The Amoeba Sisters discuss gene and chromosome mutations and explore the significance of these changes. Music used with permission from Adrian Holovaty (http://www.youtube.com/adrianholovaty). This video has a handout here: http://www.amoebasisters.com/handouts.html We appreciate the feedback we get for clarification or improvements on our videos. At 2:11, we try make the A (adenine) base look upset now that the complementary base T (thymine) has been replaced with a G (guanine) in a point mutation. But we wish we had put more distance between the cartoon bases to clarify, that now, they cannot bond in this way. Note: This can sometimes be fixed by a polymerase in proofreading- but if not fixed- the G may be be matched with a C and the mutation will remain. America's Climate Change Future: Housing Markets, Stranded Assets, and Entrenched Interests Session 4: Pushing against climate denial and defending science Moderator: Mark Blyth (Brown University) Initial paper/presentation for discussion: “Evidence-based Solutions to Combat Scientific Misinformation,” by Justin Farrell, Robert Brulle and Kathryn McConnell (Yale University and Brown University) Panelists: Kert Davies (Climate Investigation Center) Timmons Roberts (Brown University) Kerry Ard (Ohio State University) The Rhodes Center for International Economics, the Institute at Brown for Environment and Society, and the Office of the President are pleased to announce a one day conference on the economic and political consequences of climate change. The conference focuses on three key areas. First, the economics of rising sea levels for real coastal estate markets, which comprise a large portion of US housing market growth and hence personal wealth. The economics of ‘stranded carbon assets.’ That is, the raw materials and financial assets tied up in carbon release that have a high current value but whose values could decline precipitously in the future, especially if ambitious action is undertaken as scientific consensus suggests is needed. The third is the organized politics of climate denial: who are the agents and institutions behind scientific disinformation and how can such a politics best be countered? A lunchtime keynote speech will be given by Rhode Island Senator Sheldon Whitehouse. Lunch will be provided for participants. Read full Research Brief on the conference: https://watson.brown.edu/research/2019/brown-university-hosts-conference-americas-climate-change-future Co-sponsored by the Office of the President, the Rhodes Center, and IBES, Brown University, and the Office of U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse

As a veterinary pathologist and researcher, Ilze never expected to find herself at the centre of a scandal. It's not a typically scandalous job, after all. But what began as a professional investigation triggered by an outbreak of a deadly dog disease, developed into a tangled mess of vested interests and politics. Ilze is a Latvian veterinarian who has returned to her home country after 14 years in the US. In the US, she found her passion for veterinary pathology and trained in this field, receiving a PhD and becoming a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. Throughout her career, she has been influenced by people that she admired for their integrity in research and diagnostic work. Veterinary pathology has opened opportunities for Ilze to assist owners of animals, as well as medical researchers using animals to study human diseases. In recent years, Ilze was drawn into the investigation of an outbreak of a previously rare disease which was affecting dogs in Latvia. This investigation has been under the microscope from the media, state institutions and politicians because it has touched on a sensitive subject, our beloved pets. This is the first time in her life that her research has been so politically charged, with her scientific credibility under challenge. Two other comments Peter anticipate to get: 1) "You didn't understand what [insert name here] meant." Yes, that's entirely possible. In the absence of facts and figures, a feelie argument is usually vague and ambiguous, often hinting at some elusive point that's never explained. When I read a scientific paper, on the other hand, I understand exactly what it's saying. The hypothesis is laid out, the methodology explained, the observations and calculations clearly shown, and the conclusion spelled out. That's the difference. 2) "The idea that CO2 is a trace gas is not a 'feeling'. It can be shown that it has no effect on climate." My response: Yes, but the 'feeling' is that because CO2 is a trace gas then it follows that it has no effect on climate. If this is correct, please cite a study that has some facts and figures to support it, otherwise it remains just a 'feeling.' If you have a source with some other evidence that CO2 has no effect on climate, then I have probably covered it in a previous video.

▶ SUBSCRIBE! http://bit.ly/PlanetDoc Full Documentaries every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday! ▶ HISTORY DOCUMENTARIES | http://bit.ly/PlHistory We traveled to the Bolivian altiplano plateau for the first pre-Inca cultures. We crossed Lake Titicaca, walked through the arid Peruvian coast, we visited the oldest archaeological sites, witness rituals led by shamans and know the looters and grave robbers. Know everything that happened centuries before the Incas to become the lords of the Andes absorbing all previous cultures. 00:50 From the ruins of the former settlements of the Inca and Tiwanaku cultures, on lake Titicaca, the Cayahualla priests worship Tata Inti, the Sun God. The Tiwanaku culture appeared in about the fourth century AD, on the Bolivian plateau, just a few kilometres from the shores of Lake Titicaca. 04:13 On the islands of the Sun and Moon, we find numerous ruins of Tiwanaku origin, and which were later occupied by the Incas. The ancient mystical observatories are still used by the shaman in their ceremonies of invocation and meditation. 06:24 The majority of the coast of Peru is dry desert land. Nonetheless, this inhospitable land was the birth place of great civilisations, . this is the case of the Chimú culture who constructed irrigation channels, and created gardens in the desert. With their advanced techniques, they developed agricultural societies capable of supporting large numbers of inhabitants. The Chimú culture built cities like this one, Chanchán, perhaps the largest city in the world at the time, with around 100,000 inhabitants. 08:00 Still today, the fishermen along the coast of northern Peru use these boats, called “cattail horses”, to work the fishing grounds close to the shore. The cattail is a type of reed or bulrush which grows in the marshlands. Once it is cut and dried in the sun, it becomes tough and flexible, very resistant, and waterproof. At dawn, the fishermen set out to sea, expertly maintaining their balance as they ride the waves, using the most ancient of all surfing techniques. 11:02 The anthropomorphic face of the ‘Slitter of Men’s Throats’, at the Tomb, or ‘Huaca’ of the Moon, introduces us to the Moche culture, which flourished along these same coastal valleys, before the Chimú empire, from 200 BC to 700 AD. 15:22 The ‘San Pedro’ is a cactus which contains a powerful alkali with relaxant and hallucinatory properties mescaline, a mind-altering substance which induces a profound state of trance, also known as peyote. In the dark of night, and presided over by the shaman, rituals are held, at which they ingest the San Pedro. 21:34 The collection of over 16,000 skulls in the Archaeological museum in Lima makes it possible to study the pathology of these ancient cultures. These Nasca and Paraca skulls were subjected to a traumatic deformation, apparently simply for aesthetic reasons. A long, thin skull was a symbol of the upper class. 25:28 The discovery of the Tomb of the Lord of Sipan, a former president of Peru, was the most important archaeological discovery of America in the last decades. 30:00 These objects are made of gold, and come from the tomb of the Lord of Sipan. The police seized them from the grave robber Ernil Bernal, and they provided the clue for the archaelogist Walter Alva to discover this extraordinary Moche mausoleum. 30:32 The ‘Huaca Rajada’, the ‘Cracked Tomb’, is the burial complex of the Lord of Sipan. Excavations are still going on at this extraordinary find. 37:16 Every night, under cover of darkness, the robbers continue to find treasures, raiding the tombs of the Moche, Chimu, Chancay, Paracas, Nasca…The treasures they unearth are bought for pitiful sums by unscrupulous merchants, and sold on the black market. 41:00 We are leaving the coast and heading east, to discover the Chachapoya culture. We can see the ancient walls of their settlements along the cliffs and crags, totally inaccessible. Without a doubt, Kuelap is the most astonishing of all the Chachapoya cities. On the sacred mountain of La Petaca, there are over one hundred tombs in which they laid to rest their mummified dead. It is not known how they were able to construct them high up on the sheer rock face. The Chachapoya mummies are the product of a relatively sophisticated process. 49:21 And finally, the Incas arrived! Their Empire, the Tahuantinsuyo, extended from what is now Ecuador, to Argentina and Chile, absorbing all previous cultures. They became the masters of the Andes. They built astonishing cities, like the sacred Machupichu, abandoned since the arrival of the Spanish. Dr. Michelle Thaller, an Astronomer and Deputy Director of Science for Communications at NASA Headquarters, presented a Maniac lecture entitled, "Emotional Science.” As a science communicator, for years, Michelle has watched audiences, large and small, respond to science talks. All too often, she has watched the most fascinating, awe-inspiring images and discoveries fail to even keep an audience awake. Without an emotional connection to latch on to, most people do not respond to scientists, which in the past may have been innocuous –just perpetuating a stereotype of the blank, overly intellectual science personality. But in today’s world of deniers, false news, and a desperate need to address climate change, emotional irrelevance is a luxury we can no longer afford.”

Solomon Island foreign minister, Danny Philip criticised current French nuclear testing at Mururoa Atoll, and the foreign minister for the Marshall Islands, Phillip Muller, said that recently uncovered documents showed that in 1954, with the urging of the US, the UN Secretary-General delayed circulating a Marshall Islands protest of U.S. testing there. Phillip Muller, minister of foreign affairs of the Marshall Islands, sot: Mr. president, we are steadily unravelling the large amount of information now available to us on the nature and consequences of nuclear testing activities carried out in the marshall islands cutaway to u.s. delegation Muller, sot: It grieves me immeasureably to report today that in one of the trusteeship documents we discovered, it was confirmed that in a meeting held in new york on may 10, 1954 the secretary general of the united nations agreed at the urgings of the-then u.s. ambassador Lodge, to withhold from circulating from member states the position from the marshall islands...the marshallist petition which pled with the united nations to put a halt to the test would be withheld by the secretary general pending the completion of the test period. 1.45 You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/6b4ab6f297b16abefdb333df1eac9622 Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork

J. Krishnamurti & David Bohm - Brockwood Park 1980 - 10: Cosmic order Summary: Is there an order which is not man-made? Can the brain ever be free from the impositions, pressures, wounds, bruises, all the trivialities of existence? Time is my whole existence. I take refuge in the past, which cannot be changed. Why does the brain accept this way of living, and why doesn't it break it down? As long as I have my roots in the past there cannot be order. If the universe is not of time, can the mind which has been entangled in time, unravel itself and so be the universe? --- This channel is managed by the Krishnamurti Foundation Trust, UK, and by the Krishnamurti Foundation of America. The role of the foundations was described by Krishnamurti when he said, 'The foundations will see to it that these teachings are kept whole, are not distorted, are not made corrupt. They will not give rise to any sectarian spirit in their activities... nor create any kind of place of worship around the teachings or the person.' We maintain extensive archives of Krishnamurti's original works and all four Krishnamurti foundations are actively engaged in the publication of material in various forms. Start with the first book https://youtu.be/Lbar0kbWJm4 . ● 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐠 ● This book talks about some very strange and unusual things. This is all so shocking, that you won’t want to believe it. But you will not be asked to believe it. Methods will be presented that allow you to verify everything yourself. And only then will your ordinary way of looking at things fall apart. We all, in one way or another, find ourselves in the power of circumstances. Desires go unfulfilled, dreams never come true. And our worst expectations justify themselves, as if to spite us. Can’t we turn this around? It appears that we can. And you’ll learn how. Transurfing is the technology for controlling reality. In spite of the completely fantastic nature of the ideas presented in this book, they have already found practical affirmation. Those who have tried Transurfing, have experienced amazement, verging on ecstasy. The surrounding world of transurfers changes in an inexplicable way, literally before their very eyes. Those who ventured to employ these methods in everyday life were astonished (perhaps, even frightened) by how real and effective they are. The name is “Transurfing of reality” by Vadim Zeland. It’s not one book in fact, but the whole series of books that build up several concepts into one coherent theory. In a nutshell, Transurfing is a model of seeing and controlling the world. In Russian speaking countries, this book became a bestseller and an iconic piece of esoteric philosophy. Many ideas of the Transurfing were known long before Vadim Zeland nevertheless this book is simply amazing and helps to look at the world from a completely different angle. It is important to understand prior to reading that Transurfing is no panacea for all woes. John Michael Greer discusses his latest book 'Dark Age America – Climate Change, Cultural Collapse, and the Hard Future Ahead'. As we lurch on into the early part of the 21st Century, converging crises in energy, economy, and environment are rapidly undermining the foundations of industrial civilization and the materialistic way of life which so many of us take for granted. Energy – because cheap, easily accessible fossil fuels are running out and industrial civilization as we know it simply cannot be sustained by renewables. Economy – because at almost every level, global, national, corporate, and personal, we are drowning in debt that cannot and therefore will not be repaid but whose unravelling will cause mass destruction of governments, banks, entire industries, and millions of lives. Environment – because centuries of industrial civilization have wreaked havoc on the biosphere, triggering catastrophic climate change while poisoning the ecosystems on which life on Earth depends. Factor in population growth, mass migration, and escalating terrorist threats, and you have a dangerously unstable situation. Despite the protestations of puppet politicians, elite economists, and utopian scientists, no amount of wishful thinking, money printing or shiny new technology will ride to the rescue. The Prius of our dreams is heading straight for the brick wall of reality, and the current convulsions such as the Brexit referendum in the UK, the impending implosion of the European Union, and the election of Donald Trump as US President are but the latest wave of woes crashing on the shore of a fantasy future we fashioned for ourselves in a brief moment of gas guzzling madness. Under the illusion of invincibility we still tell ourselves that 'this time it's different' but as we shall soon discover, forces far beyond our control have other ideas. In his most uncompromising work to date, John Michael Greer maps possible futures for America during the hard times ahead and it's clear that before things get better, they're going to get a lot worse. http://thearchdruidreport.blogspot.co.uk/ Many more interviews at http://www.legalise-freedom.com If you find this content interesting, please consider supporting my work with a donation http://legalise-freedom.com/make-a-donation/ FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/LegaliseFreedom TWITTER: https://twitter.com/LegaliseFreedom Bumper music: Cliff Martinez 'Traffic OST' John Harrison ‘Day of the Dead OST’

Unabridged audio book - Genre(s): Action & Adventure Fiction, Science Fiction Space Tug by Murray Leinster (1896 - 1975) Joe Kenmore heard the airlock close with a sickening wheeze and then a clank. In desperation he turned toward Haney. "My God, we've been locked out!" Through the transparent domes of their space helmets, Joe could see a look of horror and disbelief pass across Haney's face. But it was true! Joe and his crew were locked out of the Space Platform. Four thousand miles below circled the Earth. Under Joe's feet rested the solid steel hull of his home in outer space. But without tools there was no hope of getting back inside. Joe looked at his oxygen meter. It registered thirty minutes to live. Harrison (1958) was the first to discover of intermittent human habitation about 49,000 years ago in the Niah Cave National Park. Baker et al. (2007) unraveled the complexities of the late Pleistocene to Holocene habitation of the Niah Cave. Flenley (1998) and Bird et al. (2005) suggested of a continuous savanna habitat with from the Asian mainland into Borneo and interrupted by a network of ancient Sunda River system. Dodson et al. (1995) postulated that the biogeographical history of Southeast Asia contributed to extensive admixture during Pleistocene low sea levels of genetic groups of an obligate freshwater fish (the river catfish, Hemibagrus nemurus) isolated during periods of high sea levels. During Pleistocene glacial maxima, the sea level was lower than at present and the islands of the Sunda shelf (Sumatra, Borneo and Java) and the Asian mainland were connected by lowlands traversed by rivers. Thus, the fish from Baram, Endau and Mekong rivers were genetically related. Piper et al. (2008) identified 27 mammal, 11 bird and eight reptile taxa recovered from the Terminal Pleistocene deposits at Niah Cave. Some of these animals are extinct and extent in distribution in Borneo. Other biologists suggested Pleistocene refugia found in Borneo to explain for the gene flow and genetic divergent of certain species.

Lunch Hour Lecture on tour at the British Museum: A climate of fear: what the past tells us about human responses to climate change Dr Joe Flatman (UCL Institute of Archaeology) Linking in with World Environment Day (5 June 2010), archaeologist Joe Flatman uses ten objects from the British Museum to explore what the past tells us about human responses to climate change. The barrage of conflicting information about climate change can seem insurmountable - a mass of data on a problem too big for any one person to understand or any one community to manage. Archaeology offers a key to unlocking this problem: ancient objects from around the world provide us with insights into how people in the past dealt with, perceived of, responded to and ultimately prospered in changing climates. Archaeology thus also provides analogies for how modern society can face the 'climate challenge' in the 21st century -- and beyond.

I will tell you details about the story.... The world is full of mysteries. Some drive us to discover more about the world, just as archaeologists search for the roots of human civilization. Others perplex us, much like the piece of modern machinery discovered among ancient bones. Still, others inspire us to believe in the impossible, whether the ingenuity of humankind or the guidance of the divine. No matter what you believe, learning about these mysteries can provide inspiration and insight into the nature of our world. The following unsolved cases demonstrate not only the impossible beauty of the planet and human creativity but also the importance of pausing to recognize both. 👉 Thank for watching! Please Like and Subcribe this Chanel. 👈 7 BIGGEST UNSOLVED MYSTERIES OF ALL TIME YOU NEED KNOW. 1. Stonehenge Built in several stages, Stonehenge began about 5,000 years ago as a simple earthwork enclosure where prehistoric people buried their cremated dead. The stone circle was erected in the centre of the monument in the late Neolithic period, around 2500 BC... 2. The Bimini Road According to Greek legend, the city of Atlantis sunk into the ocean in one single day, wiping its existence off the earth 11,000 years ago. Since that time, scientists, treasure hunters and philosophers have searched endlessly to find even a trace of the lost world, said to be partially intact somewhere below the ocean waves... 3. Aluminum Wedge of Aiud The Aluminum Wedge of Aiud is a wedge-shaped object found two kilometers east of Aiud, Romania, on the banks of the Mures River in 1974. The object was reported to be unearthed 35 feet under sand and alongside two mastodon bones.... 4. The Voynich Manuscript The Voynich Manuscript has been dubbed "The Most Mysterious Manuscript in the World". It is considered a Manuscript codex and dates to the early 15th century (1404-1438), possibly created in northern Italy. It is named after the book dealer Wilfrid Voynich, who purchased it in 1912. Some pages are missing... 6. The Nazca Lines Stretching across the Nazca plains like a giant map or blueprint left by ancient astronauts, lie the famous Nazca Lines of Peru. Peru is associated with the Inca Civilization.... 7. The Shroud of Turin Despite decades of intense scrutiny, the Holy Shroud remains an unsolved mystery. This rectangular linen cloth measures 14 feet 5 inches by 3 feet 7 inches, and it bears the imprint of a bearded adult male with hands over his groin.... By about 50,000 years ago (50 ka) a basal West Eurasian lineage had emerged (alongside a separate East Asian lineage) out of the undifferentiated "non-African" lineage of 70 ka. The basal Western Eurasians were early exposed to significant Neanderthal admixture. Introgression of Neanderthal traits persisted in European populations into the present, affecting traits such as skin tone and hair color, height, sleeping patterns and mood.European early modern humans (EEMH) lineages between 40 to 26 ka (Aurignacian) were still part of a large Western Eurasian "meta-population", related to Central and Western Asian populations. Divergence into genetically distinct sub-populations within Western Eurasia is a result of increased selection pressure and founder effects during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, Gravettian). By the end of the LGM, after 20 ka, A Western European lineage, dubbed West European Hunter-Gatherer (WHG) emerges from the Solutrean refugium during the European Mesolithic. These mesolithic hunter-gatherer cultures are substantially replaced in the Neolithic Revolution by the arrival of Early European Farmers (EEF) lineages derived from mesolithic populations of West Asia (Anatolia and the Caucasus). In the European Bronze Age, there were again substantial population replacements in parts of Europe by the intrusion of Ancient North Eurasian (ANE) lineages from the Central Asian steppes. These population replacements are associated with the Beaker culture archaeologically and with the Indo-European expansion linguistically. As a result of the population movements during the Mesolithic to Bronze Age, modern European populations are distinguished by their clinal differences in WHG, EEF and ANE ancestry. Admixture rates varied geographically; in the late Neolithic, WHG ancestry in farmers in Hungary was at around 10%, in Germany around 25% and in Iberia as high as 50%.Sardinians are characterized by almost pure derivation from EEF. The contribution of EEF is strongest in Mediterranean Europe, and declines towards northern and northeastern Europe, where WHG ancestry is stronger. ANE ancestry is found through throughout Europe, with maxima of about 20% found in Baltic people and Finns. WHG ancestry is also strongest in northeatern Europe, with contributions close to 50% found in the Baltic. Ethnogenesis of the modern ethnic groups of Europe in the historical period is associated with numerous admixture events, primiarily those associated with the Roman Empire, and the Germanic and Norse, Slavic, Arab and Turkish expansions. Research into the genetic history of Europe became possible in the second half of the 20th century, but did not yield results with high resolution before the 1990s. In the 1990s, preliminary results became possible, but they remained mostly limited to studies of mitochondrial and Y-chromosomal lineages. Autosomal DNA became more easily accessible in the 2000s, and since the mid-2010s, results of previously unattainable resolution, many of them based on full-genome analysis of ancient DNA, have been published at an accelerated pace.

In line with the American Anthropological Association’s 115th Annual Meeting theme, “Evidence, Accident, Discovery,” which aims to interrogate the “underlying causes and foreseeability of violence and catastrophes” as well as how “misfortune is interpreted and causality attributed in humanly-preventable harm,” this session—Tourism in a Time of Terror, Part I: Terrorism, Politics and Violence—examines the ways in which tourism and travel impacts, and is impacted by, terror in all of its forms. By “terror,” we mean not only the current wave of militarized, religio-political terrorism that is sweeping much of the world—from Pakistan to the United States, Belgium to Kenya—but also other acute fears stemming from natural and man-made disasters: severe economic crises, migration and the immigrant “other,” nuclear meltdowns, tsunamis, and climate change. Indeed, like other global phenomena, tourism is shaped and structured by worldwide, systemic factors; while often seen as external to the objectives, goals, and processes of tourism, these “outside” forces nevertheless contribute to shaping and indeed structuring the ways in which tourism is both implemented and experienced by a range of actors. In this post-9/11 era, tourism is inexorably tied to, and shaped by, terror and terrorism: on the one hand, strong feelings of affect repel travel to lands perceived of as dangerous, radical, or contaminated; on the other hand, terrorism itself often specifically targets touristic infrastructures (busses, trains, airplanes and airports, markets, heritage sites, etc.). Yet terror also works as a compelling “mechanism of seduction” that draws the curious, adventuresome, or thana-obsessed to “dark tourism” sites of death, destruction, and historical violence. While some anthropologists examined the link between tourism and terror in the years surrounding the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the eastern United States, there is a notable gap in contemporary engagement with the issue. Complementing the ATIG-sponsored Part II, which explores affect, insecurity and disasters, this session--Part I: Terrorism, Politics and Violence--focuses on the socio-political dynamics of tourism and terror, exploring the ways in which global forms of violence and terror both condition and are conditioned by tourism. In particular, the papers here show how tourism is used by both nation-states asserting their governmentality as well as by so-called terrorists aiming to foster instability. Collectively, they examine the social, political and economic impacts of transnational terror on tourism: from jihadist terrorism and political instability in North Africa and the Middle East, to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, from Caribbean violence to Mexican and Afghani narco-terrorism (as well as the transnational so-called "war on drugs"). Together, they interrogate both the causes of the link between intentional acts of fear-creation with tourism, as well as responses by tourists and those within the tourism industry to intentional and unintentional acts of terror.

Title: The USGS Cascades Volcano Observatory - Research, monitoring, and the science of preparing society for low-probability, high-consequence events * Volcanoes in the Cascade Range erupt twice per century on average, with eruptions often lasting for years. * Although eruptions are generally not as high-consequence as large earthquakes, they are still high-consequence events. * When a volcano wakes up there can be intense public interest - which requires crisis management, even if the eruption is small. ---------- Find this video and thousands more at https://usgs.gov/gallery. Epidemics in Western Society Since 1600 (HIST 234) In the last decade of the nineteenth century, malariology emerged as the most prestigious and intellectually exciting field in the new discipline of tropical medicine. The disease's complexity and resistance to conventional public health strategies posed a major challenge to doctors and scientists. Plague measures and social hygiene had no effect in curbing malaria, and the disease proved difficult to classify. The case of Italy, and the malaria eradication program of 1900-1962, furnished a model for other efforts across the world. In evaluating the Italian campaign, it is important to distinguish between valuable lessons and warnings for future efforts, and in particular to account for the diversity of strategies responsible for its success. 00:00 - Chapter 1.
