this section and put a gradation at this end and this end with a highlight area in between. Next, let’s use a 2B pencil to go re-enforce the darker areas. And now, we’ll just repeat this process for the other 4 branches. Lastly, I’ll take a 4B pencil and add some hard shadows to the areas where the star branches are overlapping. This little bit of detail will really make the drawing look much more 3 dimensional. And now, let’s just put our signature on it and call it a drawing! The "Art" of Communication | Jimmy Nelson | TEDxInstitutLeRosey

25:31
Recording and communicating with tribes and peoples to produce remarkable photographs of cultures before they pass away. In 1987, after 10 years at a Jesuit boarding school in the North of England, Jimmy Nelson set off on his own to traverse the length of Tibet on foot. The journey lasted a year and upon his return his unique visual diary, featuring revealing images of a previously inaccessible Tibet, was published to wide international acclaim. In early 1994 he and his Dutch wife Ashkaine produced Literary Portraits of China, a 40 month project that took them to all the hidden corners of the newly opening People’s Republic. From 1997 onwards, Jimmy started accumulating images of remote and unique cultures photographed with a traditional 50-year-old plate camera and awards followed. International exhibitions and acclaim created the Before they Pass Away in 2010. Jimmy Nelson spoke at TEDx Amsterdam in 2013 and at TED Global in 2014. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Paul Klee Art Documentary. Episode 13 Artists of the 20th Century

52:14
Artists of the 20th Century Art Documentary Series. Episode 13 Paul Klee Paul Klee was a Swiss-German painter. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included Expressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism. Klee was a natural draftsman who experimented with and eventually deeply explored color theory, writing about it extensively; his lectures Writings on Form and Design Theory (Schriften zur Form und Gestaltungslehre), published in English as the Paul Klee Notebooks, are held to be as important for modern art as Leonardo da Vinci's A Treatise on Painting for the Renaissance. He and his colleague, Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky, both taught at the Bauhaus school of art, design and architecture. His works reflect his dry humor and his sometimes childlike perspective, his personal moods and beliefs, and his musicality. http://www.tate.org.uk/art/artists/paul-klee-1417 http://www.standard.co.uk/goingout/exhibitions/paul-klee-making-visible-tate-modern-exhibition-review-8900715.html https://www.questia.com/newspaper/1G1-81897307/walking-the-line-from http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/moslive/article-1259247/BRIAN-SEWELL-Ten-greatest-painters-changed-world-art.html Brian Sewell Big Art Challenge UK Art Prize Full Series: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azZUF4eVaIk&list=PLTRal7R3G0f-SI4XoSByxArBodGDHHupR&index=6 Understanding Contemporary Art Full Course: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYQIK-gbo8w&list=PLTRal7R3G0f8E9rOf82XbZiBhL6IxzDCJ&index=1 Art After Metaphysics: http://www.amazon.com/After-Metaphysics-John-David-Ebert/dp/1492765481/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1450485945&sr=8-1&keywords=art+after+metaphysics Naked Emperors: Criticisms of English Contemporary Art: http://www.amazon.com/Naked-Emperors-Criticisms-English-Contemporary-ebook/dp/B00JOS49TC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1451990337&sr=8-3&keywords=naked+emperors

‘Out and About with Paul – Brush Line & Wash in Watercolours with Paul Taggart’

02:23
Although this box-set of Line & Wash demonstrations shows Artist & Author Paul Taggart using watercolours; the Brush Line & Wash technique and method can be exploited and adapted for use with acrylics, inks and pastels - available on artworkshopwithpaul via vimeo - https://vimeo.com/ondemand/outandaboutwithpaulwc2 Welcome to ‘Out and About with Paul’ where you join Artist & Author Paul Taggart at his easel painting on-the-spot during various events. “Working with Line & Wash need not be about precise linework, nor need it be about detailed linework. In this box-set Paul shows how it can be about working in a manner that allows you to be dynamic, free-flowing and suggestive. Of course there is a place for precise and detailed linework – Paul is not saying there isn’t; for as with everything in creating artworks, it is a matter of individual style and approach. However, in this box-set, Paul sets out to demonstrate a variety of approaches across a number of different subjects; using various tools for his linework as introduced in the Painting Equipment Focus video. In the four ‘Out and About with Paul’ tutorials, you are guided from the simplest of studies, executed with the lightest of touches, in which sunlight and reflections are the essence of the scene. Then on to another, where changing light conditions affect two views, captured at different times of the day – two structural studies, one a boat, the other a building. Thirdly, a two-part subject, in which a troupe of eight dancers performing for a brief fifteen minutes in an event, form a tableau of moving figures within a montage painting. Not only an object lesson in how to capture multiple full-figure portraits; but also an invaluable lesson in ‘painting’ white. Finally, a strong and bold subject, requiring a strong and bold approach completes this set; a set in which Paul works with different brushes and coloured inks for the linework and exploits several watercolour techniques for the ‘washes’ of colour. Filmed in real-time, with close up shots so that you can see Paul’s brush-strokes, colour mixes and more, you not only get to peek over Paul’s shoulder as he works; you will also pick up a host of hints and tips from his detailed running commentary. Value-for-money is our philosophy and this box-set is available to rent or buy at a fraction of the cost that you would pay for a similar overall length DVD. Best wishes for your painting, from Eileen and Paul Each of the four completed montage paintings completed from these events was donated by Paul Taggart and Eileen Tunnell to RNLI Scotland for fund-raising purposes, as part of their on-going fund-raising project …… ‘AWASH WITH THE RNLI’ – by Paul Taggart These on-the-spot paintings are elements in Paul Taggart and Eileen Tunnell’s wide-ranging Fund-Raising Project in aid of RNLI Scotland – http://www.rnli.org.uk The open-ended project is centred on a series of Master Oil Paintings by Paul Taggart, to be produced over many years - each painting will be published by Paul Taggart as a Fund-Raising Limited Edition Print. SUCH AS THIS ‘Masterworks in Oils with Paul Taggart [Series 1’ – Reflecting on Longhope Sound - http://vimeo.com/ondemand/artworkshop... The subject for each of these paintings being chosen for its history and iconic representation of an area closely associated with selected RNLI Lifeboat Stations around the shores of Scotland. THANKYOU Paul Taggart and Eileen Tunnell would like to thank Longhope Lifeboat Station, Oban Lifeboat Station and Invergordon Lifeboat Station for their support of this fund-raising project.

Bass lesson - 16th notes - muting - Jaco style hammer ons

12:00
www.cambridgebasslessons.co.uk Here is a great way to practice your 16th note technique. Constantly play with your right hand and let the left hand choose the notes. Muting the notes gives a bass line a percussive feel that adds life and flavour to the part. This is a technique that was frequently used by the late great (greatest imo) Jaco Pastorius.

How to use Gimp like an Artist (How to draw in Gimp)

21:54
How to use Gimp - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoP5LOFxPeY&list=UUlm7crl7splsP-DmxEyvkgg Sketch Method - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OhrjopCjmA Blob Method - http://www.deviantart.com/art/Complete-Digital-Painting-and-GIMP-Tutorial-339824344 FreeGimp's Method - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxCDOUqc5-c open up gimp and create a new file. make the file size at least 1000 by 1000. I’m making it 1080 by 1920 pixels. Also we need to go into advanced options. And change the X resolution and the Y resolution. Change it to about 300. Fill the image with white. The sketch method. make sure your tablet is connected to your computer. Then click the gimp tab and click Input devices. Click the icon that looks like a paintbrush. Mine says ‘Quartz Pen’. Go to mode: and change where it says ‘disabled’ and make it say ‘screen’ then click save. Now you can use your tablet with gimp. To test this out double click the paintbrush tool. Then where it says ‘dynamics’ change the dynamic to Pressure Opacity. Then draw lightly around your screen. Then try and apply pressure to your pen when drawing. If it got darker when you applied pressure then your tablet was successfully paired to Gimp. The paintbrush tool simply acts as a paintbrush by drawing wherever you draw. The paintbrush tool uses your foreground color as your ink. With the paintbrush tool we can change the brush shape by clicking this and choosing a few brushes. We can also change the size of the brush here. We will not change the Aspect Ratio and the Angle those must stay at 0. We can also apply dynamics. Basically these change how the brush works or draws depending on which one you select. For our purposes we will change the brush size between 3.0 and 5.0, We will be using 3 brushes. Those brushes are: Hardness 050, Hardness 100, and Pencil Scratch. You can use these brushes interchangeably, which one you use regularly is simply personal preference. We will also change the dynamics. Click on the dynamics button, then click on the bottom right hand corner and click this dynamics button. Now over here we will create a new custom dynamic. To do that click this paper icon. Name this. Pressure Opacity & Size. Then click these two boxes where it says Pressure Opacity and Pressure Size. Then close these two tabs. Now go back to dynamics and click Pressure Opacity & Size. Now it’s very comfortable to sketch pictures like this. I’m going to sketch a line-art. If you mess up you can simply use the eraser tool or click the undo button a few times. Now that our sketch has its basic shape we want to finalize it. To do that click this icon here and make a new layer. Make the layer transparent and click okay. Go and double click the ink tool. Make sure the opacity is 100, then click smooth stroke. Leave the quality at 20 and the weight at 50. Then go over to size and make it between 1.0 and 2.0. I’m making it 1.0. Then rename the transparent layer you just made by right clicking it and clicking edit layer attributes. Rename it to Lineart. Now trace over your sketch. For all the curvy parts use one smooth continuous stroke. Take your time. For all of the hard edges such as this. Make individual strokes that meet up on angles like so. If you can’t see your ink because the sketch is too dark below. Then simply change the color of the sketch, by using the fill tool and filling your sketched lines with a light-blue or red. Once you’re done. Make another layer by clicking here, except this time make it a white layer. Then drag that layer under the lineart layer. Now I know the lineart looks a little dumb; but now we’re going to make it a lot better. To do that rename the white layer to Coloring and shading. Then select the paintbrush tool. Make the size roughly 20, turn the dynamics off, and select the Hardness 050 brush. Then select your base colors. Mine will be red and blue, and start coloring in your picture. Don’t worry about shading or being accurate yet. Once you’ve added your base colors. You can start shading. To shade simply determine where the light is coming from. For us we’ll make it from the left. Then double click the doge and burn tool. Keep the brush at hardness 050, and the size at 20. Make sure dynamics are off. Keep the opacity at 100, and make the exposure 100 as well. Then Select dodge. Dodge makes the colors you go over brighter. To make certain colors brighter using dodge click shadows or highlights. Shadows make darker colors like blue brighter. Highlights make lighter colors like red brighter. (you should only use highlights for shiny objects like metals or liquids for realistic affect) Since we covered our image with base tones there’s no need to select the mid-tone option. Now we’ll select the burn option. The burn option makes whatever area we want; darker or in other words gives it shadow. We’ll toggle between highlights and shadows while using the burn tool.

A rescue and rehab center for birds of prey, RAPTOR, Inc. introduced the video team to a Great Horned Owl, Turkey Vulture and Peregrine Falcon, each with new shapes, features and personalities to explore and portray with pencil, pen & ink, and watercolor. In this interview, Marc Taro Holmes speaks with volunteer, Robert Smith, about the RAPTOR, Inc. dedication to rehabilitation of injured or orphaned raptors, and education of the community. Visit http://RaptorInc.org to learn more about this unique organization, and how you can play a part! And visit http://ArtistsNetwork.tv for access to the full-length art instruction on How to Draw Birds.
