Innovation - Students of Product Design Episode1
This series 'Students of Product Design' is aimed at anyone interested in the product design process. This first episode looks at innovation, how to innovate and how simply changing the structure of the brief can impact on how innovative you can be. This series won't just talk about stuff, the plan is to share with you as many of the things I have learnt in the last 15 years (or so..) as possible through each stage of the design process to help you become far better designers than I can ever be. I'll be looking at research, sketching, model making, portfolios and a whole load of other things. I often think of youtube as a speed learning tool. Have you ever seen the Matrix films where Neo first learns martial arts by uploading a programme to his head or Trinity learns to fly a helicopter in minutes, that's how I see Youtube, Youtube is our version of the Matrix. So this series which is primarily aimed at students studying industrial design, product design or design engineering in university is designed to do just that, give you a knowledge boost to hopefully make your projects, designs, presentations and portfolio a lot better to improve your chances of getting a position as a designer, or your projects if you want to start your own company, anything related to design. I also hope with the content, that everyone will be able to take something away from it as many of the tips I'll give over the course of this series will be applicable to lots of areas of life. There's just isn't enough out there on product design, compared to say cookery shows it's very under provisioned and so I'm trying to redress the balance. I have a lot more planned, so please be patient, stay tuned and follow me, so that you can be alerted to when the next video is launched. www.producttank.co.uk

What is INNOVATION MANAGEMENT? What does INNOVATION MANAGEMENT mean? INNOVATION MANAGEMENT meaning - INNOVATION MANAGEMENT definition - INNOVATION MANAGEMENT explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Innovation management is the management of innovation processes. It refers both to product and organizational innovation. Innovation management includes a set of tools that allow managers and engineers to cooperate with a common understanding of processes and goals. Innovation management allows the organization to respond to external or internal opportunities, and use its creativity to introduce new ideas, processes or products. It is not relegated to R&D; it involves workers at every level in contributing creatively to a company's product development, manufacturing and marketing. By utilizing innovation management tools, management can trigger and deploy the creative capabilities of the work force for the continuous development of a company. Common tools include brainstorming, virtual prototyping, product lifecycle management, idea management, TRIZ, Phase–gate model, project management, product line planning and portfolio management. The process can be viewed as an evolutionary integration of organization, technology and market by iterating series of activities: search, select, implement and capture. Innovation processes can either be pushed or pulled through development. A pushed process is based on existing or newly invented technology, that the organization has access to, and tries to find profitable applications for. A pulled process is based on finding areas where customers needs are not met, and then find solutions to those needs. To succeed with either method, an understanding of both the market and the technical problems are needed. By creating multi-functional development teams, containing both engineers and marketers, both dimensions can be solved. Innovation management is based on some of the ideas put forth by the Austrian economist Joseph Schumpeter, working during the 1930s, who identified innovation as a significant factor in economic growth. His book “Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy” first fully developed the concept of creative destruction. Innovation management helps an organization grasp an opportunity and use it to create and introduce new ideas, processes, or products industriously. Creativity is the basis of innovation management; the end goal is a change in services or business process. Innovative ideas are the result of two consecutive steps, imitation and invention. The process can be viewed as an evolutionary integration of organization, technology, and market, by iterating series of activities: search, select, implement and capture.

It's not a four-letter word. Crap is a four-letter word. So is mediocrity. As is the word average. Four-letter words are qualitative, not quantitative (that's what allows me the above artistic license). (The bulk of this article originally appeared on Fast Company 4 years ago and is as relevant today as it was then.) Listen to the words of Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, and Seth Godin and you’ll discover what separates true innovators from everyone else. It all comes down to dots. In his famous commencement speech, Steve Jobs said: "You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something–your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life." Sir Richard Branson has a mantra that runs through the DNA of his companies. The mantra is A-B-C-D. (Always Be Connecting the Dots). In his manifesto, Stop Stealing Dreams, Seth Godin wrote how students today are educated in “collecting dots. Almost none of it spent teaching them the skills necessary to connect dots. The magic of connecting dots is that once you learn the techniques, the dots can change but you’ll still be good at connecting them.” HELPING A CLIENT CONNECT DOTS Recently, this came to light when I was speaking with a client who was noticing things needing correction and frustrated that employees were not seeing, and addressing, the same things. I responded stating it’s not a flaw of his seeing things and wanting to improve them that was the problem. The actual problem was why his employees didn’t see those details. I concluded that this was the single difference between the innovator and the ordinary person: one saw the dots and connected them while others 1) didn’t see them or 2) if they did, they didn’t explore, question, or connect any of them. This aspect of constant attentiveness to how things are applies to companies, products, brands, as well as to personal brands and is the foundation for this thing we call innovation. THE “WHAT IS INNOVATION?” VIDEO Inspired by this discussion and some of today’s more brilliant minds, I decided to write an essay on innovation. The closing lines of the essay struck a chord: So what is innovation? Those other dots. The ones others miss. And having the certainty to know that the dots you see are not only valid but necessary if the world is to move forward. branding | design | animation | ted talks | shark tank | business | ceo | disruption

Konica Minolta counts on augmented reality technology for upcoming product innovations
Having started with an investment in the Austrian start-up Wikitude last year during the Pioneers Festival – the world’s leading mobile augmented reality (AR) technology provider for smartphones, tablets and digital eyewear – Konica Minolta is now also collaborating with one other start-up, namely Anyline, also from Austria. Anyline is a mobile text recognition technology, which enables smartphones to turn any text in a camera’s vision field into digital output, such as for scanning blood sugar meters, gas and power meters as well as debit and credit cards. With these collaborations Konica Minolta is further strengthening its AR approach and is driving its activities for offering AR business solutions as well as acting as a referred partner for its customers in collaborations.
CompactHabit: Product and Process innovations
Using the automotive sector as a reference, the process for the production of Compacthabit modules consists, firstly, of the manufacture of a monolithic chassis of reinforced concrete, which is placed on a assembly line and equipped with all its components, resulting in a completely finished building module. As a sustainable system based on repeating units of varying sizes and heights of up to eight floors, Compacthabit’s scope ranges from medical facilities to multi-family dwellings, hotels, schools, student dorms and other institutional markets. This construction system also reduces considerably the time of the construction process, achieving execution times ranging between 25% and 30% of one built with traditional systems. Compacthabit substantially improves the levels of technical, functional and environmental quality of buildings. With this system the ecological footprint in the whole life-cycle of the building (energy consumption and CO2 emissions) is reduced by 35% compared with the same building constructed using traditional systems.

Platforms, the Sharing Economy, and Business Model Innovation
Gregory La Blanc Lecturer, Berkeley-Haas The rise of Uber, Airbnb and other "platforms" is part of a larger digital transformation of businesses, converting products into services, changing fixed into variable costs, shortening supply chains and development cycles, allowing for more flexibility and customization of products and pricing. All of this is made possible by lower costs of gathering, storing, retrieving, and analyzing data. Although there is much that is new in this transformation, there are many historical similarities with previous industrial revolutions. They all have at their core innovations in the organization of information that lead to more efficient allocation in the production process. This talk will explore the origins and nature of these innovations.
Innovation Management at Rutgers Business School
http://www.business.rutgers.edu/thought-leadership - Innovation entails integrating technologies and other knowledge into a whole product, a whole technology platform, a whole business, a whole company and a whole ecology of enterprises. Innovation management focuses on the linkages and synergies among people, work units, knowledge systems, alliance partners, and inter-organizational associations that are necessary to create streams of new products and services. Innovation management is about creating and managing all these links. Tear down those silos. Diffusion of Innovations
Understanding the adoption lifecycle of innovation can be characterised using Everett Rogers’ Diffusions of Innovation theory. The theory categorises innovation adopters into five segments: innovators, early adopters, early majority, late majority and laggards. Innovation must reach a certain critical mass point of adoption or it will likely fail. Gordon E. Moore referred to this point as the ‘Chasm’, which is often also known as the ‘S’ curve.
