Watch more Craft Beer Guide videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/515473-Belgian-and-BelgianStyle-Beer-Craft-Beer Belgium as a region held onto a wide range of their ancient brewing techniques. There are many things that set Belgian beers apart from other beers. The first primary reason is their yeast. Over the years their yeast really developed into something very distinct and special. Belgian beers can also be slightly spiced. You might find bits of orange peel, coriander, or even pepper in them. Also in Belgian beer, they will use sometimes dark caramelized sugar, commonly referred to as candy sugar. And that's, they can also actually use the light candy sugar in some of their beers too. What happens there is the, when you're drinking a dark Belgian, instead of the roasty and sort of chocolate flavors that come from roasted malt, those flavors get substituted for more raisin-like, toffee, or creme brûlée type flavors. So that's an element that you're going to find that's usually a little bit different in Belgian or Belgian-style beers. It's really interesting, in the craft beer movement in the United States there were a few importers, like Vanberg & DeWulf, who famously imported Saison Dupont and it really just turned the beer world on its head. People were inspired. You know, some people might even say that was the genesis of this latest resurgence of the craft beer movement where, you know, these Belgian beers that were imported showing everybody, you know, some of the wide range of what beers can be. You can see the influence of Belgian beers and Belgian imports just in the fact of how many American craft brewers do Belgian styles, like doubles, triples, saisons, and witbiers. So Belgian beer has had a huge, huge impact on the beer world and the craft beer world specifically here in America.

Beer 101: German vs. Belgian Beer

01:55
The Beer Knight discusses the difference between beer from Germany and beer from Belgium.
Top 10 Belgian Beers

03:31
Welcome to 2 Dudes and a 6 Pack, where today we’ll be looking at the top 10 Belgian beers. Widely regarded as one of the best beer producing countries in the world, what ten beers rein supreme? We use a composite rating of Beer Advocate and Rate Beer ratings to determine our top 10. Ahead of time, I’d like to apologize for my pronunciation of some of these beers. Starting of the list at number 10 is St. Bernardus Abby 12. This Quadrupel style beer has an ABV of 10 percent with an overall composite rating of 4.28 out of five. 9 on the list is Cantillon’s Fou Foune. This lambic style beer brings fruity notes to the top 10 with an ABV of 5 percent. It also features a composite rating of 4.28 out of 5. 8 on the list is 3 Fonteinen Oude Geuze Vintage. Another Lambic style beer, this classic Belgian beer has a 6 percent ABV and a total rating of 4.29. The 7 spot on the list is Lou Pepe Pure Kriek. The second beer from Cantillon. Another Lambic style fruit beer, the cherry based beer has an ABV of 5 percent and a total rating of 4.29. 6th and just out of the top 5 is Biabaer Lambik from Cantillon. As lambics begin to dominate this list, the beer has a unique vintage every year. The current summer lambic has a 5 percent ABV for a composite rating of 4.33. At number 5 is 3 Fonteinen’s Framboos. This special raspberry lambic has an ABV of 6 percent and notches a composite rating of 4.335 out of 5. Batting 4th on the list of top 10 Belgian beers is (Ves-Vel-Teren’s) Wesveleteren’s 8. A break from the lambics, this Belgian Strong Ale from the classic Trappist brewery has an 8 percent ABV and a total rating of 4.34. Number 3 is Rochefort 10. Another classic trappist beer from the Rochefort brewery, this Quadrupel style beer as a 11.3 percent ABV and a total composite rating of 4.385. 2nd and just out of the top 10 is 3 Fontenien’s Zenne Y Frontera. The return of this lambic style beer has a higher 7 percent ABV and a total composite rating of 4.42 out of 5. The top spot on our list of top 10 Belgian beers is Westvleteren 12. This quadruple 10.2 percent ABV beer is one of the most sought after beers in the world. With a commanding composite rating of 4.52, it makes sense why. Well, there you have it. The top 10 Belgian beers in the world. Dominated by lambics and quadruple trappist beers, a host of 4 plus composite rated beers didn’t make the cut simply because of the overall quality you find in Belgium. Do you have a favorite Belgian beer that didn’t make the top 10? Let me know in the comments and make sure to like and subscribe for more top 10 beer lists.

All about the Saison beer style with Jef Van Den Steen, master saison brewer.

03:43
If you watch no other interviews about beer this year, watch this one. One of the greatest characters I have come across on my travels. His name is Jef Van Den Steen, owner of Brewery De Glazen Toren and he is about as passionate about Saisons as anyone on the planet. Not to mention the fact that the saison he produces in his tiny backyard brewery was recently awarded as the second best in the whole of Belgium, just behind Dupont!!

New Belgium Spring Blonde Belgian Style Ale: About the beer

02:53
Blondes are a favorite style among New Belgium employee-owners who have celebrated their 5-year anniversary with a spring trip to Belgium. These travels inspired our Spring Blonde and brought some old Belgium to New Belgium. Brewed with pale and Munich malts, this golden ale pours bright copper and holds a strong, white head aloft. A nose of lemon peel, pepper, and fresh baked bread entice a sipping. Spring Blonde drinks malty, sweet and wonderful. And the easy Nugget hopping pedals towards a dry, lightly bitter finish. Shed that coat, grab some bikes, and crack some beers.

Two years later, Fat Tire – named in honor of his inspired bike ride across the Belgian countryside – pedaled its way into the hearts of beer drinkers. Now considered an iconic centerpiece of the craft beer movement, Fat Tire represents the American spirit of craft brewing ingenuity and an irresistible imagination that reminds us all to rediscover our playful side. Fat Tire’s unique flavor profile originates from the late 1930s, when local Belgian breweries aimed to satisfy the tastes of visiting British soldiers. English floral hops, subtle malt sweetness and spicy, fruity notes from Belgian yeast made for a balanced yet magical combination. These same characteristics are at the heart of Fat Tire. Classified as an Ameri-Belgo style ale by the revered Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup competitions, Fat Tire blends a fine malt presence, fresh herbal hop balance and a touch of fruity yeast to offer drinkers everywhere a timeless craft beer experience with a rare blend of balance and complexity.
