More than one fifth of the total males and more than one fourth of the total American females are suffering from Herpes today, among which over 85% of the cases are of Genital Herpes alone. The more strange fact is that most of such people are not even aware what they are suffering from. Herpes is actually a ridiculous skin disease which can become the most devastating skin infection for the sufferer. Herpes is a disease which results in skin infections in the form of small blisters in groups, sometimes referred to as Cold Sores or Fever Blisters. These infections may be on or around the face or even at the genitals too. Based on the body part infected, Herpes is broadly categorized into two types, namely Oral Herpes and Genital Herpes. As the name suggests, Oral Herpes is the type of Herpes when the infections are on the face or mouth. These infections are found in the form of groups of small blisters on even the cheeks, lips, gums, tongue; chin, in or around the eyes, on the neck and sometimes on the elbows too. While in case of Genital Herpes, the similar infections are on or around the private parts, in the groin, on the buttocks and sometimes enemy in the opening of the anus too. Herpes is caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus, which is of two types, namely Herpes Simplex Virus type-1 and Herpes Simplex Virus type-2. HSV-1 (Herpes Simplex Virus type-1) is mainly responsible for the most of the cases of Oral Herpes, while HSV-2 (Herpes Simplex Virus type-2) causes the most of the cases of Genital Herpes. But this statement is not always true, as both the types of HSV can cause both the types of Herpes. The symptoms of Herpes are usually mistaken with the symptoms of other bacterial and fungal infections. The most common symptoms of Herpes include the Sores, which occur on the infected body parts and are usually red, itchy, tingling and burning. Before these blisters start appearing, the skin of the infected parts starts itching or burning for one or two days. After these sores come in shape, they become even more painful, and fluid-filled. These blisters may sometimes break and open and hence, the fluid they contain comes out and forms a crust. These sores are noticed for the first time after two to twenty days from the day of the contact with the infected person. In case of Oral Herpes, these blisters may appear in grous on the lips, mouth, cheeks, face or sometimes on the tongue and neck too. While in case of Genital Herpes, these sores usually occur on the penis, vagina, buttocks, or even at the anus too. These symptoms can actually occur anywhere on the skin. Other Herpes symptoms include severe fever, itching and burning pains on these sores or blisters, swelling in the lymph nodes in the neck or in the groin too. Other common symptoms include problem in urination (especially in women), and the burning pain while urinating. Herpes Keratitis (herpes in eyes) is also a great symptom of Herpes. In this case, HSV can spread in one or even both the eyes. In this case, person suffers from pain in eye, little sensitivity, fluid discharge from eye, and sometimes grit in the eyes. Herpes Keratitis may even result into scarring, if not treated on time. In this case, the person can get cloudy vision or even can lose the vision too. Once these symptoms occur, they sustain for 2 to 3 weeks in case of Oral Herpes, while for 2 to 5 weeks in case of Genital Herpes. If you have these symptoms, you may have Herpes. Herpes is actually an incurable disease as HSV makes a permanent shelter in the immune system of the infected person, once it enters the body.
