15 MOST Luxurious Fashion Brands

11:15
From Oscar de la Renta to Chanel, here are some of the most lavish and prestigious fashion brands. Subscribe to Hindered Thoughts http://goo.gl/d3U3RP 6. Chanel The high fashion wear company was introduced to the world back in 1909 by none other than Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, otherwise known as “Coco Chanel.” This is where the brand gets its inspiration for the famously recognizable logo that is two interlocking C’s. The company specializes in creating haute couture for its wealthy clients but also for fashion models like Naomi Campbell, who once modeled for them, and actresses Marilyn Monroe, Keira Knightley, and Nicole Kidman. One of their most famous products is the perfume No. 5 de Chanel, along with the Chanel Suit. Today, Chanel is valued at being $6.8 billion dollars. An interesting fact to note is that Karl Lagerfeld, the creative director behind Fendi, happens to be the creative director for Chanel as well. 5. Prada Founded back in 1913 by Mario Prada, this fashion brand actually started out by manufacturing leather bags and trunks. It would then evolve into selling everything from clothing to perfume and even a brief stint of LG Prada cell phones. Though the brand may have broadened its inventory, it still spends the majority of its focus creating some of the world’s most exclusive handbags that only the rich and famous can possibly hope to afford. Mario Prada believed that women should not be involved in business so he excluded his own family members from getting involved. In a fantastic twist of irony, his son did not care to run the business so his daughter Luisa Prada took over as his successor and is now currently being run by her daughter Miuccia. 4. House of Versace The fashion empire that is the House of Versace all started with fashion designer Gianni Versace back in 1978. He created a brand that has been synonymous with elegance and simply oozes high fashion. His glamorous gowns have gone on to make a name for himself as a respected designer. Like the case of the famous black dress held with gold safety pins that actress Elizabeth Hurley wore back in 1994 to the premiere of Four Weddings and A Funeral. Sadly, Versace’s life was cut short in 1997 on the steps of his Miami mansion when he became the fifth and final victim of Andrew Cunanan. The tragic event will be the story behind American Crime Story’s season 2 titled: The Assassination of Gianni Versace. After his death, his sister Donatella became the new Artistic Director and has established a $5.5 billion company her brother would be proud of. 3. Gucci Started in 1921 by a Mr. Guccio Gucci, the company was originally dabbing in leather goods. It wasn’t until 19 years later when his son Aldo would take the company from being a one-stop shop into the fashion powerhouse that it’s now known for being. It’s Aldo that would usher in the era of the brand’s iconic “Bamboo Bag” and its “ready to wear segments.” In the 90’s, the company decided to bring American Fashion designer Tom Ford to revamp their women’s wear. He ended up helping launch the brand to where it is today. The fashion brand houses other well-known designers in its collections such as Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, and Yves Saint Laurent. If you’re in the market to do some shopping at this $12.4 billion brand, expect to spend at least $2,000. 2. Louis Vuitton This may come as a shock but the famous fashion brand has been around longer than you might have thought. Formed 163 years ago in 1854, a young man by the name of Louis Vuitton started out as an apprentice for a box-maker. Vuitton ended up becoming a well-known crafter of luxury trunks and opened up his own shop in Paris. He then ended up becoming the personal box-maker of Napoleon III’s wife, Empress Eugenie de Montijo. Fast forward years later and the company is now worth $28.1 billion with a generated revenue of $10.1 billion. Today, Louis Vuitton doesn’t make just trunks but designer handbags and clothing that can be spotted on the most famous of A-listers. 1. Balenciaga The beginning of Balenciaga’s reign began back in 1919 when it was established by its founder of the same name, Cristóbal Balenciaga. As a young child, Balenciaga became an apprentice to a tailor in his hometown of Getaria, Spain and would eventually get his formal training in Madrid. He would go on to create the House of Balenciaga and skyrocketed to success thanks to his artistic genius. He was hailed as the undisputed “ King of Fashion” and was highly respected among his peers which included the likes of Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, and Pierre Balmain. Balenciaga even helped train the likes of high-fashion designers Oscar de la Renta and Hubert Givenchy to name a few.

Karl Lagerfeld - fashion designer and icon | DW Documentary

42:26
Karl Lagerfeld - the name stands for much more than just fashion. What makes the fashion icon so successful? Who’s the man behind the sunglasses? Designer, artist, fashion icon, also known as "Kaiser Karl." No living fashion designer, let alone a German one, is as celebrated as Karl Lagerfeld. On September 10, the man with the trademark ponytail and sunglasses will celebrate his 85th birthday - it’s believed. From dawn to late morning, Karl Lagerfeld designs for Chanel, Fendi and his own signature brand - a combined workload of up to 15 collections a year. A workhorse who never takes breaks or even a vacation, he is also a photographer and filmmaker. His passion for fashion was awakened by a Dior show in Hamburg in 1950. Four years later, at the age of 17, Karl Lagerfeld was hired as an assistant to Pierre Balmain. Karl Lagerfeld recounts his beginnings in the industry, as well as his upper class background and childhood in Schleswig-Holstein. Karl Lagerfeld was greatly influenced by his mother, whom he describes as his personal style icon. Karl Lagerfeld's caustic comments are notorious and dreaded by those at the receiving end. As an artist, Karl Lagerfeld works in several media, from pictures and photographs to book illustrations and videos. The documentary follows Karl Lagerfeld to exhibition openings, during the hectic preparations for his fashion shows, and at photo shoots in Paris as it seeks to uncover the man behind the mask. _______ DW Documentary gives you knowledge beyond the headlines. What Does it Take to Be A Fashion Designer?

06:17
Click for more: http://ww2.kqed.org/artschool/ Oakland high school student Zachary Fernandez made it to the finals on the first season of Project Runway Junior, then headed straight back to Oakland School of the Arts to continue his education as a designer. His newest collection, Kathmandu, was inspired by recovery efforts in Nepal after the devastating 2015 earthquake. Art School followed Fernandez's process as he sketched, sourced fabric, and designed his new project, revealed at a culminating fashion show in spring 2016. Hi, my name is Zachary Fernandez and I'm currently a fashion student. So I am starting my Kathmandu 2016 collection. My collection's gonna be debuting at my school fashion show, and so I have little under seven weeks to get this all put together. So our school assignment was to pick a city that we wanted to be inspired by for this collection. I ended with Kathmandu, Nepal, all of the trouble that they went through last year was really inspiring and I was able to take those ideas of imbalance and the destruction of culture and apply that to this new collection. These are the pieces that I ended up designing. They're ever-changing and they kind of just are always in flux. My sketching process involves a lot of images, a lot of mixed medias, I like to do collages, watercolors, acrylic paste, it's a real reflection of what my mind looks like. Here you have the final sketches that I've done. The sketching process for me is really a major step between just ideas and kind of this fantasy world that I've created in my mind to really functional wearable pieces. Fabric sourcing is one of my favorite things to do. It's really like a group activity, like meet a couple of friends, we'll just go, we'll explore the city, we'll get inspiration. So I'm looking for like a very pale blue that's almost like very silverish, and then I'm gonna be looking for a very deep, rust orange color. Okay, so I need to find this, but more grayish blue. The fabric store is one of those places that you go in with one idea and one concept and one thought, and you come out with like 500 more. This is it. - This is it! - This is it. - [Girl] Dude! - Hey! Yes! So I spend the majority of my time draping and it's definitely a part that will make or break a piece. I take a piece of muslin, which is just a really basic blend fabric, and I started sculpting it to the dress form. And then those mock-ups that I make of the dress form are then fitted to the model, and sometimes I try them on a model, I'm like, this is hideous, I don't know why, it just overpowers her or something happens and that leads to even better ideas and even more just, creativeness. When you design while you create, I just think it takes so much longer and you like pressure yourself so much more. So, my design mind is turned off. And it's just about sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing, and sewing. So after I finish draping, I take a part of that mockup and I totally seam rip it and I re-pattern it, and then I cut out of my real fabric. It's always really nerve-wracking 'cause a lot of times the fabric's all that you have, either the budget doesn't allow for you to get more fabric, or there's simply not anymore left. It has this like box-like structure in it. The box is actually lined with horse-hair so that it can kind of take the shape and that's why I'm kind of trying to like manipulate it right now 'cause it just takes on whatever shape you really need it to. The show, oh the show. Six days, and I'm still cutting up fabric like, I don't think that's normal. There's always going to be that last minute hurry up and finish like state of being. I have a picture in my mind about how this is supposed to go, but who knows if it actually go that way. I think that there can be a lot of different ways to read the look. Obviously you look for like the main things like color, silhouette, is this an evening piece, is this a day piece and you just kind of put the garment and choose certain categories and that really helps people read fashion out, by the time the piece is on the runway I'm already thinking about a whole new collection and I'm really thinking something totally different, but it doesn't really hit me that these people, for them it's the first time that they've seen this. I've spent months and months planning and sketching and putting it together. If I see all these different things in these pieces, but no one else does, then it's kind of sad, but then it's also part of what makes fashion art, is because people see it in so many different ways. We are in my home, studio, bedroom combination in Berkeley, California. I have this look from Project Runway Junior, which was the first episode, and this look for my most recent collection. They really mean a lot to me 'cause they show how much progress I've made within the last four, five months.

Ritu Beri Fashion Designer | 7 Rules for Success [Interview]

10:16
Ritu Beri is one of the TOP Bollywood fashion designers in India. Ritu Beri has accomplished what most designers dream of and we bring you her: 7 Rules to Success for Fashion Designers: #1 Take Tough Challenges #2 Be Persistent #3 Compete with yourself, do your best work #4 Be Scared of being #1 #5 Break Rules: Set your own trends #6 Find Inspiration everywhere #7 Discover What Fires You Transcript: 00:11 So Ritu Beri used to, and I love doing it, even today, I used to take the toughest challenge and I'd say, okay, now I'm going to do a fashion show. When I launched myself as a designer, designers used to do a double designers shows in the sense that would be two designers would be presenting, you know, in a banquet hall, and it was all very organized. So I decided that I'm going to launch myself as a designer and I'm going to not do it with anybody else. I'm going to do a solo show. So all the headaches were on me and then I have challenged myself and I said, I'm not going to do it in a banquet hall. I'm going to do it at the Moody Gardens. Because as a kid I used to walk at the Moody Gardens and this beautiful monument. And I used to always go there and be mesmerized. 00:56 So I decided this is going to be the venue of my shoe. And to add to that, I say, I'm not going to use recorded music. I'm going to get real musicians. Because what I named my collection was a retrospective of the Indian fashion industry, so I went through ancient India, medieval India to modern India, and I went and approach to start, um, to the ECON. Soccer was in hurry, preset you. I got all of them to agree to do the music life for me. And then I was a little designer brand new out of the fashion institution, not knowing what I was doing, but I was presenting my collection at the garden. So I went through the necessary permissions. But the system is duff. So, um, apparently ludy gardens comes under many, many different corporations, so it became a very political event and I had to get permissions and licenses, which apparently I was not aware of. 01:57 I got a few thinking that that was all that I needed. So it became a huge challenge and a huge, um, the press went mad, especially Indian Express. They had me on the cover of every new, every newspaper for the next five days, which was super fun. At one level I had, I had no budgets to pay for publicity. So then I was on the front page and everybody was saying, who is this with dewberry, you know, we've never heard of barry and I became a household name with my very first show. So I really don't take any, any challenge as a problem. It's, there's no such thing as an impossible situation. And I think it's fun to experiment. It's fun to, you know, pave your own path and do something new. Or 02:47 when I was 02:47 in design school lives to go to the library and all I was looking for because I used to enjoy embroideries and I was inspired by embroideries. All I looked for books and Roswell, Assad and weren't many books, but you know, they used to have these uh, design magazines and they'd be a mention of embroidery by Francois lasage. So I've, I've went to London and I looked for books in libraries, but there was very little that I really found, and this was this strange, uh, but I think it was destined. I went to Paris, I think this was [inaudible] 93 or 92. And I was sitting with a very, very important person from Cartier in Paris and she said, is there anybody in the fashion business that you would like to meet? And the only name that completely lit up. And she says, she laughed at me and she said, you are you asking for the moon 03:42 He meets nobody. But, uh, she said, I'll give you his phone number and if you get somewhere, it's completely all luck. All I did for the next four days in Paris was go to a booth, make a goal to a for go have a coffee, go back to the booth. I did this. I think I must have made about 30 calls to him. And, uh, I didn't speak French and the secretary would pick up and she would just speak in French. I had no way to get to him. Finally, I tried really hard and I said to you, would you, do you know somebody who speaks English in the office? 05:04 So all these number ones that everybody was trying to say, I was the first here and number one here. And I like to, um, my competition is only with myself and I, I really mean that because since I began it, Dilla was in junior school, it was about my report card and I had to be the first in class, but when I hit senior school it all changed for me because, um, I was lost and I think I started getting creative and creative people are a bit mad and they don't see everything so rationally. Can a Designer Lose the Rights to Her Name?

02:17
What happens when a designer sells the company that bears her name?  Can she still use her name for future fashion businesses, or for any business at all?   Law Professor (and former general counsel for Kate Spade) Barbara Kolsun explains in this TOL Brief! ► http://www.talksonlaw.com for more legal explainers and interviews with the titans of law visit ► Patreon: TalksOnLaw is on Patreon! Center. TRANSCRIPT The company Kate Spade, Inc. was recently sold to Coach for over $2 billion dollars, and the question often asked is, “Is the individual Kate Spade entitled to use her name going forward?” I’m Barbara Kolsun, I’m the director of the F.A.M.E. Program and a professor of fashion law at Cardozo Law School. I was also, for many years, the general counsel of several fashion companies including Kate Spade. The answer to the question is “no.” Kate Spade sold her name the first time she sold the company. Once a designer creates an entity that owns her brand, which is likely to happen very quickly, she no longer necessarily owns that brand, but again It depends on the contract. It depends on what’s known as the “name and likeness agreement,” which all designers will be asked to sign, if and when they sell their companies, or before that, when they create an LLC or other business entity that owns the intellectual property evolved in the brand. Can the designer thereafter open up shop selling apparel or something else, some other product in the fashion business? Probably not, but it depends on the agreement, the name and likeness agreement. Can the designer go into another business, say selling swimming pools? It depends on the agreement. But generally “no.” Once a designer puts her name on the brand and sells the brand, then the name is no longer hers. Can a designer, after she sold her name, go into business in the same industry? If she uses a different name — probably. Kate Spade recently launched a brand called Frances Valentine. It’s an interesting, very complicated case, but she has a new shoe business called Francis Valentine, but she doesn’t use the name Kate Spade. So once a designer sells her name, sells her company, can she continue to use her name in the same industry? Probably not, but again it depends on the name and likeness agreement that she signed. This is Barbara Kolsun, and thanks for watching TalksOnLaw.

Designers turn Dubai into powerhouse of Indian fashion

05:48
(29 Jan 2018) LEADIN: Indian fashion designers are carving out a niche for themselves in Dubai. Two women have created brands which attract the biggest stars from their homeland as well as an international clientele. STORYLINE: Vivid colours, sparkling sequins and delicate beading - the hallmarks of Indian couture fashion. But these gowns are not hanging in a boutique in Delhi - they are made and sold in Dubai. The high-end fashion is the work of Anjali Khushlani, the founder and designer behind the brand Anjali K. When she started her business six years ago she says there were few Indian couture designers in the UAE. She says her customers wanted something that was "a notch higher" than the mass-produced Indian clothing available in Dubai. "They want to find something different, and not to travel to India, to find bridal wear," she says. Khushlani is not the only designer with Indian heritage making a name for herself here. Meher Mirchandani opened her fashion house 15 years ago. She says Dubai lacks the traditional artisan skills of embroidery and hand weaving commonly found in Indian clothing, so her business has taken a different direction. "That talent did not exist in Dubai. So we were always more Western than Indian but we had ethnic influences," she says. In the Anjali K workshop, the men are focused on delicately hand stitching large swathes of cloth. Details like this are no doubt what appeal to Khushlani's clients - she says most of them are Indian. Mirchandani caters for a similar market - half her orders either come from India or from ex-pats now living in the UAE, but that still leaves a sizeable chunk of customers from the rest of the world. Full of painstaking and intricate work, Anjali K pieces do not come cheap. They start at around 1,600 US dollars and the price goes up according to the complexity of the design. But that's no barrier for India's biggest celebrities. Khushlani has dressed Bollywood star Sunny Leone, a massive coup for her label. "I think people in India and all over the world if they would see a celebrity wearing something they want the same piece," she says. "So I think that's such a big advantage for us that in fact when we dressed Sunny Leone, I remember the next day I had 100 emails." Mirchandani's range sells Western style clothing for between 150 and 250 US dollars. She too has a host of famous fans including American burlesque performer Dita Von Teese and the singer Jordin Sparks. The designer believes the high calibre of Dubai's fashion industry is what attracts well-known names. "Stylists for these celebrities have sourced from the Indian designers (in Dubai) because of the work, because of the quality of the work," she says. "The same has happened with us. When the stylist was looking for Shilpa Shetty, she really liked our piece because it was so simple, the finishing was good, and it was on trend." These female fashion entrepreneurs are turning Dubai into a powerhouse of couture Indian design. Karl Kani: There's No Loyalty in Fashion, Bootleggers, Brand Decline in 2000's

12:14
Designer Karl Kani has made a name for himself when he started his clothing line which was a cross between Hip-Hop and modern day fashion. Once he was on top, the designer says he had major bootlegging issues which caused him to alter his logo and forcing him to find people making knockoffs. He tells DJ Vlad, that he and a close friend, who was able to confiscate the products and make arrests, agreed to find Asian distributors selling his brand. "We had a mission to search all theses Asian factories that were doing it and figure out what they were doing." He explained, "They were bringing the clothing from China with no label on it, attaching the metal plate and the labels here in the US so the clothing could pass customs...that's why we couldn't catch them." Once Kani figured out how his clothing brand was being smuggled in the US, he says the damage had already been done and other clothing lines such as Roc-A-Fella, Enyce, Phat Farm, etc, were on the rise and even seeking out some of his employees. "We had a lot of employees defect from the company and going to these peoples' companies. One in particular went to my competitors and took all my sales people with them and I ended up with no sales people and having to hire my security to be sales reps." Watch the full interview above.

And that young assistant happened to be Yves St. Laurent. Young assistant he really was because he was only 21 at the time. He stepped in and produced a beautiful collection called the Trapez collection and put people's fears to rest. Yves St. Laurent stayed at the house until 1960 when he had to leave to do his obligatory military service. Of course, while he was gone, the house needed a designer, so they brought in Marc Bohan, another respected designer. Marc Bohan stayed at Dior until 1989 when the house felt it needed a change. And then they brought in Gianfranco Ferre, an Italian designer. Ferre stayed until 1996 when he was replaced by John Galliano who designed until 2011. So even though we think about the House of Dior and associate it with Christian Dior, obviously many other designers have contributed to the excellence of the brand.

Toms Shoes | Fashion Designers

Watch more Fashion Designers and Fashion Brands videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/500135-Toms-Shoes-Fashion-Designers Learn about fashion brand Toms Shoes in this Howcast video with expert Nancy Deihl. One thing to remember about TOM Shoes is that there's no Tom. The name of the shoe company is actually an abbreviation of their motto, Shoes for a Better Tomorrow. The company had an unconventional beginning. It was founded in 2006 by Blake Mycoskie, an American entrepreneur who realized that there were people around the world that were suffering because they didn't have any shoes. The founder was disturbed by realizing that people around the world didn't have shoes and that they were subject to injury and disease, but also that they had lower economic and social status because they were barefoot all the time. The founder thought that by giving people shoes he was giving them access to more opportunities. According to the company, for every product sold TOMs will donate a pair of shoes to a person in need. The shoes are manufactured in China, South America and Africa. TOMs has given away over a million pairs of shoes to children all around the world. TOMs shoe styles are very simple. Many of them are based on Argentine alpargata styles which are really like flat soled espadrilles. Some are made with no animal materials, making them suitable even for committed vegans. In addition to shoes, the company also produces some pieces of apparel and some eye wear which they've linked to donations of eye glasses to people around the world with vision impairment. For a fairly new company, TOMs shoes has made a big impact and the donation strategy has been an important part of their success.

Coco Chanel | Fashion Designers

04:23
Watch more Fashion Designers and Fashion Brands videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/500163-Coco-Chanel-Fashion-Designers The founder of the House of Chanel really presents a lot of contradictions. She set a fashion for very simple dressing but she lived surrounded by antiques. The founder of the House of Chanel really presents a lot of contradictions. Coco Chanel came from very humble beginnings but she became one of the most famous women of the 20th century. Even her career had two distinct periods. The first part lasted from around 1909 to 1939, when she closed her couture house because of World War II. The second half of the Chanel career was from 1953 to 1970 when she came out of kind of a self-imposed retirement. Coco Chanel was born in France in 1883 and she was raised in an orphanage, even though she wasn't really an orphan. Her mother had died and her father just couldn't take care of her and her two sisters, so he dropped them off at an orphanage to be raised. As a young adult she was a seamstress in a local shop and also tried to start a career singing in cafes. It's probably there that she acquired her nickname Coco, her real name was Gabrielle, because a couple of the songs she sang had "Coco" in the title. So here singing name, as it were, was Coco Chanel. She was rescued from this kind of unsuccessful singing career by a rich man that she met at the cafe named Etienne Balsan. Balsan was the heir to an industrial fortune, which gave him the time to ride and train and raise racehorses. He was really influential on Chanel, not only in her style of life, but also in her style of dressing, because Etienne and his wealthy riding friends all walked around in English-style riding clothes, and that's the look that she started to acquire. Coco became an excellent horsewoman and was known throughout her life as a very sporty individual. She not only started to wear English-inflected and menswear styled clothes, she actually could do the sports and the outdoor activities that they represented. Chanel actually started her fashion career as a milliner with a small hat shop she opened in Balsan's apartment in Paris. Chanel's hats were very simple, distinguishing her and her designs from a lot of the other fashionable hats at the time. Her shapes were simple, whereas other designers put a lot of ruffles and feathers and flowers on the hats, Chanel put like one or two ornaments, really keeping it simple in line with her design philosophy. Her first actual clothing shop was opened in Deauville, a resort area, in 1913. Because it was a resort area, people were into less formal, sporty clothes, and so her easy-to-wear skirts and pullovers, her knit tops, found a really receptive audience. She became a proper couturier in 1915, when she opened a real couture house, a made-to-order house in another resort area in Varetz. When she moved her couture operations to Paris, her career really took off, and she found clients among the avant-garde, artistic, more modern, forward-thinking women in the social world. During the 1920s and the 1930s, Chanel's style really crystallized. She became known for using a lot jersey in daywear, really easy-to-wear knits. Simple shapes, a lot of black. While some people say that Chanel invented the black dress, that's of course not true, but she definitely helped popularize the style. She did not operate her business from 1939 to 1953. And in fact, her activities during that period remain a bit controversial. When she ended her self-imposed retirement in the '50s and showed her first collection, people were astonished that it was so similar to the work that she had been doing before. They were really looking for something a little bit more revolutionary from this revolutionary designer. But within a year or two, people had realized that this is the Chanel look, and it in fact became very influential on fashion in general.
