My name is Shane Paul Neil from singles Multisport, and I'll be discussing what's best for sprinters: toe striking, mid-foot striking, or heel striking. Sprinters almost exclusively run on their toes for a myriad of reasons, one being that it's the easiest way to make sure that you don't decelerate. Mid-foot striking or heel striking during a sprint will generally cause you to be slower overall. Mid-foot striking is generally better for somebody who's running the 800 meters or something a little bit longer. The ability to stay on your toes for that length of time can cause a lot of discomfort in your calves and your legs overall. Heel striking tends to come more into play for 5K and up, but everybody's a little bit different in their methodology and what they can and can't do. Mid-foot strikers generally land on the front half of their foot as opposed to just their toe, maybe from halfway to the arch to the front. The mid-foot strike is actually a nice marriage between the toe striker and the heel striker. It provides a slightly bigger platform for more comfort while running while not giving the stop motion that a heel striker might experience. A heel striker will do just that. They will land with their heel first. While heel striking is less common in faster races, novices and people running longer distances will tend to do more heel striking overall. A heel striker generally uses their entire foot during the course of a race. They'll land on their heel first, roll through the mid-foot, and lift off with the toe. There are no specific benefits to heel striking, outside of general comfort for a novice or a slower runner. So to answer the question, in the end toe striking is ultimately going to be best for sprinters.

6 Exercises to Kill Chronic Knee, Foot or Hip Pain
If you, just like 15 to 25 percent of people in the US, suffer from chronic knee pain, or just get tired sore feet from constantly being on the go, pay attention to these 6 exercises to cure chronic knee, foot or hip pain. You don’t need an expensive treatment if you regularly perform the simple workout at home. Knees are the second largest source of recurrent pain, and once you add in the feet and hips, it turns out that the legs can cause big problems for a lot of people. Simple tip-toeing, besides strengthening your calves, helps improve your balance by reducing the area in contact with the ground, which makes keeping your balance quite a challenge. It strengthens your glutes and core muscles, improves your posture while simultaneously relieving back pain, increases the flexibility of your ankles, stretches the muscles around your shins, which are an otherwise difficult muscle group to target. Heel raises, ankle circles, resistance training and toe games are all effective exercises for relieving pain in different parts of your legs. Try to do rolling foot massage on a daily basis and do as many reps as you want or have time for. It gives the bottom of your foot a nice stretch and prevents foot-related injuries in the long run. Music: Diamond Ortiz - Inevitable https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS Exercise #1. Heel raises 1:01 Exercise #2. Tip-toeing 3:22 Exercise #3. Ankle circles 4:34 Exercise #4. Resistance training 5:47 Exercise #5. Toe games 7:42 Exercise #6. Rolling foot massage 9:24 Bonus 10:04 SUMMARY -You’ll need to grab a chair for this exercise. Stand behind it and use the back of the chair to support yourself. This exercise helps strengthen your ankles and works the muscles around the knee. -Simply tip-toe around your house kind of quickly. This will strengthen your calves and give a little workout to your toes and the balls of your feet. Aim to do this exercise regularly for 5 to 15 minutes or until you get tired. -This exercise helps loosen up the tendons and muscles in your legs and ankles. It’ll improve your flexibility, range of motion, and overall comfort while walking or standing. -Resistance training targets the muscles in your calves and inner and outer thighs, not only toning but also strengthening them. -Toe games is an important exercise because it strengthens the tiny muscles in your toes and feet. They tend to be underdeveloped, which can be a big problem since they support your arches, keep your toes properly aligned, and even contribute to balance. -Rolling foot massage works the muscles in the heels and balls of your feet. It’s also a nice relaxing massage for your arches. -If your feet are killing you after a long day, use one thumb to put pressure on the spot between your big toe and pointer toe and use the other thumb to press the point between your ring toe and pinky toe. Gently massage these spots for up to 15 minutes for easy and quick relaxation. This time around we're going to show you how to do the Heel Toe. This dance just basically goes by the name. It's called the Heel Toe so you know you're going to use a heel and a toe. Right? So we're going to start out taking our right foot and put that on the heel. The left foot, you can see over here, is going to be on the toe so I'm up like this. There you go, Heel Toe, that's the dance. No, there's more to it. So what you're going to do is; you're on your heel here and you're on your toe here, you're going to turn it to the side. Got it? So we started out facing the left side, which is your right, and then we turned to our right, which is your left. So we're going to take your right foot and put it on the heel. The left foot should be on the toe then turn to the right side. Then what you're going to do is jump it. So you're going to keep the same heel toe but now with the opposite feet. So now your left foot which is in the back is going to be on the heel and the right foot is going to be on the toe. So jump and switch it. There you go. Now, all you have to do is turn your body to the left side. Jump and switch it. Turn it to the right side. So basically what you have to remember is you have to always stay on your heel and your toe. Got it? Because then it's not the Heel Toe. Heel and toe the whole time right? So I'm going to take my right foot and I'm going to put it in the front on the heel. Pick up the back foot, which is the left one and that should be on the toe. Now turn. After you turn you always jump. So you're going to jump now. You switched it. You have one heel and one toe again. Then you're going to turn. Next thing you do is you jump it again. So much easier once you're bending your knees and you're down lower. It works out so much better. Got it? All right. So let's try this nice and slow. We're going to take our right foot and put it to the left side. And the right foot is on the heel. Left foot is on the toe. Then we turn. Jump. Switch. Turn. Jump. Switch. Turn. Jump. Switch. Turn. Jump. Switch. Turn. Got it? That's your Heel Toe slow. Now what if you want to do it fast? You should do it fast. This is what it looks like. We're going to start on this side. So, five, six, seven, eight, you go turn. Jump. Turn. Turn. Turn. Turn. Turn. Turn. Turn. That's your Heel Toe. Notice I'm bending my knees. We want to be down low to make this work our best. He just twists to the other side. Got it? Yes? Jump. Turn. Turn. Turn. Heel Toe. That's how you do it.

Forefoot Running is NOT Toe Running (slow motion of forefoot strike)
Forefoot running is often confused with toe running but, mechanically, they are two different foot strikes. Toe running is rare and is a great way to shred your calf muscles. Big Toe walk for better Gait and Mechanics
How to walk and leave your big toe and why. Learn how correct walking will strengthen your foot. Improve the mechanics of your foot ankle, knee and hip. Decrease ground impact forces, make you a more efficient runner and rehabilitate and strengthen your hips and lower back. Here is a simple guideline of what to think about whilst walking and running: Walking cues Long spine, lean gently forward until toes relax onto ground. Leave your heel on the ground until your body passes over hip. Leave your heel on the ground until you feel a gentle stretch in hip. Let your arms swing gently at your sides. Feet should adapt and conform to the ground. The aim of walking is to integrate your surroundings with your senses, sight, smell, sound and touch. You should be relaxed and aware of your surroundings. It is a great way to integrate thought and relax the nervous system. Walking is low impact and so the best time to wear flexible shoes with little or no cushioning to strengthen feet and make your feet and hips supple and strong or walk barefoot if the terrain is safe to do so. Walking Don’ts Don’t stride out or walk fast don’t try burn calories Don’t use your arms to generate speed or momentum Try not use rigid, structured or motion control shoes or shoes with a high heel to toe drop Running Cues: Long spine, gentle forward lean until toes relax onto ground but be centered Rule no 1: Always Control center of mass and be centered. Look Ahead Stay connected to the ground until you feel your stance leg push you forward “Let your foot drive your hip forward” Use your glutes to drive the world beneath you as if you were spinning the globe Allow your shoulders to counter rotate freely Drive your hips into extension Run off the front of your foot, your forefoot should feel like a hinge. Relax your foot off the ground (imagine pulling your foot out of a gumboot behind you, you have to relax the ankle and soften the foot) Relax and feel connected and efficient Mistakes made at the core or in controlling your center of mass cannot be corrected at the periphery, so always control center of mass and generate power and movement from the hips. Supple and adaptable feet require no thought in order to land and adapt to the ground. Relaxing the foot as it leaves the ground will in turn relax the foot striking the ground and allow it to be supple and adaptive. Relaxing the feet will soften the hips and allow you to access them as springs. Running don’ts Do not increase cadence or decrease ground contact time by prematurely lifting feet off the ground Don’t lean Don’t pull back or pull up Do not consciously use the hamstrings for propulsion or force production don’t tighten core or restrict breathing don’t control pelvis so much that hips cannot move independently Don’t use arms to generate speed or power (unless sprinting) Don’t try control foot strike -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Preamble to Fix My Funky Feet" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XM4Upv5bVu4 A series on how to understand athletes feet. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Heel Strike vs Running on the Toes (And Shoes That Help or Hinder)
http://LegendaryStrength.com - What's the best way to run? Should you run on your heels or toes? What about various shoes and their effect on the way you run? Our feet are designed in a way which makes it possible to run, walk or just support our weight. There was actually a study done by military on whether or not specially designed shoes could help prevent injuries. They also had a control group wearing regular shoes and it turns out that there was almost no difference in the amount of injuries between two groups. Moreover, there was a podiatrist (foot specialist) who claimed that it's not possible to have a natural human gait while wearing any type of shoes. Essentially, we are designed to be barefoot despite the fact that's not always possible nowadays. In addition to beneficial grounding aspects I've talked about earlier, wearing shoes throws off our body's natural weight distribution. This is even more pronounced and damaging by running, since the stress on our bodies is even higher in that case. This is especially true for regular marathon runners, who often end up in pain and sustain injuries. For example, if you are landing on your heels with every step you take, that stress usually ends up in your knees or even lower back. Almost all running shoes on the market come with a thick heel, which actually promotes heel striking as you won't feel the stress while you run. However, you'll definitely feel it overtime in other parts of your body as mentioned above. Generally, the bigger the heel is, the bigger the damage will be. Even flat shoes have a bit of a heel, so they are still not good enough for running. When I do run, I wear Vibrams and even though they do have a bit of heel padding, they are perfect for getting used to bear foot running, since something like that truly requires some getting used to, especially if you're overweight or have never tried it before. As most of us spent our whole lives in shoes, our feet aren't going to like running and walking barefoot at first, so we have to do it gradually. Having said that, the best place to start is to just walk barefoot. It might be a bit uncomfortable until your feet toughen up a bit, but there's no way around it. Although some people claim differently, you actually still can run in a bad manner and end up heel striking while wearing Vibrams. Moreover, if you put an effort to deliberately stay on your toes, wearing any type of shoes, you'll be able to prevent the impact just by the sheer fact that the arch of the foot is designed to absorb that energy; ultimately stopping the stress on your knees and lower back. I'd say the most important thing is to minimize heel striking while running and in case you need to strike with your heels on longer distances, try to reduce the mileage instead. Work on your technique and try to get involved in barefoot running, depending on your goals. For example, my brother enjoy marathons and he ran them barefoot, but that's something you can achieve gradually and definitely not a thing to start with. Check out links below for more information on this topic. http://legendarystrength.com/podcast-barefoot-running-with-zane-christopher/ http://legendarystrength.com/podcast-barefoot-running-technique-part-2/ http://legendarystrength.com/6-mile-barefoot-run/ http://legendarystrength.com/vibram-five-finger-shoes-review/

Heel and Toe Walk
Three parts to the exercise. First, lift your toes off the floor and walk on your heels. Try to keep your toes as far from the floor as possible and walk across the room. Second, Rise up on your toes and walk. Try to stay as high on your toes as possible and walk across the room. Third, walk across a room, exaggerating ankle motion by first touching your heel to the ground with your toes lifted high, then going on your toes at the end of that step.

Shoes and Running Technique
Running Pain in your feet? Legs? Calves? Ouchies after you jog? Take a look at what your feet are doing when you run. A great way to do this is to set up an iPhone to record you and run by it in multiple directions. Analyze what your body and feet are doing. What part of your foot is striking the ground first? Your heel? Your toe? Ideally you want a forefoot strike. That will decrease the impact on your joints compared to a heel strike. Listen to the difference in sound when you heel strike versus mid foot strike. It is easy to hear how much more impact there is with a heel strike. We suggest running in barefoot shoes. This allows you to feel what your feet are doing. You will feel the impact of a heel strike much more in barefoot shoes and it becomes natural to stop heel striking when wearing them. We all wear Vivo Barefoot shoes and have recently been trying some new barefoot running sandals called Earth Runners. If you are wearing positive heel shoes, please transition to barefoot shoes gradually. It will take your body time to adjust to this change in stimuli. Begin by trying some zero drop shoes with padding and then transition to barefoot shoes. Or introduce the barefoot shoes in small time increments throughout your day. Go barefoot in your home.

Most tutorials for this move all teach it the same way and since some people learn differently, I decided to fill in the gap and teach it a bit differently. Yet again, another impromptu recording and the music in the place was so loud I decided to do a voiceover instead. Production value will improve as time goes on but for now, thanks for rockin' with me on my fledgling channel. Peroneal release: relieve outer heel pain, flat feet, soleus strain, sciatica + more
Join my email community and get exclusive trainings via email: www.mobilitymastery.com/free-resources Join my Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/149019862373956/ If you’re on your feet a lot, whether that’s standing, walking or running (isn’t this everyone!?) then this technique will benefit you. But if you have ANY of the following please try this and comment below the video with your results, because you should get some instant relief: Outer heel pain (plantar fasciitis) Outer ankle pain or ankle strains Achilles strains/pain that's mostly on the outside Achilles tendonitis Shin splints Compartment syndrome Tendonitis on the tops of your feet (extensor tendonitis) Flat feet or fallen arches Sciatica - DEFINITELY try this if you have sciatica, especially if you've already tried other areas and you're still in pain...this is a surprising culprit Lateral (outside) knee pain Inner calf or soleus strains or "pulled" soleus muscle Neuropathy that is caused by restriction and lack of blood flow Cold feet that are related to restriction and lack of blood flow Please keep in mind that to FULLY address any of the above, this technique should be used in combination with other techniques that help you MAP your entire fascial system to find the root cause of pain (or, see a professional that can help you find the root cause). IF YOU’RE A RUNNER: Using this technique could help you run smoother and feel faster even if you have no pain, by optimizing the fascia in a key area of stabilization (your lateral myo-fascial line). Even if you’re NOT in pain, try this! You may just feel lighter, stand taller and walk more fluidly as a result. Comment below with your results and inspire someone else to take care of their body and feel better.

Tyler April 2015, August 2016, August 2017 feet transformation
This video shows the progression of my physical transition to natural footwear and bare feet. In the first picture, dated April 2015, I had already been wearing Correct Toes and engaged in active postural therapy for 6 months. How did I do it? A lot of: 1) wearing Correct Toes during ~100% of weight bearing hours 2) after 1.5 years, a switch to minimal sandals 3) natural movement all the time (http://www.nutritiousmovement.com) 4) adopting the Born to Run running technique (http://www.borntorun.com) 5) daily physical therapy with tools (Yoga Tune Up, The Stick, The Foot Log) 6) a lot of yoga / tai chi / dynamic stretching 7) daily trail running (rough surface textures) My transition has been aided by: http://www.NWFootAnkle.com – Dr. Ray McClanahan, podiatrist and inventor of Correct Toes http://www.CorrectToes.com – toe spreaders http://www.injinji.com – toe socks http://www.lemsshoes.com – my first natural shaped footwear http://www.vivobarefoot.com – many styles of great footwear options http://www.altrarunning.com – trail running shoes http://www.shammasandals.com – running sandals http://www.vibramfivefingers.com – eponymous Vibram five fingers http://www.yogatuneup.com – amazing accupressure balls I use daily http://www.footlog.com – textured foot roller I use daily http://www.thestick.com – leg and body massage tool http://www.nutritiousmovement.com – Katy Bowman knows movement and how to use it for health, happiness, and therapy http://www.borntorun.com – running technique I use taught by Lee Saxby http://www.naturalrunningcenter.com – running resource organized by Dr. Mark Cucuzzella http://www.venndesign.com – active sitting chairs I use at a desk

Running Technique Error: Toe-off
There is a common misunderstanding about the function of toes in running (article http://bit.ly/role-of-toes-in-running). Their only purpose in running consists of maintaining balance/stabilization and perception of support. Pushing off actively with your toes leads to plantar faciitis (http://bit.ly/how-to-prevent-plantar-fasciitis). Dr. Romanov goes over the basics to help you avoid this painful injury and expend less energy! Pick Up Your Feet To Run Faster - Running Technique - The Merisoiu Technique Institute
Your legs are like pendulums. A long pendulum will move slower, a shorter one will move faster. So stop shuffling your legs, dragging them behind you and pick them up and bend your knee. ____________________________________ Alexandra Merisoiu, The Body Engineer, is the Founder of The Merisoiu Technique - Institute Of Health And Human Movement and Dracula’s Retreat. She is also a qualified Low Back Pain Management and Prevention Exercise and REPS registered instructor.
