How fast fashion adds to the world's clothing waste problem (Marketplace)
Fast fashion is a major contributor to the world's clothing waste problem. Many of us give our old clothes to charity or drop them in a store take-back bin, but you might be surprised to learn most of it is sold and can end up in the landfill. Breaking News - Are CGI models taking over fashion?
From Instagram to Balmain: The rise of CGI models These three models are the faces of Balmain's new campaign. They have the perfect angular cheekbones and ooze glamour most could never manage. But Shudu, Margot and Zhi don't exist. They're the latest in a line of computer-generated models being used in advertising. Balmain worked with British photographer Cameron James-Wilson, who created digital supermodel Shudu last year. Shudu has now gone from having her Instagram featured by Rihanna's make-up brand Fenty Beauty to being at the centre of a major fashion campaign - all without existing in real life. But what does this mean for real models?'Competing with literally unreal girls is really scary'Louise Stone is a model from London who's worked on campaigns with L'Oreal and Adidas. The 24-year-old is worried this new wave of CGI models could make an already competitive industry more difficult to navigate. It's just so easy to be replaceable, she told Radio 1 Newsbeat. To have to compete with literally unreal girls is just really scary - you can shape anything you want and have the exact perfect look without the casting process.A big criticism of Shudu has been that the black CGI model is taking up space which could be filled by a real black model.Lots of these CGI models are actually based on women of colour, said Louise.Models in general have it hard enough with how competitive the industry is - models of colour have an extra point to prove and have to work harder.Dominique Robinson landed a campaign with Tyra Banks after the supermodel commented on one of her Instagram photos. She said she was in shock when she first saw the Balmain campaign. She thinks models need to talk about what it could mean for their careers.Girls work their entire career hoping to book a Balmain campaign, or any campaign really, she said.If it's just that easy to hand a campaign to CGI models… what does the future of e-commerce look like for us?And News Today, Breaking News, Breaking news today, US News, UK News, trump news, World news

Breaking News - Supermodel Paulina Porizkova hits out at fashion industry
Supermodel Paulina Porizkova claimed the fashion industry no longer 'creates idols' as she returned to the London catwalk after 30 years. The 52-year-old star, who burst onto the scene as a teenager in the 1980s, admitted the fashion industry has changed so much since her debut that she 'hardly recognises it'.Speaking to FEMAIL while in the UK for London Fashion Week, Paulina said that to be successful now models need to be celebrities before they hit the runway. She said: 'When I started in 1980, the photographers held the power and you had to be nice to the photographers.'Then, the models took over. We became more powerful than the photographers, the editors and, sometimes, even more powerful than the magazine for which we posed.'It was the beginning of the model as a celebrity culture. We, through modelling, became the celebrities. Now it seems you have to be a celebrity before you become a model.'She added: 'The fashion business no longer creates the idols. Now it just offers them a free ride.'This week Czech-born Paulina closed the Jiri Kalfar show, her first London Fashion Week appearance in three decades. But the model said it felt like 'riding a bicycle'.'The muscle memory was intact, and the breeze and the view were fantastic,' she said.Paulina was just 13 and living in Sweden with her mother and brother when she was discovered. Her friend, a budding make-up artist, had given Paulina a makeover and sent her photo into a local modelling agency. The image ended up in front of American founder of Elite Model Management, John Casablancas, who invited her to Copenhagen. From there, success was swift and Paulina soon became Paris' most in-demand model. In 1984 she made history when she became the first woman from Central Europe to grace the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issueIt also led to her appearing in the music video for The Cars' single Drive, which led to her meeting her future husband, singer Ric Ocasek. The couple have been married since 1989 and have two sons together. The family live in New York. AutoNews- Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-5418621/Supermodel-Paulina-Porizkova-hits-fashion-industry.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

Fashion Clip™ Breaking News
Breaking news on the hottest women's fashion accessory in years - the Fashion Clip™. If it looks good on a grandpa, how great will it look on you?
Breaking News One - Fashion assistants share real life horror stories
Breaking News One - Fashion assistants share real life horror stories The Devil Wears Prada might seem far fetched to anyone who hasn't worked in the fashion industry or on a glossy magazine. But when it comes to working in the fashion industry, more often than not, reality is stranger than fiction and assistants can attest to horrific working conditions and less than professional bosses who made their lives a living hell. And now a disgruntled fashion assistant is providing a safe space of sorts for others who want to share their experiences or workplace woes on Instagram.Created under the username @fashionassistant, the anonymous account which started in December 2017, posts screen shots of horror tales from those who have worked or are currently working in the fashion industry.Named of individuals are blacked out to protect the identities and the founder of the account doesn't have any plans on naming and shaming either.‘This is not a burn book, per se (ok it kind of is, it’s an anonymous burn book) the aim is not to watch the industry crumble but to get the conversation about bullying started, which it has. Plus, we still need a job after all of this,' she wrote in one post.On the page, one New York based fashion assistant shared how she worked 17 hour days for five days straight and when the stylist she was assisting came back from a work trip, sent her a series of abusive text messages asking her what she had been doing. While another assistant shared a similar story detailing how a designer she worked for at fashion week didn't let her eat for two days and at one point 'snatched a hanger out of my hand' and told her it was clear her mom had been doing everything for her.One designer even made the people on her team sleep in 'cupboards' before a big show, with an unnamed assistant revealing that the anonymous designer 'is notorious for her disgusting behaviour'.'Such as members of the design team being made to sleep in cupboards in the days leading up to her show,' the assistant explained.'While casting for her shows, she makes negative comments about models in their presence. And on one occasion, after casting two black girls she said, "OK that's it, I have all the black girls I need."'Another assistant revealed verbal abuse: 'I interned for a big celeb stylist. On set for a shoot with a big celeb, she told me to charge her phone in her car.'I came back and reported to her that the charger was broken.'In front of the ENTIRE crew and celeb, she threw her phone on the ground, broke it, and yelled that thanks to me her friend was now going to kill himself and it would be all my fault because I couldn't charge her phone.'While another discussed the taboo subject of non-payment, writing: 'I worked for a stylist last year for over a month that owes me $1,000 and have since met several other assistants that she owes multiple thousands to.'Since there's no contract between us and magazines, the client, or even stylist, there's no guarantee that we will get paid.'And speaking to Refinery29, the owner of the account shar Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-5442169/Fashion-assistants-share-real-life-horror-stories.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

Breaking News - SHARE PUNT OF THE WEEK: Online fashion retailer Sosandar
What is it?Sosandar is an online fashion retailer aiming to emulate the success of Asos and Boohoo. It was launched in 2016 by Ali Hall and Julie Lavington who had established leading fashion magazine Look in 2007.They had identified a gap in a market – now worth an estimated £3.7bn a year – for women over the age of 30 looking to combine professional clothing with the latest trends. It joined AIM earlier this month in a tie-up with cash shell Orogen. The company raised £5.3m at 15.1p a share that will be used to fund further expansion and raise brand awareness.Sosandar’s listing attracted a number of institutions, including investment house Miton, while Group Saracens owner Nigel Wray also snapped up a stake.Joint chief executives Hall and Lavington now own about 5 per cent each. Why you should investDespite being just over a year old, Sosandar has already made its mark in the fashion industry and is a firm favourite among social media influencers and celebrities, including This Morning presenter Holly Willoughby. The company has average order values already greater than other well-known online-only fashion retailers and is rapidly becoming a one-stop destination for fashionable clothing, design inspiration and also advice on style and clothes. The simplicity of the business model means the company is readily scalable – meaning it can grow quickly – suggesting Sosandar is well-placed to achieve similar profitable growth as other listed online retailers. And why you shouldn’tThe company has a relatively limited trading history – having achieved total gross sales for the 11 months ended July 31, 2017 of £847,000 and net sales (after returns) of £478,000.It appears to be moving in the right direction but some investors may take more comfort once the firm has matured and published more updates. Breaking News - Victoria's Secret model talks about diversity in the fashion industry
A Victoria's Secret model has made a passionate plea for more diversity in fashion, while questioning why the industry is failing to answer demands for 'change and inclusion'.Dilone, 23, of Long Island, walked for the lingerie company during its 2017 fashion show and starred in a Versace campaign. But despite working for top brands, the model, who is of Dominican descent, said there is still a ways to go to ensure that all ethnic groups have the opportunity to flourish.Following a discussion at the Tory Burch Embrace Ambition Summit last Tuesday, she told Teen Vogue: 'I don't understand why it has to be so complex. Just do it. Include more girls. Aren't you so tired of it? Aren't you supposed to be creative?''Being creative to me is challenging the status quo and trying new things and being with the times. Right now people are saying we want change and inclusion so where is it? Give it to us.'Dilone, who is known mononymously by her last name, said that the same principles apply to Victoria's Secret and maybe even more so because it is such a well-known brand. She said: 'My family wasn't too excited when I did other things but they were excited when I did Victoria's Secret because they connected to it because it's there, it's in our homes.'Last November, Victoria's Secret hosted its most diverse fashion show ever, with nearly 50 per cent of the models cast for its 2017 catwalk being Asian, black, or Hispanic.Dilone added: 'I think a lot of other brands are going to follow in their footsteps when they see this inclusion.'Hopefully that is the case as there have been strides in making the entertainment and fashion industry more inclusive, partially due to the brave women who came forward during the Me Too movement. At the summit, other women from all different industries such as, media, fashion, comedy, science, sports, took the stage discuss ways to fight the issue. One of those people was Australian photographer, model and director, Margaret Zang who discussed how having more female photographers would positively impact the fashion industry. The 24-year-old said: 'When I'm shooting women I want to know what makes them comfortable and that will inform the way I photograph them.''A lot of models will say that it's highly unusual or that's never happened to them. I shoot with a female crew and a lot of celebrities or talent at the end of the day will be like "just so you know, I have never shot with a primarily female crew and that made such a difference and it shows in the imagery.'"Another panel, hosted by actress Zoey Deutch, featured Marley Diaz and young activists Madison Kimrey and Naomi Wadler. Before answering her question at the panel, Marley listed her accomplishments with one of them being the founder of #1000BlackGirlBooks - a social call to action that promotes books that have black girls as the main characters. She later revealed that she decided to do that because 'she was nervous but had a purpose'.She said: 'I came out to show me and for AutoNews- Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-5666535/Victorias-Secret-model-talks-diversity-fashion-industry.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

Breaking News - Fashion failure risks 350 jobs as Bench becomes the latest High Street retailer to
Bench has become the latest High Street retailer to collapse, putting nearly 350 jobs at risk. The fashion retailer, founded in Manchester in 1989, has called in the administrators after bosses struggled to turn around its fortunes. It made a £2.3million loss in 2016, according to accounts at Companies House, and its books for 2017 are overdue. The company employs 176 in the UK, where it has 20 stores, and 170 in its 15 stores in Germany. The stores will continue to trade for now.Bench, which has been owned by German investment firm Emeram since 2014, said tough conditions in the retail market and 'a major logistics issue' two years ago were factors that led to its current problems.Barry Knight, the retailer's chief executive, said: 'Our task now, together with the administrator, is to achieve the best possible outcome in this situation.' Breaking News - British schoolgirl wows on catwalk for London Fashion Week
A schoolgirl from Blackburn is setting the modelling world alight - at the age of just eight.Lexi Griffin began modelling last year and hasn't looked back; she's just returned from a dream trip walking several fashion shows in London and New York.Mingling with some of the world's top models, Lexi has just finished walking at London Fashion Week, where she modelled collections for two fashion designers - Be Unique Be You and Lavender Rose Designs. The youngster, who started modelling at the age of seven, proved she had nerves of steel as strutted her stuff in front of over 70 photographers.Speaking about what it's like to make it as a young model, Lexi clearly has her feet firmly on the ground, saying: 'You should never ever doubt yourself - the most important thing is doing your best each time.'If you lose or fail, get up and do it again, always be kind and just have fun.'Lexi's dream of being a model lead her to being fashion scouted to model on the runway for fashion designs such as Wanda Beauchamp and Janay Deann Designs. The pupil at Meadowhead junior school, Blackburn, Lancashire, walked the runway at the Cosmopolitan Top Model event after jetting off to America in December last year.Proud mum Sonya, 31, said: 'Lexi began modelling last year at the age of seven and from that moment on it has been her passion - I couldn't be more proud.'Sonya, of Livesey, near Blackburn, added: 'Lexi has learned the true meaning that beauty is being comfortable in your own skin and it's about knowing and accepting who you are.'The family have little fears about Lexi missing out on her education, saying that the youngster is tapping into a rich life of new experience.'This is a very special time for Lexi. The new experiences, learning new things and learning how to have fun is so important whilst she's chasing her dreams.' Breaking News - Animal charities hit out at fashion's fling with feathers
Animal charities have hit out at the 'archaic' trend for celebrities wearing feathers on the red carpet. In the same year that fashion giants from DKNY to Versace announced plans to ditch fur for ethical reasons, awards ceremonies were awash with marabou, ostrich, turkey and rooster feathers. While feathers are no new thing in the fashion world, the explosion of plumage in the form of stoles, shawls, gowns and even shoes in recent months has been hard to miss. And according to animal charity PETA, despite many designers insisting their feathers are ethically sourced, abuse is 'commonplace' within the industry - and labels claiming otherwise 'aren't to be trusted'.Angelina Jolie reignited the feather trend in January with her strapless Ralph & Russo frock trimmed with devoré ostrich feathers at the Critics' Choice Awards. She was closely followed by a host of stars from Emma Roberts to Naomi Campbell, Rita Ora, Holly Willoughby and even Monégasque royal Charlotte Casiraghi, the granddaughter of Grace Kelly - all of whom chose feathers to complete their look. And while many designers will insist their feathers are either synthetic or 'ethically' farmed - ie a byproduct of the meat industry - their exact provenance can be hard to trace.Claire Bass, executive director of Humane Society International (HSI) told FEMAIL: 'When dyed bright colours, covered in glitter and paraded on catwalks it is easy to forget that feathers are not harmless embellishments but products of an industry that is far from bright and beautiful.'Whether birds like roosters are farmed specifically for their feathers, or the feathers are taken from birds killed in the meat industry, suffering is rife.'Undercover investigations have shown the agonising process of birds being live plucked to supply the down industry and baby ostriches having their throats cut and their feathers torn from their skin to create accessories like boas.'To avoid animal suffering we urge people to follow top designer Stella McCartney's example and make sure their fashion is fabulously feather-free.'McCartney is just one of a handful of major brands to completely eschew leather, skin, fur or feathers - and while it's impossible to verify that designers are using genuine feathers in their clothing, bird plumage is notoriously difficult to replicate. In a statement to MailOnline FEMAIL, PETA director Elisa Allen said that regardless of whether the birds are being killed for their meat, their feathers are still 'stolen property'.Allen said: 'Wearing bits and pieces of animal's bodies is an archaic practice that carries echoes of their suffering – which is why cutting-edge designers are increasingly choosing vegan fabrics to create show-stopping looks that are as stylish as they are kind and more desirable to today's conscientious consumers.'Away from the red carpet, brands such as Prada openly sell ostrich and turkey trimmed cardigans online, while even the UK high street has caught on, with retailers like Topshop AutoNews- Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-5581217/Animal-charities-hit-fashions-fling-feathers.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490

Breaking News - Princess Mary stuns in suit at Copenhagen Fashion Week
It may only be day one of Copenhagen Fashion Week but Crown Princess Mary of Denmark has already come out on top in the style stakes. The 45-year-old arrived at the exclusive Hotel d'Angleterre in Copenhagen on Tuesday to present the annual Designers' Nest Award for 2018 - an accolade created to reward a promising design student with DKK 50,000 (AUD $10,308).The effortlessly stylish royal ensured all eyes were on her as she arrived at the hotel in a burgundy and 'petrol blue' suit by one of her favourite designers, Jesper Høvring, and a new coat in the same shade of blue.Keeping her look stylish with a touch of edge, the mother-of-four accessorised with a pair of AUD $700 Leopard-Print Calf Hair Pumps by Gianvito Rossi and a Carlend Copenhagen python clutch. She completed the look with an understated yellow gold Orit Elhanati necklace worth AUD $2,200, AUD $3,000 gold earrings by Dulong Fine Jewelery and a number of bracelets.Mary was all smiles as she arrived at the award ceremony and spent time meeting members of the public who greeted her with flowers. She then met with a number of design students before presenting the prestigious prize to this year's winner, Axel Enqvist, who describes himself as being 'interested in the functionality of clothes'.It's been a busy week for the Princess, who on Friday attended the 2018 Women's Board Award in an elegant yet edgy get-up.Mary was seen laughing and chatting with guests as she arrived at the Copenhagen ceremony before presenting the award to the 2018 winner and addressing the attendees.Always one to experiment with her style, the Princess donned a chic camo blouse believed to be from Proenza Schouler and a striking new knee-length leather skirt. The skirt featured a sheer panel along the hem and its A-line shape balanced the high neck blouse and flattered her shape.Mary completed her look with a pair of snakeskin Prada pumps and understated jewellery by her favourite jeweller, Ole Lynggaard Copenhagen. The look divided the online fashion community, however, with style bloggers debating the royal's outfit on various royal style forums.'Leather can be very elegant, but this is not how it's done. Leather needs simple, no-fuss items... Mary's outfit is guilty of that,' one blogger wrote.'I think she looks good, and appropriate for the event. I think the skirt is interesting and the hem treatment lightens it up,' another argued.Despite her increasingly demanding schedule, the mother-of-four appeared relaxed and cheerful as she mingled with attendees and posed for snaps with fellow presenters. The Women's Board Award, of which Princess Mary is a patron, has been held annually since 2014 and was established to put a focus on the achievements of women in management and on boards. The partners behind the Women's Board Award are among the companies that have chosen to place a positive focus on the challenge of putting diversity on the strategic agenda. This year, Princess Mary awarded the prize to Marianne Kirkegaard AutoNews- Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-5331865/Princess-Mary-stuns-suit-Copenhagen-Fashion-Week.html?ITO=1490&ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490
