What Does it Take to Be A Fashion Designer?

06:17
Click for more: http://ww2.kqed.org/artschool/ Oakland high school student Zachary Fernandez made it to the finals on the first season of Project Runway Junior, then headed straight back to Oakland School of the Arts to continue his education as a designer. His newest collection, Kathmandu, was inspired by recovery efforts in Nepal after the devastating 2015 earthquake. Art School followed Fernandez's process as he sketched, sourced fabric, and designed his new project, revealed at a culminating fashion show in spring 2016. Hi, my name is Zachary Fernandez and I'm currently a fashion student. So I am starting my Kathmandu 2016 collection. My collection's gonna be debuting at my school fashion show, and so I have little under seven weeks to get this all put together. So our school assignment was to pick a city that we wanted to be inspired by for this collection. I ended with Kathmandu, Nepal, all of the trouble that they went through last year was really inspiring and I was able to take those ideas of imbalance and the destruction of culture and apply that to this new collection. These are the pieces that I ended up designing. They're ever-changing and they kind of just are always in flux. My sketching process involves a lot of images, a lot of mixed medias, I like to do collages, watercolors, acrylic paste, it's a real reflection of what my mind looks like. Here you have the final sketches that I've done. The sketching process for me is really a major step between just ideas and kind of this fantasy world that I've created in my mind to really functional wearable pieces. Fabric sourcing is one of my favorite things to do. It's really like a group activity, like meet a couple of friends, we'll just go, we'll explore the city, we'll get inspiration. So I'm looking for like a very pale blue that's almost like very silverish, and then I'm gonna be looking for a very deep, rust orange color. Okay, so I need to find this, but more grayish blue. The fabric store is one of those places that you go in with one idea and one concept and one thought, and you come out with like 500 more. This is it. - This is it! - This is it. - [Girl] Dude! - Hey! Yes! So I spend the majority of my time draping and it's definitely a part that will make or break a piece. I take a piece of muslin, which is just a really basic blend fabric, and I started sculpting it to the dress form. And then those mock-ups that I make of the dress form are then fitted to the model, and sometimes I try them on a model, I'm like, this is hideous, I don't know why, it just overpowers her or something happens and that leads to even better ideas and even more just, creativeness. When you design while you create, I just think it takes so much longer and you like pressure yourself so much more. So, my design mind is turned off. And it's just about sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing. So after I finish draping, I take a part of that mockup and I totally seam rip it and I re-pattern it, and then I cut out of my real fabric. It's always really nerve-wracking 'cause a lot of times the fabric's all that you have, either the budget doesn't allow for you to get more fabric, or there's simply not anymore left. It has this like box-like structure in it. The box is actually lined with horse-hair so that it can kind of take the shape and that's why I'm kind of trying to like manipulate it right now 'cause it just takes on whatever shape you really need it to. The show, oh the show. Six days, and I'm still cutting up fabric like, I don't think that's normal. There's always going to be that last minute hurry up and finish like state of being. I have a picture in my mind about how this is supposed to go, but who knows if it actually go that way. I think that there can be a lot of different ways to read the look. Obviously you look for like the main things like color, silhouette, is this an evening piece, is this a day piece and you just kind of put the garment and choose certain categories and that really helps people read fashion out, by the time the piece is on the runway I'm already thinking about a whole new collection and I'm really thinking something totally different, but it doesn't really hit me that these people, for them it's the first time that they've seen this. I've spent months and months planning and sketching and putting it together. If I see all these different things in these pieces, but no one else does, then it's kind of sad, but then it's also part of what makes fashion art, is because people see it in so many different ways. We are in my home, studio, bedroom combination in Berkeley, California. I have this look from Project Runway Junior, which was the first episode, and this look for my most recent collection. They really mean a lot to me 'cause they show how much progress I've made within the last four, five months.

15 MOST Luxurious Fashion Brands

11:15
From Oscar de la Renta to Chanel, here are some of the most lavish and prestigious fashion brands. Subscribe to Hindered Thoughts http://goo.gl/d3U3RP 6. Chanel The high fashion wear company was introduced to the world back in 1909 by none other than Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, otherwise known as “Coco Chanel.” This is where the brand gets its inspiration for the famously recognizable logo that is two interlocking C’s. The company specializes in creating haute couture for its wealthy clients but also for fashion models like Naomi Campbell, who once modeled for them, and actresses Marilyn Monroe, Keira Knightley, and Nicole Kidman. One of their most famous products is the perfume No. 5 de Chanel, along with the Chanel Suit. Today, Chanel is valued at being $6.8 billion dollars. An interesting fact to note is that Karl Lagerfeld, the creative director behind Fendi, happens to be the creative director for Chanel as well. 5. Prada Founded back in 1913 by Mario Prada, this fashion brand actually started out by manufacturing leather bags and trunks. It would then evolve into selling everything from clothing to perfume and even a brief stint of LG Prada cell phones. Though the brand may have broadened its inventory, it still spends the majority of its focus creating some of the world’s most exclusive handbags that only the rich and famous can possibly hope to afford. Mario Prada believed that women should not be involved in business so he excluded his own family members from getting involved. In a fantastic twist of irony, his son did not care to run the business so his daughter Luisa Prada took over as his successor and is now currently being run by her daughter Miuccia. 4. House of Versace The fashion empire that is the House of Versace all started with fashion designer Gianni Versace back in 1978. He created a brand that has been synonymous with elegance and simply oozes high fashion. His glamorous gowns have gone on to make a name for himself as a respected designer. Like the case of the famous black dress held with gold safety pins that actress Elizabeth Hurley wore back in 1994 to the premiere of Four Weddings and A Funeral. Sadly, Versace’s life was cut short in 1997 on the steps of his Miami mansion when he became the fifth and final victim of Andrew Cunanan. The tragic event will be the story behind American Crime Story’s season 2 titled: The Assassination of Gianni Versace. After his death, his sister Donatella became the new Artistic Director and has established a $5.5 billion company her brother would be proud of. 3. Gucci Started in 1921 by a Mr. Guccio Gucci, the company was originally dabbing in leather goods. It wasn’t until 19 years later when his son Aldo would take the company from being a one-stop shop into the fashion powerhouse that it’s now known for being. It’s Aldo that would usher in the era of the brand’s iconic “Bamboo Bag” and its “ready to wear segments.” In the 90’s, the company decided to bring American Fashion designer Tom Ford to revamp their women’s wear. He ended up helping launch the brand to where it is today. The fashion brand houses other well-known designers in its collections such as Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, and Yves Saint Laurent. If you’re in the market to do some shopping at this $12.4 billion brand, expect to spend at least $2,000. 2. Louis Vuitton This may come as a shock but the famous fashion brand has been around longer than you might have thought. Formed 163 years ago in 1854, a young man by the name of Louis Vuitton started out as an apprentice for a box-maker. Vuitton ended up becoming a well-known crafter of luxury trunks and opened up his own shop in Paris. He then ended up becoming the personal box-maker of Napoleon III’s wife, Empress Eugenie de Montijo. Fast forward years later and the company is now worth $28.1 billion with a generated revenue of $10.1 billion. Today, Louis Vuitton doesn’t make just trunks but designer handbags and clothing that can be spotted on the most famous of A-listers. 1. Balenciaga The beginning of Balenciaga’s reign began back in 1919 when it was established by its founder of the same name, Cristóbal Balenciaga. As a young child, Balenciaga became an apprentice to a tailor in his hometown of Getaria, Spain and would eventually get his formal training in Madrid. He would go on to create the House of Balenciaga and skyrocketed to success thanks to his artistic genius. He was hailed as the undisputed “ King of Fashion” and was highly respected among his peers which included the likes of Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, and Pierre Balmain. Balenciaga even helped train the likes of high-fashion designers Oscar de la Renta and Hubert Givenchy to name a few.

Top 10 Most Famous Fashion Designers Of All Time

10. Yves Saint Laurent: Yves Saint Laurent became popular in fashion circles due to his creativity in redesigning the clothes considered to be masculine into beautiful, feminine wardrobe for women. Perhaps, one of the most famous fashion designers in France, Yves was the first one to introduce power dressing for women in the form of “power suits” in the year 1966. He is also credited with designing the men’s smoking jacket. 9. Pierre Cardin: The Italian-born Frenchman is lauded for his 20th century pieces that looked as though they were from the 25th century. As Cardin rose to fame in the age of the space race, his creations took on an air of futurism. His so-called bubble dresses had all the fixings of science fiction, combining earthly elegance with out-of-this-world colors and avant garde design. 8. Tom Ford: Tom Ford, counted among the most famous designers today, whose portfolio includes serving as a creative director for both Yves Saint Laurent and Gucci, wanted to be actor when he was growing up. He was born in Texas and even took training to be an actor. But fate had other “designs” for him. Tom ford popularity as a designer reached peaks when in the year 2000, he was declared the winner of the Best International Designer Award. 7. Christian Dior: Born in January of 1905, this French designer was best known for his distinctive “New Look” silhouette. First shown in 1947; his suits and dresses revolutionized the way women dressed after the Second World War. Today, talented designer John Galliano carries on the legendary designer’s legacy in Paris, where he creates dramatic couture ball gowns, chic prêt-a-porter, and luxurious accessories for Dior. 6. Ralph Lauren: Ralph Lauren is worth $7.5 billion, and he got it all because of his fashion sense. In 1970, the first Polo logo was seen in Lauren’s line of women’s suits that was designed in the classic men’s style. Two years later, the famous short sleeve shirt with the Polo emblem appeared, and it soon became a classic. Lauren has been collecting rare and classic cars. The collection is so unique that it has been featured in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. 5. Donatella Versace: She is the sister of Gianni Versace. After the murder of Gianni in 1997, Donatella took over and has taken the Versace name to new heights. Top celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Madonna have endorsed the company’s collection of clothes, accessories, fragrances and home furnishings. 4. Calvin Klein: Born in 1942 in New York, Klein also capitalized on his own charisma and lean good looks. His biggest business rival, Ralph Lauren, was believed to envy Klein’s ability to charm so effortlessly. 3. Giorgio Armani: outstanding Italian fashion designer, particularly noted for his menswear for his clean, tailored lines. He formed his company, Armani, in 1975, and by 2001 was acclaimed as the most successful designer to come out of Italy, with an annual turnover of $1.6 billion and a personal fortune of $7 billion as of 2012. Armani is also the first ever designer to ban models who has a Body Mass Index under 18. 2. Donna Karan: Donna Karan came from a background that was related to fashion in certain ways. This fashion designer worked as a head of a design team for a few number of years and launched some designs that included the very well-known ‘Seven Easy Pieces’. She is the sole creator of the DKNY label (Donna Karen New York). Since then, this label has seen many new additions in the fashion segment. 1. Coco Chanel: Born Gabrielle“Coco” Bonheur Chanel, she is a excellent French fashion designer, founder of the well known Chanel brand, whose modernist thought, practical design, and pursuit of expensive simplicity made her an important and influential figure in 20th-century fashion. What it Takes to Become a Fashion Designer

10:57
In Episode 2 of the Fashion East documentary, we follow the journey of Lulu Kennedy’s newest recruits for their first shows with the designer mentorship scheme, and learn what exactly it takes to become part of Fashion East. First up is recent MA graduate and menswear designer Stefan Cooke, who digitally manipulates timeless fabrics and classic charity shop gems, reproducing the print onto flexible synthetic materials, dressing an army of princes for battle on the runway. To find out what it takes to become a designer, we join Lulu at an inspirational talk to fashion students at Central Saint Martins, meeting the up and coming names who have a Fashion East sponsorship in their sights. Finally we’re introduced to Charlotte Knowles, a womenswear designer that specialises in the tension between revealing and concealing, and the Fashion East team call her into the office for a chat about opportunities in the near future… How do you make the leap from fashion graduate to fully fledged designer? What do the Fashion East team look for in a newcomer? And after having just joined the scheme, will Stefan be ready to show at MAN? Fashion your future: Think more like a fashion designer | Suzi Vaughan | TEDxQUT

12:26
We live in times of unprecedented, disruptive change and uncertainty and most people find it challenging to thrive in those circumstances. If ‘design thinking’ is the new black, then thinking like a fashion design may just be the next big thing! This talk takes the idea of design thinking and translates it into a series of very practical tips that you can employ yourself, every day to help you think more optimistically in times of uncertainty and ambiguity. Professor Suzi Vaughan has settled (for now) in Brisbane, Australia having studied, lived and worked in Europe and Asia. After graduating from St Martins School of Art in London with a Ba Hons in Fashion, she started her professional career as a fashion designer, later moving into fashion education. Since 2011 she has been part of the executive team of a large Australian university. With over thirty years’ experience of design practice and teaching, she has become an advocate for the power and potential of design thinking. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

World Famous Fashion Designer - Best Fashion Designer in the World - Super Charged If you would like an mp3 of this video, you can support this channel by visiting the Bandcamp link below. Much appreciated, Thank you!!! : ) https://rockstaraffirmations.bandcamp.com/track/world-famous-fashion-designer-best-fashion-designer-in-the-world-super-charged-affirmations The theory (we believe it is much more than just a theory!) is that when you first start saying your positive affirmations, they may not be true, but with repetition they sink into your subconscious mind, you really start to believe them, and eventually they become your reality, they become a self fulfilling prophecy and actually become true. Over time they overwrite any limiting or negative beliefs you may have about yourself or about not being able to do something, and replace them with positive thoughts and beliefs which instill confidence, belief, positivity, ambition and much more. As you listen to these affirmations, you will find yourself feeling more positive than before the video began. CAUTION: DO NOT LISTEN IF YOU HAVE HAD SEIZURES OR EPILEPSY. Ritu Beri Fashion Designer | 7 Rules for Success [Interview]

10:16
Ritu Beri is one of the TOP Bollywood fashion designers in India. Ritu Beri has accomplished what most designers dream of and we bring you her: 7 Rules to Success for Fashion Designers: #1 Take Tough Challenges #2 Be Persistent #3 Compete with yourself, do your best work #4 Be Scared of being #1 #5 Break Rules: Set your own trends #6 Find Inspiration everywhere #7 Discover What Fires You Transcript: 00:11 So Ritu Beri used to, and I love doing it, even today, I used to take the toughest challenge and I'd say, okay, now I'm going to do a fashion show. When I launched myself as a designer, designers used to do a double designers shows in the sense that would be two designers would be presenting, you know, in a banquet hall, and it was all very organized. So I decided that I'm going to launch myself as a designer and I'm going to not do it with anybody else. I'm going to do a solo show. So all the headaches were on me and then I have challenged myself and I said, I'm not going to do it in a banquet hall. I'm going to do it at the Moody Gardens. Because as a kid I used to walk at the Moody Gardens and this beautiful monument. And I used to always go there and be mesmerized. 00:56 So I decided this is going to be the venue of my shoe. And to add to that, I say, I'm not going to use recorded music. I'm going to get real musicians. Because what I named my collection was a retrospective of the Indian fashion industry, so I went through ancient India, medieval India to modern India, and I went and approach to start, um, to the ECON. Soccer was in hurry, preset you. I got all of them to agree to do the music life for me. And then I was a little designer brand new out of the fashion institution, not knowing what I was doing, but I was presenting my collection at the garden. So I went through the necessary permissions. But the system is duff. So, um, apparently ludy gardens comes under many, many different corporations, so it became a very political event and I had to get permissions and licenses, which apparently I was not aware of. 01:57 I got a few thinking that that was all that I needed. So it became a huge challenge and a huge, um, the press went mad, especially Indian Express. They had me on the cover of every new, every newspaper for the next five days, which was super fun. At one level I had, I had no budgets to pay for publicity. So then I was on the front page and everybody was saying, who is this with dewberry, you know, we've never heard of barry and I became a household name with my very first show. So I really don't take any, any challenge as a problem. It's, there's no such thing as an impossible situation. And I think it's fun to experiment. It's fun to, you know, pave your own path and do something new. Or 02:47 when I was 02:47 in design school lives to go to the library and all I was looking for because I used to enjoy embroideries and I was inspired by embroideries. All I looked for books and Roswell, Assad and weren't many books, but you know, they used to have these uh, design magazines and they'd be a mention of embroidery by Francois lasage. So I've, I've went to London and I looked for books in libraries, but there was very little that I really found, and this was this strange, uh, but I think it was destined. I went to Paris, I think this was [inaudible] 93 or 92. And I was sitting with a very, very important person from Cartier in Paris and she said, is there anybody in the fashion business that you would like to meet? And the only name that completely lit up. And she says, she laughed at me and she said, you are you asking for the moon 03:42 He meets nobody. But, uh, she said, I'll give you his phone number and if you get somewhere, it's completely all luck. All I did for the next four days in Paris was go to a booth, make a goal to a for go have a coffee, go back to the booth. I did this. I think I must have made about 30 calls to him. And, uh, I didn't speak French and the secretary would pick up and she would just speak in French. I had no way to get to him. Finally, I tried really hard and I said to you, would you, do you know somebody who speaks English in the office? 05:04 So all these number ones that everybody was trying to say, I was the first here and number one here. And I like to, um, my competition is only with myself and I, I really mean that because since I began it, Dilla was in junior school, it was about my report card and I had to be the first in class, but when I hit senior school it all changed for me because, um, I was lost and I think I started getting creative and creative people are a bit mad and they don't see everything so rationally. But this Russian artist is putting them side by side in her series “Fashion & Nature”. Part of her “1 + 1” project, it juxtaposes dresses straight from the walkway with grand vistas of nature. And while the designers’ inspiration is largely unknown, the resemblance is uncanny. A sort of macro level camouflage meant for giants, if you will. Liliya Hudyakova works with photo-composition. “1 + 1″ is the over-arching theme of her works, comparing people to stuff ranging from space to flowers. Her “Fashion And [Word]” series is probably the biggest, doing such interesting comparisons like Beyonce’s dress and king Ludwig’s bedroom in Linderhoff Castle, Bavaria. And here’s people think themselves smart for comparing Rihanna’s dress with an omelet. More info: Instagram | Facebook | Behance | Tumblr (h/t: boredpanda)

Even for her D-day, she chose none other than Ritu Kumar for her wedding outfits. Apart from Kumar, Dia also has a penchant for creations by Anita Dongre. 6. Sonakshi Sinha and Anita Dongre The epitome of Indian beauty, daughter of Shotgun, Sonakshi hardly goes for ensembles with heavy drapes. If at all she opts for them, it has to be from her favourite designer Anita Dongre. When it is about experimenting with hues, Sonakshi is a frontrunner in this regard. She was seen doing so in the wedding of her brother and at the glitzy reception of Tulsi Kumar. Both the times, her clothes were by Anita Dongre. 7. Top 14 Fashion Designer Interview Questions and Answers

Fashion designers create original clothing, accessories, and footwear. They sketch designs, select fabrics and patterns, and give instructions on how to make the products they designed. Duties Fashion designers typically do the following: Study fashion trends and anticipate designs that will appeal to consumers Decide on a theme for a collection Use computer-aided design programs (CAD) to create designs Visit manufacturers or trade shows to get fabric samples Select fabrics, embellishments, colors, or style for each garment or accessory Work with other designers or team members to create a prototype design Present design ideas to the creative director or showcase them in fashion or trade shows Market designs to clothing retailers or directly to consumers Oversee the final production of their designs Larger apparel companies typically employ a team of designers headed by a creative designer. Some fashion designers specialize in clothing, footwear, or accessory design, but others create designs in all three fashion categories. For some fashion designers, the first step in creating a new design is researching current fashion and making predictions of future trends, using trend reports published by fashion industry trade groups. Other fashion designers create collections from inspirations they get from their regular surroundings, from the cultures they have experienced and places they have visited, or from various art media that inspire them. After they have an initial idea, fashion designers try out various fabrics and produce a prototype, often with less expensive material than will be used in the final product. They work with models to see how the design will look and adjust the designs as needed. Although most designers first sketch their designs by hand, many now also sketch their ideas digitally with computer-aided design (CAD) programs. CAD allows designers to see their work on virtual models. They can try out different colors, design, and shapes while making adjustments more easily than they can when working with real fabric on real people. The designers produce samples with the actual materials that will be used in manufacturing. Samples that get good responses from editors or trade and fashion shows are then manufactured and sold to consumers. Although the design process may vary by specialty, in general it takes 6 months from initial design concept to final production, when either the spring or fall collection is released. Some companies may release new designs as frequently as every month, in addition to releases during the spring and fall. The Internet and e-commerce allow fashion designers to offer their products outside of the traditional brick-and-mortar stores. Instead they can ship directly to the consumer, without having to invest in a physical shop to showcase their products lines. The following are examples of types of fashion designers: Clothing designers create and help produce men's, women's, and children's apparel, including casual wear, suits, sportswear, evening wear, outerwear, maternity, and intimate apparel. Footwear designers create and help produce different styles of shoes and boots. As new materials become available, such as lightweight synthetic materials used in shoe soles, footwear designers produce new designs that combine comfort, form, and function. Accessory designers design and produce items such as handbags, suitcases, belts, scarves, hats, hosiery, and eyewear. Costume designers design costumes for the performing arts and for motion picture and television productions. They research the styles worn during the period in which the performance takes place, or they work with directors to select and create appropriate attire. They also must stay within the costume budget for the particular production.
