CORRECTION at 8:55 Ans is 9/(x + 3)^2 Thanks to the Subscriber --
distribute the -1 into (2x-3). I wrote it as -2x+6 when it should be -2x+3. The answer should end up being 9/(x+3)² instead of 12/(x+3)²

This is Eric Hutchinson from the College of Southern Nevada. In this video I will show an example that requires finding everything (concavity, inflection points, critical numbers, intervals of increasing/decreasing, intercepts) and we will use this information to graph the function. It is a long video, however it will show all the detailed information for how you find all that the question is asking for. The lecture notes for this video can be found here: http://sites.csn.edu/ehutchinson/Notes/3_4NOTES181U.pdf

When the Basic Differentiation Rules aren't enough... In this video I do 4 examples of finding the Derivative of a function using the Product Rule. The textbook I teach from states the product rule as d/dx[f(x)g(x)]=f(x)g'(x)+-g(x)f'(x) instead of d/dx(f(x)g(x))=f(x)g'(x)+-f'(x)g(x) and I have adjusted my class notes to reflect this discrepancy. I have checked all of the examples in this video and the final answers are correct.

The product rule is one of several rules used to find the derivative of a function. Specifically, it is used to find the derivative of the product of two functions. It is also called Leibnitz's Law. The product rule can be used with multiple functions and is used to derive the power rule. The product rule can also be applied to dot products and cross products of vector functions. The Leibnitz Identity, a generalization of the product rule, can be applied to find higher-order derivatives.

Here's some practice for choosing between the chain rule and product rule when the problem doesn't tell you which rule to use (like in a unit exam or final exam).
If you're studying for a test on derivatives and you don't know which differentiation rules to use to take the derivative of a given function, check out these eight practice problems for identifying whether to use the chain rule or the product rule.
Good luck!

► My Derivatives course: https://www.kristakingmath.com/derivatives-course
Product rule is a derivative rule that can be used to find the derivative of a function which itself is the product of functions. The product rule tells you that you can take the derivative of just one of the factors at a time, multiplying it by the other factor, and then add to that the reverse scenario.
Keep in mind that you may need to use product rule in conjunction with power rule, quotient rule, or chain rule. Product rule can also be used when the function is the product of more than two factors.

Hi, I’m Krista! I make math courses to keep you from banging your head against the wall. ;)
Math class was always so frustrating for me. I’d go to a class, spend hours on homework, and three days later have an “Ah-ha!” moment about how the problems worked that could have slashed my homework time in half. I’d think, “WHY didn’t my teacher just tell me this in the first place?!”
So I started tutoring to keep other people out of the same aggravating, time-sucking cycle. Since then, I’ve recorded tons of videos and written out cheat-sheet style notes and formula sheets to help every math student—from basic middle school classes to advanced college calculus—figure out what’s going on, understand the important concepts, and pass their classes, once and for all.
In this lesson, we learn how about the product rule for exponents. This tells us to add the exponents when we are multiplying two expressions in exponent form with the same base. We also learn and practice the power rules for exponents.
