Hollywood: Chronicle of History | Empire

47:34
"Entertainment is part of our American diplomacy," US President Barack Obama told a crowd last year at a DreamWorks Animation facility. In 2013, it was the Hollywood production Iron Man 3 that made the biggest splash globally, bringing in over $1bn at the box office. In fact, the top 500 grossing films of all time are Hollywood productions. Hollywood has increasingly made huge inroads into other countries’ box office markets with its blockbusters and studio investments. While countries like China limit the number of foreign films that can be shown at theatres annually, and other countries rely on government assistance to buoy local industries and counter Hollywood’s influence, the US still finds a way to woo non-American audiences. But at a time when Hollywood’s global reach has never been greater, and as it rakes in millions of dollars each year, what does the dominance of the US entertainment industry say about its power to shape perceptions about society, culture and history? And does this economic and diplomatic might make Hollywood a chronicle of American power? Empire heads to California to speak to leading directors, producers, film critics and cinema historians to decipher how Hollywood interacts with and affects the rest of the world. We examine how Hollywood films tackle reality and shape historical events, often walking a tightrope between fact and fiction, and ask whether it is for the better or the worse. And we analyse how, if American cinema is considered a diplomatic tool, what it communicates to the rest of the world about the US and how it wields power. We speak to industry insiders and learn what strategic commercial and cultural considerations are being made in Hollywood today. We seek views from key players in Bollywood, another powerful industry, and speak to filmmakers in France about the state of French cinema and how it is perceived vis-a-vis the cultural invasion or dominance of American films. - Subscribe to our channel http://bit.ly/AJSubscribe - Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/AJEnglish - Find us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera - Check out our website:http://www.aljazeera.com/

25 Intriguing Facts About Hollywood History

05:57
Hollywood: The land of glitz, glamour, and celebrities. Not many people will disagree that much of popular culture has been influenced (and continues to be influenced) by Hollywood history and its films (in both good and bad ways). In many instances, Hollywood has educated the younger generation and retold stories in colorful cinematic fashion that were either forgotten or only discussed in university-level history or literature courses, with 300 and the Battle of Thermopylae between the Persians and the Greeks being a recent major example. However, the fact that Hollywood and its movie releases clearly have a significant impact on billions of people across the globe isn’t always a good thing; quite often Hollywood has a negative influence on modern thought and culture. Many stereotypes and misconceptions about certain population groups, countries, and cultures have been disseminated by Hollywood films to the point where people tend to believe they are true. Also, movies are often used as political propaganda with many—especially during the Cold War—being totally inaccurate with a clear desire and objective to mislead the masses about certain ideas and actions. We could write a whole book about the pros and cons, the positives and negatives, of the film industry’s impact on society and culture, but for now we’ll just present you with 25 Intriguing Facts About Hollywood History that will enlighten you about your favorite movie industry 25 Intriguing Facts About Hollywood History | List25 Originally, “movies” did not refer to films, but rather to the people who produced them. It was widely used with great scorn by early Hollywood locals who disliked the “invading” Easterners. The first film made in Hollywood was D. W. Griffith’s In Old California (1910), a melodrama about a Spanish woman who has an illegitimate son with a man who later becomes governor of California. It was shot in two days. When Horace and Daeida Wilcox founded Hollywood in 1887, they hoped it would become a religious community. As prohibitionists, they banned liquor and offered free land to anyone interested in constructing a church in the area. During the “chest bursting” scene in Alien, director Ridley Scott had the actors unexpectedly showered with actual entrails purchased at a butcher shop so that their horrific screams would sound truly real and natural. Thomas Edison’s Black Maria, a frame building covered in black roofing paper built at Edison Laboratories in New Jersey, was the first film studio. It cost $637.67 to construct in 1893. The largest indoor set was the UFO landing site created for Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The largest makeup budget was $1 million for Planet of the Apes (1968), which was nearly seventeen percent of the film’s total production cost. Twenty-two million bees were employed by Irwin Allen in The Swarm, the largest number of living creatures used in a Hollywood movie. The most fatalities ever to occur during a film’s production happened while shooting 1931’s Viking. Twenty-seven people died, including the director and cinematographer, when a ship they were filming from exploded in the ice off the coast of Newfoundland. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) was the most expensive black-and-white movie ever made. Production costs totaled $7.5 million, due mainly to the salaries of its stars, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. And more... Aaliyah’s Biopic Casting vs Hollywood's Whitewashing of African History

12:54
Purpose of this video is to stress that the same energy used to condemn and criticize Aaliyah’s biopic on Lifetime, let’s use that same energy to condemn, boycott and criticize the falsification of our history via Hollywood and mainstream motion pictures. We also need to challenge our black independent film makers to correct these wrongs and produce more positive material at the same time we need to support the ones that do. The most ironic thing on the subject matter is Aaliyah played the character of an Egyptian inspired Vampire being described as pure evil and nothing serious about Egypt or emphasis that she was an Egyptian. Another issue with Hollywood's depictions of Egypt. If it is something serious about Egypt, the cast is all white but they used a Black character for something pure evil. Or better yet even when they use all white casting, they still portray Egyptian culture inaccurately as something evil or supernatural. Check out the trailer of Aaliyah's character in the Queen of the Damned: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zLPFqZlTv94 Like our FaceBook Page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sankofa-Revival-Project-SRP/757257644296881?ref_type=bookmark Narrated by Brother J and his own conclusions and thoughts from his research. North Hollywood Bank Robbery Shootout of 1997

05:19
The North Hollywood shootout was a confrontation between two heavily armed and armored bank robbers, Larry Phillips Jr. and Emil Mătăsăreanu, and members of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) in the North Hollywood district of Los Angeles, California on February 28, 1997. Both perpetrators were killed, twelve police officers and eight civilians were injured, and numerous vehicles and other property were damaged or destroyed by the nearly 2,000 rounds of ammunition fired by the robbers and police. So different places are giving me different numbers on the people wounded. It was between 18 and 20. REVIEW: 'Scotty And The Secret History Of Hollywood' Documentary

10:11
Christy Lemire and Alonso Duralde rate and review 'Scotty And The Secret History Of Hollywood', a documentary chronicling the life of a "procurer" of scandalous entertainment to the rich and famous of Old Hollywood. Let us know if you'll be seeing this doc in theaters in the comments below! 'Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood' starring Scotty Bowers, Lois Bowers, Stephen Fry, directed by Matt Tyrnauer and reviewed by What the Flick?! This clip is brought to you in partnership with http://atomtickets.com. Use code WTF5 for $5 off your first purchase! Read what other critics had to say: https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/scotty_and_the_secret_history_of_hollywood "Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood is the deliciously scandalous story of Scotty Bowers, a handsome ex-Marine who landed in Hollywood after the Second World War and became confidante, aide de camp and lover to many of Hollywood's greatest male--and female-stars. In the 1940s and '50s, he ran a gas station in the shadow of the studio lots where he would connect his band of friends from the military with those who had to hide their true sexual identities from the public. An unsung Hollywood legend, Bowers would cater to the sexual appetites of celebrities - straight, gay and omnivorous - for decades. In 2012, he finally spilled his secrets in the bestselling memoir "Full Service," which revealed a dramatic counter-narrative on Hollywood's Golden Age.
