1.22.09 Personal Genome Computing: Breakthroughs, Risks and Opportunities

01:35:51
"Technology breakthroughs are making DNA sequencing faster and cheaper than ever. In its top ten list of 2008 scientific breakthroughs that broke through with the potential for lasting impact, Science magazine included technology that has blown the doors off genome sequencing. In Nature magazines list of the top news stories of 2008, "Personal genomics goes mainstream" came in second. With the cost of DNA sequencing plummeting, the emergence of "molecular sequencing" platforms has forever changed the field of genetics. A new paradigm appears on the horizon. Personal genome information will be used not just for health maintenance, disease diagnosis, and treatment, but will also be the foundation for lifestyle applications from shopping for food, to buying cosmetics, to assessing ones environment and making choices about fabrics, places - even friends. This panel of Silicon Valley players and innovators of new business models examines the dynamic business and investment opportunities as well as the risks, global competition, regulatory and legal challenges, new individual contributor roles, and leading alliances emerging from Silicon Valley and beyond. Silicon Valley changed the world as the driving force in the development of computers and the internet. Could we play a similar role in advancing a genome-based economy?". First Test of a New Build of the Classic COSMAC ELF Computer

04:02
Back in 1976, I saw the Popular Electronics magazine article for building the very inexpensive COSMAC ELF microcomputer project, and wanted to make one but somehow never did. Now that I am revisiting vintage computers, I decided to make a new build of the original design, keeping the circuit, dimensions, appearance and functionality identical. I decided to not implement any of the improvements and add-ons suggested by later articles (such as hexadecimal keypad, video output, etc). This computer would be for display and possible demonstration, not for practical use. I tried to make it with high build quality and the best appearance that I could manage. All parts were bought new for this project, or home made. I used 'new old stock' suppliers for the parts that are no longer made, such as the CPU, RAM, and unusual LED displays. I plan to publish my CAD drawn final circuit and parts list, including suppliers that I used, soon....and when I figure out WHERE to make those files available.

The Fortune 500 is an annual list compiled and published by Fortune magazine that ranks 500 of the largest United States corporations by total revenue for their respective fiscal years. The list includes publicly held companies, along with privately held companies for which revenues are publicly available. The concept of the Fortune 500 was created by Edgar P. Smith, a Fortune editor, and the first list was published in 1955. The Fortune 500 is more commonly used than its subset Fortune 100 or wider list Fortune 1000. • How to make money from Fortune 500 Companies? Every year, Fortune magazine compiles their Fortune 500 list of American companies. This list ranks 500 public and private American companies in terms of yearly revenue, or the money they earn from selling goods and services in a single year. They determine the revenue through documents provided to the public and interviews with key company officials about their revenue streams. It’s safe to say that earning a position on the Fortune 500 is a pretty impressive feat. The companies on each yearly list make hundreds of millions, if not billions of dollars in a single year. What they do with that money and how it accounts for their profit is unique to each company. Yet the Fortune 500 is sort of like a list of the wealthiest people alive — only replace those people with corporations. Today, Fortunate announced the top 10 earning companies on the Fortune 500. These American brands are well known throughout the world and brought it a minimum $150 billion in revenue during their 2016 financial year. Best of all, these 10 companies are all publicly traded, which means you can invest in them, too. Before you invest in any of these companies, you should probably know what they make and how they bring in ungodly amounts of money. Fortunately, we took the liberty to examine each company in the Fortune Top 10 and see what makes them so much cash.

Along with each video is a list of the games in the order that they appear. We'd also like to mention that we used SlideShow from Compute's Gazette GEOS Collection and GEOS GeoWrite from Berkeley Softworks to make the introduction on this tape and the credits. Some of the fonts are from Power Pak 1 & 2 from RUN magazine. The Wizard pointer at the beginning is by Mystic Jim. A cool, we think, video my husband and I made on VHS showing some Commodore 64 video games from back in the day. I was the player of these games. That's my husband's voice on the video. I know, I wasn't the greatest at the games. But, hey, we had fun doing this! We did it to give people an idea of what the games looked like before the Internet. I've broken it up into several sections on YouTube. We own nothing on this and the other videos in this series. Hope you enjoy it! My husband and I took out an ad in Run Magazine to sell this VHS video that we made. We never made any money. Please don't leave any nasty comments. Unfortunately we never kept a list o the movies on the VHS tape, so I'm listening to the videos and writing down the names of the games from what my husband says. If I'm wrong on any of my names etc. please let me know in a comment below. 1-5 were captured onto my computer with a video capture device. I couldn't get it to work for 6-10. I set up my digital camera in front of my TV and played the VHS tape and recorded them that way. I had to keep quiet the whole time. :-) By angelstar22 http://angelstarcreations.com

Report: NSA Intercepts Computer Deliveries

00:51
LONDON (AP) - A German magazine lifted the lid on the operations of the National Security Agency's hacking unit Sunday, reporting that American spies intercept computer deliveries, exploit hardware vulnerabilities, and even hijack Microsoft's internal reporting system to spy on their targets. Der Spiegel's revelations relate to a division of the NSA known as Tailored Access Operations, or TAO, which is painted as an elite team of hackers specializing in stealing data from the toughest of targets. Citing internal NSA documents, the magazine said Sunday that TAO's mission was "Getting the ungettable," and quoted an unnamed intelligence official as saying that TAO had gathered "some of the most significant intelligence our country has ever seen." Der Spiegel said TAO had a catalog of high-tech gadgets for particularly hard-to-crack cases, including computer monitor cables specially modified to record what is being typed across the screen, USB sticks secretly fitted with radio transmitters to broadcast stolen data over the airwaves, and fake base stations intended to intercept mobile phone signals on the go. The NSA doesn't just rely on James Bond-style spy gear, the magazine said. Some of the attacks described by Der Spiegel exploit weaknesses in the architecture of the Internet to deliver malicious software to specific computers. Others take advantage of weaknesses in hardware or software distributed by some of the world's leading information technology companies, including Cisco Systems, Inc. and China's Huawei Technologies Ltd., the magazine reported. Der Spiegel cited a 2008 mail order catalog-style list of vulnerabilities that NSA spies could exploit from companies such as Irvine, California-based Western Digital Corp. or Round Rock, Texas-based Dell Inc. The magazine said that suggested the agency was "compromising the technology and products of American companies." Old-fashioned methods get a mention too. Der Spiegel said that if the NSA tracked a target ordering a new computer or other electronic accessories, TAO could tap its allies in the FBI and the CIA, intercept the hardware in transit, and take it to a secret workshop where it could be discretely fitted with espionage software before being sent on its way. Intercepting computer equipment in such a way is among the NSA's "most productive operations," and has helped harvest intelligence from around the world, one document cited by Der Spiegel stated. One of the most striking reported revelations concerned the NSA's alleged ability to spy on Microsoft Corp.'s crash reports, familiar to many users of the Windows operating system as the dialogue box which pops up when a game freezes or a Word document dies. The reporting system is intended to help Microsoft engineers improve their products and fix bugs, but Der Spiegel said the NSA was also sifting through the reports to help spies break into machines running Windows. One NSA document cited by the magazine appeared to poke fun at Microsoft's expense, replacing the software giant's standard error report message with the words: "This information may be intercepted by a foreign sigint (signals intelligence) system to gather detailed information and better exploit your machine." Microsoft said that information sent by customers about technical issues in such a manner is limited. Microsoft is one of several U.S. firms that have demanded more transparency from the NSA - and worked to bolster their security - in the wake of the revelations of former intelligence worker Edward Snowden, whose disclosures have ignited an international debate over privacy and surveillance. Der Spiegel did not explicitly say where its cache NSA documents had come from, although the magazine has previously published a series of stories based on documents leaked by Snowden, and one of Snowden's key contacts - American documentary filmmaker Laura Poitras - was listed among the article's six authors. No one was immediately available at Der Spiegel to clarify whether Snowden was the source for the latest story. Another company mentioned by Der Spiegel, though not directly linked with any NSA activity, was Juniper Networks Inc., a computer network equipment maker in Sunnyvale, Calif. "Juniper Networks recently became aware of, and is currently investigating, alleged security compromises of technology products made by a number of companies, including Juniper," the company said in an email. "We take allegations of this nature very seriously and are working actively to address any possible exploit paths."

XMosaic 1.2 Running Under X-Windows on a Macintosh

01:36
As part of an article I am writing for IEEE Computer Magazine, I wanted to see if I could get XMosaic 1.2 running on my Macintosh. After about an hour of hacking it complied and worked. - The code is available on https://github.com/csev/xmosaic-1.2 if you want to give it a try. My IEEE Computer Column videos are available at http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4660FB7F523B1770 and an audio podcast of the articles is available on iTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/computing-conversations/id731495760

8 Infamous Computer Hackers Of All Time !

09:28
These Hackers are some of the most wanted criminals of modern times! From people hacking into radio stations to people hacking into the governments security database! These are 8 Infamous Computer Hackers Of All Time ! 1. Kevin Poulsen Most people would know Kevin Poulsen these days as the senior editor of monthly technological magazine Wired. He actually was the first person to report on the arrest of Chelsea Manning. But, before this he was known under another alias, ‘Dark Dante’. As you can guess he wasn’t known for many good reasons. He initially took over all the telephone lines of a Los Angeles radio station in 1990, guaranteeing he would win the competition prize of a Porsche 944 S2. The FBI began pursuing Poulsen, feeling he was a threat to national security and had to be stopped. He then went underground as a fugitive, and as he was featured on the show ‘Unsolved Mysteries’ all of the 1800 numbers on the show went down. Kevin Poulsen was arrested in 1991 after surviving over a year as a fugitive. He pleaded guilty to computer fraud and went to prison for 5 years. Towards the end of these 5 years, he became a journalist and published his first magazine feature in 1998, in the magazine wired, that he is now the senior editor of. 2. Legion of Doom No, not the black and red spiked wrestlers! The Legion of Doom was a collective of hackers formed around 1984, widely considered to be the most capable hacking groups in the world. In the summer of the year, there was a huge surge in interest in computer telecommunications. An extremely young hacker who went by the name of Lex Luthor was partly in charge of a bulletin board system called Plover-NET, after he was chucked out of a group known as the Knights of Shadow, he began a group known as the Legion of Doom, though he wasn’t the owner, he was seen as the chief recruiter. They claimed not to cause much damage to telephone services or computer networks, and most notably penned the ‘Legion of Doom Technical Journals’, a regular journal that shared hacking information and knowledge to a wide audience of people who had become interested. Only a few of the original LOD members are accounted for, many were arrested in busts, as the group, though not causing direct harm to anyone, did break the right to privacy on many occasions. Though the group is now defective, the legend of the Legion of Doom lives on. 3. Sven Jaschan Reported as being a shy and quiet person, Jaschan lived in a small village in Germany when he made a huge leap into the Computer Hacker rankings. He was author of the NetSky and Sasser computer worms, viruses that were supposedly causing a massive 70% of the malware occuring on computers at that time. However he was tried as a minor, as the virus was actually released on the day of his 18th birthday! Very lucky for Sven, he only got a 21 month sentence. It is reported that the tip off about Sven’s virus work was actually from a classmate that he had boasted to. A Microsoft official was the one to catch Sven and bring him in. As there were multiple tip offs, the 250 grand prize money was split was shared between them. After he served his time, Sven Jaschan became a worker for Germany cyber security company SecurePoint. 4. Adrian Lamo Bit of a more modern hacker, Adrian Lamo started off in a comical way. He actually hacked into the New York Times database and added his name to the list of experts. A great way start, however, he also broke into the NYT’s LexisNexis account and conducted a bit of research on extremely high-profile people. He surrounded himself to the police and was sentenced to a six month detention. A lot later in 2009 he was outed as being a donor to the WikiLeaks website (though WikiLeaks founder Assange reports he has only donated $20 on one occasion). And in 2010 he indirectly reported to US authority that Chelsea Manning claimed to have leaked a large body of classified documents, including over 200,000 classified diplomatic data cables. He is known within the hacking network by many as a snitch for these actions. But he definitely earns his place on this list, no matter if his actions were morally good or bad. 5. Ryan Collins Ryan Collins makes this list solely due to how much trouble he caused in the celeb world, he was responsible for what became known as ‘CelebGate’, which was the leaking of nude photos of celebrities such as Jennifer Lawrence and Kate Upton onto the internet. Ryan done this by sending emails to the celebrities posing as Apple, asking them to change their passwords. Once he had retained the celebrities account passwords, he then gained access to their iCloud accounts, where he saved the files he found. The identity of Ryan Collins is something that is up for debate. He was supposedly a happily married man and a father of two. When the whole story became clear, newspapers went looking for information on who this man was, and didn’t find much to point
