Innovation - Students of Product Design Episode1

12:49
This series 'Students of Product Design' is aimed at anyone interested in the product design process. This first episode looks at innovation, how to innovate and how simply changing the structure of the brief can impact on how innovative you can be. This series won't just talk about stuff, the plan is to share with you as many of the things I have learnt in the last 15 years (or so..) as possible through each stage of the design process to help you become far better designers than I can ever be. I'll be looking at research, sketching, model making, portfolios and a whole load of other things. I often think of youtube as a speed learning tool. Have you ever seen the Matrix films where Neo first learns martial arts by uploading a programme to his head or Trinity learns to fly a helicopter in minutes, that's how I see Youtube, Youtube is our version of the Matrix. So this series which is primarily aimed at students studying industrial design, product design or design engineering in university is designed to do just that, give you a knowledge boost to hopefully make your projects, designs, presentations and portfolio a lot better to improve your chances of getting a position as a designer, or your projects if you want to start your own company, anything related to design. I also hope with the content, that everyone will be able to take something away from it as many of the tips I'll give over the course of this series will be applicable to lots of areas of life. There's just isn't enough out there on product design, compared to say cookery shows it's very under provisioned and so I'm trying to redress the balance. I have a lot more planned, so please be patient, stay tuned and follow me, so that you can be alerted to when the next video is launched. www.producttank.co.uk

The Most Genius Food Packaging Designs Ever Created

10:12
Sometimes all it takes to make a meal great is presentation, so much so that you can even forget how crappy the food is because of how impeccable it’s been packaged. With that in mind, here are perhaps the most genius food packaging designs ever created. Subscribe for more! ► http://bit.ly/BeAmazedSubscribe ◄ Stay updated ► http://bit.ly/BeAmazedFacebook https://twitter.com/BeAmazedVideos https://instagram.com/BeAmazedVideos ◄ For copyright queries or general inquiries please get in touch: [email protected] Credit: https://pastebin.com/tNNgSmU5 To promote the legendary anime and manga franchise Dragon Ball Z, convenience store chain Mini Stop came up with a box that makes their French fries look like Son Goku’s spiky yellow super Saiyan hair. No matter how big or tough your local school bully is, I’m pretty sure that unloved suicidal asshole is not immune to diarrhea. Instead of using materials like wood, paper, or metal, this box of honey is made entirely of beeswax, which means that you can turn it into a wonderful scented candle block by simply adding a wick to it. Tea has a reputation for being a calming beverage and these flowering tea bags just adds to that. These cups are exactly as advertised: they’re edible containers that you can bite down on once you’re done with whatever’s in them. The coffee caddie is a simple yet convenient innovation on coffee cups, with its lid containing holders for your packets of sugar and creamer. You don’t really need to come up with something extravagant to revolutionize something. In one of those rare instances where food and technology combine, McDonald’s’ Goal! This little tin tube that holds cookies turns into a wonderful bowl when you unravel it, which means you’ll have one fewer bowl to worry about after eating it. When McDonald’s had their Luxury Burger promotion, which had them selling sandwiches with pricey ingredients like truffle sauce and such, they made damn sure they won’t serve it to you in a paper wrapper like a peasant. This clever little design does away with all those bulky parmesan shakers you see in stores by molding the cheese into a pencil, which you simply have to shave off using a sharpener and onto your pasta. What’s one of the main problems when you cook pasta? Why, the amount per serving, of course. Not-so-fun fact: it’s considered unwomanly for Japanese ladies to open their mouths in public. When you mix tea time with craftwork, you get these goldfish teabags that make your cup look infinitely more interesting, granted you don’t let it into your head that your drinking goldfish pee. Any alcoholic would weep in joy with this wine bottle, which has a cap in the shape of a glass cup. This clever wooden wine box turns into a quaint little birdhouse complete with perch once you’re done getting sloshed. Fast food chain Togo burger came with this versatile paper packaging for their take-out meals. For one, it can hold everything right from your soda down to your straw. You might know this already, but teabags can be used multiple times. With that in mind, these teabag hangers come in very handy in literally hanging your used teabags to dry after you use them, which is way better than just letting them sit sopping wet in a saucer. Pizza, as awesome as it is, has one glaring flaw: they’re greasy as all hell. With the paper towel pizza mat, however, that won’t be a problem at all.

11 Amazing Eco Friendly Inventions and Ideas

08:37
11 most incredible alternative energy sources like lamps powered by blood or salt and an air conditioner made from recycled bottles. Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 6. The Eco-Cooler This amazing DIY air conditioning system was created by a Bangladeshi citizen named Ashis Paul and it requires no electricity whatsoever. This makes it the first air conditioning system that runs on zero electricity. Made out of a board and recycled soda bottles, this air conditioner is able to cool the internal temperature of huts up to 5 degrees Celsius, which is good because most huts are made with tin roofs that magnify the sun’s heat. The blueprints on how to create one of these are located online for the public so that everyone is able to build one of these. 5. The Blood Lamp What would you do for the sake of having electricity? Would you be willing to cut off your own hair? What about giving up just a drop of your essential life force? That’s what Mike Thompson, the designer of the blood lamp, did when he asked himself the question “what if power came at a cost to the individual?” This is more of a statement piece on the matter of energy conservation but it really makes you think doesn’t it? So how is this possible? Thanks to one special ingredient: luminol. For those of you who watch a lot of crime shows you already know but for those of you who don’t, luminol is what forensic scientists use to identify blood. The chemical reaction occurs only when the luminol reacts with the iron in the blood. Isn’t science just so amazing these days? 4. The Immortus The first invention on this list that runs solely on solar energy is the Immortus car that was created by the company EVX Ventures that is located in Melbourne. Thanks to solar photovoltaic paneling that’s attached to the exterior of the car and a 10killoWatt hour lithium-ion battery, the car is able to run just like any other normal vehicle. It’s also capable of traveling indefinitely at a speed of 37 miles per hour but the range the car can travel is limited by lighting exposure and as the car increases in speed. EVX hopes to start selling their environmentally friendly cars in low volumes to “maintain affordability.” 3. The Ecocapsule This interesting pod that looks like it was ripped right out of some sci-fi movie is called the ecocapsule and it was created by Nice architects. So what this little egg-shaped contraption lets you do is live completely off the grid by harnessing a multitude of energies all at once. It runs on not only solar power but it’s also wind power and comes with a rainwater collection and filtration system. It might look incredibly small but you’d be surprised to know that the ecocapsule is able to fit two grown adults. Not only that, but all the essential amenities needed in a home such as a kitchenette, a working toilet, and a shower with hot water. The cool thing about this is that it’s super portable and flexible enough to be transported to almost anywhere in the world. 2. The LifeStraw This amazing little device has the potential to provide millions of people in Third World countries with the opportunity of clean filtered water and it only costs around 37 US Dollars. Created and developed in Denmark back in 2005, the LifeStraw allows you to safely drink water from anywhere. Yes, from toilets to rivers the LifeStraw is capable of removing up to 99.99 percent of waterborne bacteria. Its purification pipe is so incredibly powerful that it can even get rid of parasites such as E. coli, salmonella, and much more. Just one of these LifeStraws is can filter out at least 1,000 liters of water. At the time of its invention, it was given extremely high praises and was dubbed as “one of the ten things that will change the way that we live.” 1. The Ocean Cleanup Device This device is still just an idea but nonetheless it is a revolutionary idea that could have a monumental impact on our ocean one day. The idea was proposed by a Dutch man named Boyan Slat, who was just 19-years-old at the time that he proposed his idea. He stated that his concept would be able to clean up around 20 billion tons of plastic debris from the ocean without disturbing fish and plankton. If this ends up seeing the light of day it could possibly end up saving the lives of dozen marine animals who are prone to swallowing plastic and end up dead. The Ocean Cleanup Foundation is currently raising funds to see the fruition of this project.

In every society there are specific segments of the population that try a new product or adopt a new behavior at different stages. Early adopters are quick to try a new product before anyone else while laggards are the last to try something and may not try it at all. In this short video we introduce you to each of these different types of people in society and explain why they try new things when they do.

It's not a four-letter word. Crap is a four-letter word. So is mediocrity. As is the word average. Four-letter words are qualitative, not quantitative (that's what allows me the above artistic license). (The bulk of this article originally appeared on Fast Company 4 years ago and is as relevant today as it was then.) Listen to the words of Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, and Seth Godin and you’ll discover what separates true innovators from everyone else. It all comes down to dots. In his famous commencement speech, Steve Jobs said: "You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something–your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life." Sir Richard Branson has a mantra that runs through the DNA of his companies. The mantra is A-B-C-D. (Always Be Connecting the Dots). In his manifesto, Stop Stealing Dreams, Seth Godin wrote how students today are educated in “collecting dots. Almost none of it spent teaching them the skills necessary to connect dots. The magic of connecting dots is that once you learn the techniques, the dots can change but you’ll still be good at connecting them.” HELPING A CLIENT CONNECT DOTS Recently, this came to light when I was speaking with a client who was noticing things needing correction and frustrated that employees were not seeing, and addressing, the same things. I responded stating it’s not a flaw of his seeing things and wanting to improve them that was the problem. The actual problem was why his employees didn’t see those details. I concluded that this was the single difference between the innovator and the ordinary person: one saw the dots and connected them while others 1) didn’t see them or 2) if they did, they didn’t explore, question, or connect any of them. This aspect of constant attentiveness to how things are applies to companies, products, brands, as well as to personal brands and is the foundation for this thing we call innovation. THE “WHAT IS INNOVATION?” VIDEO Inspired by this discussion and some of today’s more brilliant minds, I decided to write an essay on innovation. The closing lines of the essay struck a chord: So what is innovation? Those other dots. The ones others miss. And having the certainty to know that the dots you see are not only valid but necessary if the world is to move forward. branding | design | animation | ted talks | shark tank | business | ceo | disruption

Diffusion of Innovations

03:37
Understanding the adoption lifecycle of innovation can be characterised using Everett Rogers’ Diffusions of Innovation theory. The theory categorises innovation adopters into five segments: innovators, early adopters, early majority, late majority and laggards. Innovation must reach a certain critical mass point of adoption or it will likely fail. Gordon E. Moore referred to this point as the ‘Chasm’, which is often also known as the ‘S’ curve.

Biomimicry: Business Innovations Inspired by Nature: Jakki Mohr at TEDxBozeman

12:57
Biomimicry--a tool for creativity and innovation--has the potential to transform business practices to be in harmony with nature.  Professor Jakki Mohr, Regents Professor of the University of Montana, provides many examples of how biomimicry is used to develop technological innovations, including:  Qualcomm's mirasol display technology, creating vibrant color based on the butterfly wing; Swedish Biomimetics 3000 uMist technology for industrial sprays without VOCs based on the bombardier beetle; Greenshield Technology's waterproof fabric finish based on the lotus leaf, and Ornilux Birdsafe Glass based on UV reflective strands in spider webs.  Her research and projects with companies commercializing biomimetic inventions and infusing biomimicry into their innovation processes provides insights for success.  Interface Flor, with its line of Entropy carpet tiles, is a shining success story in the world of biomimicry, based on not only its use of biomimicry in product innovation (patterned after the forest floor), but also in its infusion of sustainability through-out the company. Jakki Mohr, Ph.D., is the Regents Professor of Marketing and the Jeff & Martha Hamilton Distinguished Faculty Fellow at the University of Montana-Missoula. She is an international expert on the marketing of technology and innovation, and the co-author of a book on that topic. Motivated by the desire to bring the promise of new technologies to solve social and global problems, she has worked with companies and universities worldwide in strategic market planning to commercialize innovation. Her most recent interest is the field of biomimicry. Funded by the Marketing Science Institute out of Boston, she is studying how companies can successfully use nature-inspired designs to solve technical and engineering challenges. What is INNOVATION MANAGEMENT? What does INNOVATION MANAGEMENT mean?

06:35
What is INNOVATION MANAGEMENT? What does INNOVATION MANAGEMENT mean? INNOVATION MANAGEMENT meaning - INNOVATION MANAGEMENT definition - INNOVATION MANAGEMENT explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Innovation management is the management of innovation processes. It refers both to product and organizational innovation. Innovation management includes a set of tools that allow managers and engineers to cooperate with a common understanding of processes and goals. Innovation management allows the organization to respond to external or internal opportunities, and use its creativity to introduce new ideas, processes or products. It is not relegated to R&D; it involves workers at every level in contributing creatively to a company's product development, manufacturing and marketing. By utilizing innovation management tools, management can trigger and deploy the creative capabilities of the work force for the continuous development of a company. Common tools include brainstorming, virtual prototyping, product lifecycle management, idea management, TRIZ, Phase–gate model, project management, product line planning and portfolio management. The process can be viewed as an evolutionary integration of organization, technology and market by iterating series of activities: search, select, implement and capture. Innovation processes can either be pushed or pulled through development. A pushed process is based on existing or newly invented technology, that the organization has access to, and tries to find profitable applications for. A pulled process is based on finding areas where customers needs are not met, and then find solutions to those needs. To succeed with either method, an understanding of both the market and the technical problems are needed. By creating multi-functional development teams, containing both engineers and marketers, both dimensions can be solved. Innovation management is based on some of the ideas put forth by the Austrian economist Joseph Schumpeter, working during the 1930s, who identified innovation as a significant factor in economic growth. His book “Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy” first fully developed the concept of creative destruction. Innovation management helps an organization grasp an opportunity and use it to create and introduce new ideas, processes, or products industriously. Creativity is the basis of innovation management; the end goal is a change in services or business process. Innovative ideas are the result of two consecutive steps, imitation and invention. The process can be viewed as an evolutionary integration of organization, technology, and market, by iterating series of activities: search, select, implement and capture.
