Port au Port Peninsula, Newfoundland | Arrows of the Sea | N163AC | Maritime Transmission Link

04:05
Newfoundland and Labrador may just be the world’s seabird capital. It is home to the hemisphere’s largest gather of marine birds. Every year some 35 to 40 million seabirds travel to this Heavenly Island called Newfoundland. Watching the Northern Gannet has been one of nature’s most amazing sights to view. These large white with black wing tip birds dive from as high as 100 feet and end with a spectacular crash into the ocean to feed on the huge schools of herring and mackerel that frequent the coast of the Cape. These birds have up to a 6 foot wing span! https://roadsendnaturalist.com/tag/northern-gannet/ At the Southwest end of the Peninsula at Boutte du Cap Park on the cliffs were spotted Sealions in groups of 10+ swimming and the Fin and MinkeWhales that surfaced and skimmed along while feeding. Hidden Falls was also another scenic stop located in Sheaves Cove where a view of the waterfall and sea animals were photographed and filmed. While driving near the scenic French Ancestor Route on Port au Port Peninsula, Alpacas of Newfoundland roamed the hillside overlooking Bay St. George. Alpacas have been a domesticated species of the Andes of South America, which resembles the llama. I have never felt anything soffer than the Alpaca fiber. Since April, N163AC continues to lift Powerlines on the Maritime Transmission Link just South of Stephenville on the island of Newfoundland that will extend to Nova Scotia. A power dam at Muskrat Falls in Labrador will generate the power. The Maritime Link is historic because it will be the first submarine electric interconnection between Newfoundland & Labrador and the North American electricity grid. There will be a combination of over 1500 steel towers and wooden structures to carry the power over land. Apart from the powerline erections from the Air-Crane, there has been Subsea Cables installed between Cape Ray and Point Aconi. Specialized ships and equipment will lay two cables on the ocean floor. To protect them from pack ice, anchors and other risks, they will be buried or covered. Power is transmitted along the conductor, which is in the centre of the cable; all the other layers of the cable are added to protect the conductor. The two cables are each 170kms long. Diverting back to the Port au Port Peninsula, Hidden Falls, located in Sheaves Cove was beautiful both for the view of the water fall as well as sea lions and whales in the distance. Thanks to Keith Campbell for the addition ground footage of Bubba setting the transmissions towers using a mounted Go Pro Hero 4. Source: http://www.caperace.com/seabirds-newfoundland

BEST Cruise Port Excursion for a Full Land & Sea Eco Tour in Antigua

02:15
On Royal Caribbean's Serenade of the Seas for an 11-night Southern Caribbean cruise, sometimes when it comes to port excursions we make reservations outside of the cruise line. Why? Sometimes booking through the cruise ship equates to very crowded tours. Sometimes the cruise line doesn't offer as much variety. Don't get me wrong, there are times we do book activities through the cruise line, but in this case we did not. Highlights include: snorkeling, birding, Hell’s Gate and a hike at Great Bird Island where we also had wonderful lunch. ▬ READ THE BLOG POST ▬ http://bit.ly/port-excursion-antigua ★★ SUBSCRIBE HERE ★★ YouTube: http://bit.ly/YT-Justwander-in ▬▬ FOLLOW ALONG! ▬▬ ✩ Travel Blog: http://bit.ly/JustWander-in ✩ Instagram: http://bit.ly/IG-Justwander-in

Land & Sea Pack's Harbour, Labrador

23:07
This episode of Land & Sea was dedicated to Scott Kean, David House and Eph Skinner, captain and crew of the Sea Alert, who lost their lives when the ship sank off the coast of Labrador in the fall of 1995. I had the pleasure of working with all of them during a project testing ice berg impacts on a cliff side just out side Pack's Harbour, Labrador in the summer of 1995. I was in charge of the diving operations on the project and didn't know at the time that this would be one of my last projects working as a commercial diver.

Holland's Barriers to The Sea

44:21
The Delta Works in the Netherlands (Holland) is the largest flood protection project in the world. This project consists of a number of surge barriers, for examples: 1- The Oosterscheldekering is the largest of the 13 ambitious Delta Works series of dams and storm surge barriers and it is the largest surge barrier in the world, 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) long. The dam is based on 65 concrete pillars with 62 steel doors, each 42 metres wide. It is designed to protect the Netherlands from flooding from the North Sea. 2- The Maeslantkering is a storm barrier with two movable arms; when the arms are open the waterway remains an important shipping route however when the arms close a protective storm barrier is formed for the city of Rotterdam. Closing the arms of the barrier is a completely automated process done without human intervention. 5 AMAZING Ship Launch Videos

03:19
Ship launching is the process of transferring a vessel to the water. It is a naval tradition in many cultures, dating back thousands of years. It has been observed as a public celebration and a solemn blessing. Ship launching imposes stresses on the ship not met during normal operation, in addition to the size and weight of the vessel, and it represents a considerable engineering challenge as well as a public spectacle. The process also involves many traditions intended to invite good luck, such as christening by breaking a sacrificial bottle of champagne over the bow as the ship is named aloud and launched. There are three principal methods of conveying a new ship from building site to water, only two of which are called "launching." The oldest, most familiar, and most widely used is the end-on launch, in which the vessel slides down an inclined slipway, usually stern first. With the side launch, the ship enters the water broadside. The third method is float-out, used for ships that are built in basins or dry docks and then floated by admitting water into the dock. In all cases, heavy chains are attached to the ship and the drag effect is used to slow the vessel once afloat, until tugboats can move the hull to a jetty for fitting out. Implementing the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative at Land and Sea Ports: Are We Ready?

01:32:46
Implementing the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative at Land and Sea Ports: Are We Ready? - mars-6:hrs06H_S311_090507 - Cannon 311 - Committee on Homeland Security - 2009-05-07 - Subcommittee on Border, Maritime, and Global Counterterrorism. Ms. Sanchez: Today the subcommittee will receive testimony on the current status of the implementation of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative or WHTI at our land and sea ports. We have two great panels this morning that will allow us to hear from the government officials responsible for the implementation of WHTI as well as representatives from industry groups who will speak about how implementation will affect their respective industries. I look forward to receiving your testimony and having an open dialogue as you answer Members' questions. The goal of WHTI is to strengthen border security while facilitating entry for U.S. citizens and legitimate foreign visitors. Having an efficient and operable passport card program created by WHTI will help the United States ensure those who enter our country, are who they say they are. With that said, residents of border communities, who for years have needed nothing more than an oral declaration of their citizenship to cross the border, will have to adapt to new procedures when they cross the border to see family and friends.
