Adrian Mole Author Sue Townsend Laid To Rest

02:00
The funeral of Adrian Mole author Sue Townsend has taken place in front of hundreds of mourners in her home city of Leicester. Amongst them was actor Stephen Mangan who played Adrian Mole in the television adaptation of her best known book. He read an extract from Mr Bevan's Dream, which is about the welfare state in the 1980s. Ms Townsend was described as 'wonderful, warm and witty' by Tony Howes Afterwards he said: "She was a wonderful woman, warm and witty. She was hilarious and sometimes cutting, but never cruel. She sold millions of books around the world and you don't do that if you are not connecting with people." The 68-year-old author died in April from a stroke. She suffered from diabetes and had been registered blind. Some 500 friends, family and fans gathered in Leicester's De Montfort Hall. A big screen relayed proceedings to people outside. Members of the public watched proceedings on a screen outside the hall Her second husband Colin Broadway and her four children; Sean, Daniel, Victoria and Elizabeth, heard a number of heartfelt tributes during the hour-long service. TV chef Jamie Oliver was also there to pay his respects. Sue Townsend left school at the age of 15 and by 23 she was a poverty-stricken single mother of three. The author was into her 30s when her talents were discovered at a writers club in Leicester's Phoenix Theatre. Adrian Mole actor Stephen Mangan It has just been renamed the Sue Townsend Theatre in her honour. At 35 she won the Thames Playwright Award for her play Womberang and a year later published the first in her series about Adrian Mole. She drew much inspiration from her time in Leicester where friends said she had suffered hardship but still loved the city and its people. Actor Tony Howes read from the Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 and 3/4. Before the reading he said: "She was a socialist, she was an idealist and she was kind. She changed my life."

THE SECRET DIARY OF ADRIAN MOLE

01:32
-Tiene su propio encendedor ("she has her own lighter").
