One friend says: “No, you clearly need to take our your taplands - look at your curve, you’re too aggressive for them!”, while another says: “You need to keep those in to stay flexible and reach your high drops!” Who’s right in this situation? How would it be different if you were playing at a limited FNM with sealed and draft? Mana curving and land base are both important parts of deckbuilding, and we’ll be covering them today in our second episode of Tolarian Tutor. Though we went over mana curve a bit in our first lesson, we’ll be taking a deeper dive this time and explore the intricacies of how curving and land base composition change in both limited and constructed formats. What does the term Mana Curve refer to? If we were to take a Magic deck and group the spells by converted mana cost from left to right, we can clearly see that we’re creating a graph of our deck to see how many low, middle and high drop cards we have. Most decks will have the majority of its cards in the center, with a few cards to the left that can be played during our first few turns, and not too many to the right that might clog up our hand for the majority of the game. This creates a bell curve, which is the origin of the term Mana Curve. You want a steady mana curve so that you can actually play Magic and cast spells every turn, curving out like we discussed during our last session. It’s one of the reasons why a lot of players don’t play cards like Pull From Tomorrow, because it takes 6 mana to cast and most players should be spending that mana doing something more relevant to the battlefield. How important is having a mana curve that centers on 3 to 4 drops? The answer to this question varies from format to format, set to set and deck to deck. Again, you’ll need to keep all of these things in mind when you build your deck and design its strategy. Let’s focus on some recent limited sets. In more Aggressive formats like Amonkhet draft, your curve will probably peak earlier at around the 2-3 drop slots. Usually, a 2/2 for 2 is just considered a vanilla creature, but here a card like Watchers of the Dead is more relevant given the aggressiveness of this format. An example of a slower format would be in Modern Masters 2017, where your curve rested around the 3 to 4 drop range with creatures like Dinrova Horror at the top. What are some of the signals to look out for in a set when figuring out how to optimize my mana curve? This is a slightly more difficult question, but the easiest way to determine how aggressive or slow a format is would be to take a look at how good its mechanics are at attacking. Let’s take Amonkhet for example. With Amonkhet, Exert is a bad mechanic for blocking, but it’s very good at Attacking. So we get a bit of a hint there that we need to be more aggressive. In Gatecrash, Battalion was a mechanic that incentivized attacking with at least one or more creatures. That too should be a clue that it is a more aggressive format. If it’s a slower format, you’ll see more efficient, low costed removal that takes care of lower drop creatures. As a result, 3-4 drops become much more important and have a bigger impact on the board state. Again looking at Modern Masters 2017, we saw the return of Lightning Bolt and Path to Exile, which made creatures like Mistmeadow Witch and Dinrova Horror more playable and able to hold their own on the battlefield. Building a mana curve and land base that are both optimized and consistent is a key part of becoming a great Magic player. Studying from others and rigorous testing are both great ways to help you improve your skills, and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. What is EDH / Commander: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2n6rIzIA6A How To Build Your First Commander Deck: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gbphr57jysI How To Choose Your Commander: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbSYOznJygQ Building a Commander deck is a complex construction. Perhaps most difficult of all is the proper proportions of your Commander deck’s mana base. Knowing the ratio of lands to spells is often not enough. Within your deck’s lands, how many should be fetchlands, how many should be filter lands, shock lands, basic lands? This video will guide you through the process of building a five color Commander manabase, with emphasis on land ratios for each land types. It will offer both a budget and optimal build for your deck. If you have not already seen my videos explaining what the commander format is, how to construct your first commander deck, or how to choose your commander, you may do so here, here, and here. Please Note: This video is meant both as a guide for players who do not know where to begin building their mana base, or for players having difficulty with their mana base. It is not meant as the final and only word on the subject, quite the opposite! Commander is a format with a multitude of options. This video is simply meant to help those who need it, not to dictate hard or absolute rules. The Basics Building a five color commander mana base requires you to understand the average CMC, or converted mana cost of your deck. On average, does your deck have spells with a high CMC, or a low CMC? This will affect many important factors. If you deck has mostly spells that require a high converted mana cost, such as a 5 color control deck, you should focus on 3 primary colors and consider the remaining 2 “splash” colors. The best way to proceed for such a deck would in fact be to begin with our guide for a tri-color deck, but to add 1 basic land outside those 3 colors that can be fetched, as well as to include the five color lands we will discuss later in this video. If your deck has a low to medium average converted mana cost, then this guide is for you. Especially for decks such as Slivers which has a multitude of low cmc creatures, or Scion where getting the general out fast and reliably is the primary goal, your manabase must be built to achieve five color access quickly! But how? Generally speaking, non pun intended, the ratio of lands to spells is 38+ Lands, 8+ Accelerants, for a total average of 46 mana sources. As always, your deck, and its unique mana curve will affect this formula. You very easily could need to run 40 lands instead of 38 in a five color commander deck, and if you find even the slightest trouble playing your five color mana base, the first fix I would recommend trying is increasing to 40 lands. But this video will work within the template of 38 lands, and 8 accelerants, and you the playing and commander constructor will need to test and adjust if necessary. So of those 38 lands, in a five color commander deck, what does the ratio look like? How to build a Magic deck 101: Red/Black

50:19
This video is a "brief" guide for building a deck in Magic the Gathering. This is NOT a video on building the best B/R deck in the Duels game or me telling you what you should do. This is a generalization in which elements can be extrapolated from to extend to multiple other forms and colors of Magic. This is a tool to jump start new players to get better, and review for regular players. Both are the main audience of Magic Duels Origins / Zendikar Some of the important elements we discuss in this video (Not in order) Essentially, these concepts below are bullet points in which every good deck must take serious consideration with when building. What is a good card? Synergy. Curve Mana Base Mana Source Availability Paths to win (Using multiple) Winning without primary cards Value/Quality How do I fare against Aggro? Focus vs Balance Magic decks are a constant see-saw spectrum of numerous variables and it is impossible to craft the perfect solution. Similar to Chess there is no best move, there is no right way 100% of the time. You have to play the percentages, predict the future plays of your opponent and even yourself and make the best on-the-fly judgement call while on the clock that you can. It IS hard. Even playing RDW takes skill. Table on mana sources: http://oi59.tinypic.com/14t7u5w.jpg What this is attempting to show is how many lands in your deck will equate to the percent to draw them by a certain turn. It's a very old table, at the time 20 land in 60 cards was standard...whereas now it's 24. So what you'd really like to be able to do is NEVER miss that 5-drop on turn 5, with 20 land you're looking at a 76% chance on average to get there, which is already assuming you hit it on all 4 previous turns. You miss one turn of land drops you're behind the REST of the game in your power creep vs the opponent. If all your cards cost 3 or less, you can potentially afford to sit at 21 lands and have a consistent availability to draw 3 of them in 10 cards (By turn 3 you've seen 10 cards, 1/6 or 16% of your deck) Importantly: This does NOT take into account color variance. If you're playing a 2 color deck, you're going to have to find a balance of land that gets you the colors as you need it, as discussed when showcasing the double white mana cost aggro guys. I once used a BUG deck that greens sole purpose was Birds of Paradise, Rampant Growth, and Garruk, a total of 9 cards, while Blue and Black did all the real work. Despite this, I needed just as many green mana sources as I did blue or black because I NEEDED green on turn 1 or worst turn 2 in order to accelerate while assuming my bird/elf would die to removal. I'd even splash in Red from sideboard during games 2/3 against aggro and that really was hectic. Made it work though, lands that don't come in tapped are lifesavers! -- Also note: In addition, the most important part of decks is PLAYTESTING. You must play these cards in NUMEROUS games, draw each card in each situation to see if they really help or if you always wish it was something else. Find out what your weaknesses are. Test random cards from time to time as well. Even if you're happy with a deck, throw 1-2 cards out and try something else to see. Worst case scenario it sucks and you remove it. Possible scenario it's an unexpected play that may uniquely shape situations sometimes better or worse. Best case scenario you've improved. Not all decks will be good after they are made. Even good cards with decent combo concepts can still be bad decks. Don't feel bad if an idea didn't work. Don't try too hard to fix something that just doesn't work. If a deck isn't producing results over several adjustments and testing, delete it. The most important "too long didn't read" tips I can provide you: - Use enough land. 23-25 is good for 75% of decks. - Using aggro, do not over extend. Winning by 50 or winning by 1 is irrelevant. Just win. - Always assume your opponent is smarter than you and has threatening plays. The threat of a strong play is his most powerful tool. - When playing against control with counter spells: Err toward playing your 2nd best spells. As always, PLEASE give me your feedback. Let me know what else I can do, what else you want to see, and every question you may have! -------------- http://mythicspoiler.com/bfz/ -- VISUALS of new cards in the next set here! How to Build a Magic the Gathering Deck (beginners)

04:24
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/charalanahzard Twitter: https://twitter.com/charalanahzard COMPETITION ENDS ON THE 7th OF MARCH. Enormous thanks to Hasbro for the give-away opportunity, and the cards supplied in this video! So, this week I teach you guys (mostly beginners, though) how to make your first Magic the Gathering deck. This card game has existed for ages and I only got into it 2-3 years ago, but have had heaps of fun (mostly teaching others to play!). It's definitely a bit hard to get into since, from the outside, it seems quite complex. If you build a deck this way and then start playing with friends etc. you'll very quickly pick up how to play, what you need to change, what cards you like, what strategies you like, and what weaknesses your deck has. From the steps in this video, you really just need to test your stuff out and start buying more cards to get a FULLY SICK DECK YO! So hopefully this helps some people out :). Are your cards in dissaray? Many Magic: The Gathering players ask the question, "How should I store and organize my collection?" This is a question whose answer will vary depending on what kind of collection you have. For the purposes of this video, I'll be talking about organizing and storing larger, long-term collections. Please remember: this is meant as a guideline, and not an absolute rule. The precise nature of how you organize and store your cards will be personal to you and your needs. That’s because we’re adept at recognizing patterns, not just in how things look, but how they interact with one another. In Magic, we often see recurring themes and patterns in how certain decks play out, and how they interact not just with your opponent, but the board state as well. We call these archetypes, because we see them come up in almost every format again and again like an old friend, or in some cases, an old nemesis. By labeling these different deck archetypes, we can understand what a deck is trying to do just by hearing the name of it. If I say “Red Deck Wins”, you know this deck is focused on a Aggro strategy, has no Control elements, and uses cards like lightning bolt and goblin guide. It immediately tells you what the deck is trying to do, and how going about it. In this episode, we’ll be exploring the three primary types of deck archetypes we see in Magic: The Gathering: Aggro, Control and Combo. We’ll talk about their strengths, their weaknesses, and how to evaluate cards to build these archetypes in both Limited and Constructed. Which of these archetypes should I play? This depends on the format, and also on the timing. If you’re looking for a good win rate, the best time to play an Aggro strategy is usually right after a set comes out in Standard. Because the format is still being in some ways “figured out”, being proactive and focusing on just killing your opponent is an effective way of getting those early wins. Once a format becomes more defined, it’s easier to build a Control deck to beat what other people are doing, which is usually at the end before the next set is released, or before rotation. Combo is sprinkled throughout the lifespan of a format sometimes, when and if there is a good busted combo in a Control deck. If people are playing a lot of Aggro decks, then it’s a good time to do one of those Engine decks, as long as it’s fast and can kill by turn 5 if there isn’t interaction. But honestly, the real answer to this question is: any of them you want! What is amazing about Magic: the Gathering as a game is its flexibility. You can express yourself through gameplay in almost any way you might wish. I love my Modern Merfolk deck, and no matter how it’s doing in the meta, I’ll continue to play it, regardless of what other people think. For you that might be your Cat tribal Standard deck, your Burn deck, or even 8 Rack. Whatever you choose, follow your bliss and fine tune it to the best of your ability. Different people play Magic differently, and in that lies the inherent beauty and freedom of the game.
