Flight to the Lights 2 was the second private chartered flight from New Zealand to fly south to the Antarctic circle with the aim to see and photograph the Aurora Australis, the southern lights. In 2017 a Boeing 767 was flown out of Dunedin, New Zealand, on the inaugural flight. The plane departed Christchurch, New Zealand at 7.35pm on the 22nd of March, 2018, and landed at the same airport 10 hours later. The plane was a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner from Air New Zealand. Only the window seats were sold on the flight, in seated pairs. The time lapse, taken on the starboard side of the aircraft, is slightly cut down from it's original duration of seven hours; due to taking the westward track down we were exposed to more daylight than expected, so the first hour of the time lapse was deemed unnecessary. One second of time lapse = one minute of real time. Specs: Camera: Sony a7S Mk1 Lens: ZEISS Batis 18mm f2.8 Duration: 3.2" exposures, 1 photo every 5 seconds. Images processed in Adobe Lightroom Classic CC and exported as a time lapse in Final Cut Pro 7. Camera was fixed in place and mounted on a tripod on a seat, secured with a combination of gaffer tape and low-tack tape for securing to the window. Special thanks must go to Ian Griffin and his staff of elves at the Otago Museum in Dunedin, Air New Zealand for providing the aircraft and extremely friendly and helpful flight crew, Orbit Travel Dunedin for organising the charter, NHNZ Ltd in Dunedin for the loan of my camera gear (and Braydon for the awesome ZEISS lens!), Jonathan's Photo Warehouse for graciously providing some camera bodies and lenses for passengers to use, plus Stephen, Taichi and Paul for helping to organise and run the successful event. One of the most amazing ways to search for Northern Lights - Piper PA30 aircraft will take you up to the sky to have a closer look to Aurora Borealis. If it is a cloudy weather and you can't see the sky from the ground, there is still a great chance to see the lights while you are up in the sky as well!

The Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis are a strange natural phenomenon that can only be witnessed in the most northern regions of the globe. We had the once in a lifetime opportunity to go to Yellowknife Canada and watch the best aurora of the entire year so far. It was truly a magical moments that no words will ever be able to describe. This is a moment I will cherish for the rest of my life. This Shot is nearly not possible with a normal Camera. You couldn't see the Northern Lights with your eyes because the light of the wing was to bright. Who ever wants to take a smooth shot during landing knows how hard it is to hold the camera still whilst flying 600+ km/h . Never thought of something like this before, but it is possible. Also because of the good teamwork of the crew and my seating neighbor. Thanks a lot. :)

Anders Hanssen, 38, from Senja, Norway, was on a flight from Osla to Tromso when he spotted to aurora - which lasted the whole one hour flight. The part time photographer had dreamt about filming one from an airplane and as he knew the pilots on his flight, he was allowed to sit in the cockpit while the colours formed in front of their eyes. Anders, who owns Visit Senja, a local tourist company, said: "I was so luck to capture the aurora while on a plane, I had the best view it was like I was in heaven. "I think people love the northern-lights because it can be such a mind-blowing experience when the whole sky change and colors flow, create patterns and change speed. **Please contact [email protected] to licence this content** Company Information: Caters Clips is owned and operated by Caters News Agency Ltd, an international multimedia content provider. http://youtube.com/TheVideoPartner If given a whole row to themselves in a flight from San Francisco to Paris, most people would just sleep. Not this passenger, who set up his Canon 5D Mark II digital SLR camera on a tripod and attached a timelapse controller. When he pointed his 16mm-to-35mm lens out his airplane window, the result was this remarkable timelapse video of his 11-hour flight. Taking that Great Circle route above the polar regions, the video flies us through the aurora borealis, giving us a look at those spectacular northern lights. Also remarkable is the fact that the Air France flight crew allowed the use of that bundle of electronic devices throughout the entire flight. At the end of this video, you'll see the rig with which he snapped the 2,459 shots -- one approximately every two miles. After the flight, they were edited together along with a few judiciously placed iPhone pics shot along the way. http://twitter.com/TheVideoPartner

Chasing the Southern Lights. Captured from the Boing jet Dreamliner that was chartered for the ultimate aurora chasers' project “Flight to the Lights” during 22-23 March 2018. The plane departed from the largest airport in South Island New Zealand and went further south where it is close to Antarctica and where the Aurora Oval is, the place where the aurora is highly active. This video contains most of aurora's activity during the flight observed from the port side of the plane. Small reflections from the wing beacon and internal lights occasionally is in the frame. Captured with Sony ILCE-7S (a7s). Standard Youtube licence Sharing greatly appreciated with attribution

Took a series of time lapses of aurora borealis, or Northern Lights, from the airplane while flying from Tokyo, Japan to Chicago, IL., 35,000ft. above earth's surface. The colors were changing so fast right before my eyes, it's hard to capture such beauty on camera. There were some parts where we dipped into the clouds, as well, which inhibited some of my shooting. Shot on Nikon D600, 20mm f/2.8. To use this video in a commercial player or in broadcasts, please email [email protected]

Make sure you set the video quality to HD. More real time video of the northern lights, look out for the two shooting stars and one polar bear. The first section was filmed out of the window of a flight from Toronto. The second in Iceland the third on a polar Bear expedition in Churchill Canada. All filmed on either a Sony a7 or Sony A7s. Aurora graced my flight from Japan to Chicago. There were a few things that made this time lapse more difficult compared to my other Aurora time lapse. It was a full moon, so Aurora was a little blown away by it's brightness, we dipped into clouds most of the time, which messed with my time lapse, plus it was a bumpier flight, so there was a lot of movement in my sequences. Still, it is always a blessing to be able to behold such a sight, especially from the plane.

In late 2017, observing the Aurora Borealis, more commonly known as the Northern Lights, while in mid-flight became a reality for travellers. On 25 November 2017, Air Yukon, the Yukon Astronomical Society and the Yukon government organised a private chartered flight that took off from Whitehorse Airport with 78 passengers to experience the Norther Lights at the altitude of 36,000 feet or close to 11km above ground. The Aurora 360 flight departed at around midnight and landed back at Whitehorse Airport at 3.30am. Passengers had to wait for only around 9 minutes after take-off before they experienced the spectacular dancing lights display for some three hours. The Northern Lights are the result of collisions between electrically-charged particles from the Sun which enter Earth’s atmosphere. Video: Destination Canada.

First time I see a Northern Lights show inside a flight! This is flight FI477 from London (Gatwick) to Keflavik (Iceland) departing at 21:15, Sunday April 3. 2016. Actually, during the flight there were also real northern lights (Aurora Borealis) too be seen from the right side of the plane during the flight, but I did not sit by a window seat so I was not able to see them.

Astronomers and nature photographers were treated to a stunning view of the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) on March 23-24. The eight-hour Air New Zealand charter flight took passengers two-thirds of the way to the South Pole. While sightseeing flights to see the Northern Lights are not uncommon, this was the first-ever to see the Southern Hemisphere's version. In this 51-second video, the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) were visible from passenger windows on board NASA's Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) aircraft as it flew over northern Canada, close to the Northern pole, on September 15, 2015. SOFIA observes the universe with an infrared telescope while flying at 40,000 ft. Observations that night included Westerhout 58, a star forming region in the constellation Cygnus, and Elias 3-18, a protostar. Aurora are more easily seen closer to Earth's magnetic poles. The SOFIA aircraft, a 747SP, is operated by NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center and based at Hangar 703 in Palmdale, CA.

Iceland has been on our bucket list for almost a decade now, and when we were invited to speak at a travel conference in Reykjavik and spend 7 days exploring the country, we couldn't have been happier. Our adventure begins with with a red eye flight landing at 7am only to embark on a 12 hour journey exploring some of Icelands epic glaciers, waterfalls, and fishing it off with a wicked snowmobile ride into the sunset! ...and this was only day 1! Expect a really fun series from our trip! :) Follow our homie Dan Usher!!
