One of the toolbars that comes with SketchUp allows you to quickly change the style settings of your SketchUp model, and it doesn’t really get talked about all that much. It’s called the styles toolbar. Model Credit – Apartment Building by Paulwall Note that this toolbar allows you to switch between preset styles. If you want to create a custom style that adjusts the way your model looks, I’ll link to a video about that below. When you look at this toolbar, there’s basically two sections in it. First, there’s two boxes to the left of a little line. This affect your ability to see different edges through your faces. They can be turned on and off independently of the other options. The second section allows you to adjust your face settings, meaning the way your actual faces within SketchUp look. Let’s start by looking at the first two options. The option on the left allows you to turn on X-Ray mode. It creates a lot of confusion for newer users, because they’ll click on it without knowing what it does, then they can’t figure out how to change their models back to the way they were before. You can see that when you click on this option, it turns your faces somewhat transparent, allowing you to see through your faces into your model. This can be great for looking into more complex models to see what’s inside. If you want to adjust your transparency of your model, you can do so by going into your styles section, in the faces tab, and changing your transparency quality to “nicer,” then dragging your slider. In addition to using the X-Ray mode tool, you can also use the “Show back edges” function to add more of a light dotted line overlay wherever you have edges behind your shape. This function doesn’t really turn your faces transparent, so my assumption is that it’s just a lighter weight. One of the nice things about this is that you can use the edges to inference from even though they’re blocked by faces. The other set of options are all about changing the way that your faces look within SketchUp. Unlike the X-Ray/Show Back Edges options that you can turn on or off, you have to have one of these options selected – you can’t turn them off by clicking once or twice. The first option puts you in wireframe mode, where your faces in your model don’t show up at all, only your line work. The second puts you in hidden line mode, where only your lines and faces show up, but there’s no coloring or shading on your faces. This mode is great for previewing shadows. The third option is shaded mode, meaning that your model will show colors, but not textures, so any textured face will just be shaded – the image files for the textures won’t be loaded. The fourth option is full-on textured mode – all your textures and texture image files will load with this setting. Finally, the last option puts you in monochrome mode. This mode basically just shows your faces shaded by front and back face, so you can see which faces have the front side facing outward, and which ones have the back side facing outward. This mode is very useful for checking face orientation in your model. Note that you can adjust the color of your front and back faces in the styles section of your tray.

Product Links in the description are typically affiliate links that let you help support the channel at no extra cost. Curviloft This extension is great for creating Skins along frames and other complex sets of lines. When you use it properly, you can make truly amazing shapes within SketchUp. Joint Push Pull Ever get the message in SketchUp that you can't push-pull a curved surface? This extension allows you to push pull multiple surfaces at once, push pull round surfaces, and more. This is a great extension for adding thickness to complex objects as well. Clothworks (Free Version) Clothworks is a realistic cloth simulation tool. While the full version has some unlockable features, like moveable pins, and different kinds of smoothing, the free version of clothworks does still allow you to simulate cloth and very realistic ways! Truebend/FredoScale Last year, I featured FredoScale for its ability to bend objects within SketchUp. This year, I'm still featuring FredoScale, specifically for its radial bend tool, but with a catch - I'm also recommending a new extension from Thom Thom that allows you to bend objects along a 360 degree radius, while FredoScale only bends objects along 180 degrees. Animator One of the areas where a base SketchUp installation lacks a bit is in the animation functions. However, this extension, created by Fredo6, allows you to actually animate moving geometry. Flowify One of the most powerful extension for SketchUp is flowify, which allows you to bend geometry based on a target shape with 4 corners. This allows for the creation of more complex shapes and objects by using a complex target shape. Slicer Slicer allows you to take solid shapes and break them up into different slices, allowing you to make very interesting geometry, but also allows you to export these different slices to a CNC routing machine, helping you create real models from these shapes in real life. Note that shapes for slicer have to be solids, so you may want to use a tool like Solid Inspector to help you create the solid geometry. FFD FFD is an extension that allows you to create a "Bounding Box" around a group of geometry, which can then be used to manipulate the geometry within the box. When you move the points on the bounding box, FFD will use those points to deform your shape. Soap Skin Soap Skin and Bubble is an extension that allows you to select a frame, create a face along it, then inflate it to create different faces - this is an excellent extension for the creation of shapes like tensile structures, etc. ThruPaint - As we move forward, UV Mapping and the placement of materials is becoming more and more important. This extension allows you to really customize the location and mapping of your materials within your SketchUp models.

Creating a Custom Style in SketchUp with Edge Settings - The SketchUp Essentials #19

16:21
This SketchUp tutorial will teach you to create custom styles by adjusting edge settings to change the way your model looks. Want to support what I do? Consider supporting me on patreon - http://www.patreon.com/thesketchupessentials Consider purchasing a SketchUp course - http://www.thesketchupessentials.com/courses -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Part 1 – Lines and Saving In this week’s video, we’re going to talk about how to create your own custom style in SketchUp. I’ve talked a lot about the attributes of existing styles in the past. Now we’re going to create our own. To start off, click this little button with the plus sign on it. This will create a new style. Name it whatever you’d like. This will be your style. Now to start off, this will just create a new thumbnail in the “In model” drop-down. First note – if you want to save your new style, right click on it and click save as, then pick a location. Then you can load this style in future versions of SketchUp. In addition, if you save your styles in a folder, you can use the “Open or create a collection” option to open all the styles in a given folder. Now let’s talk about customizing our style. To customize your style, you’re going to look under the “edit” tab. This is where all your different style options are located. If you look at this section, there are 5 boxes right at the bottom of the edit tab – this is where you’re going to change the style options in your model. The one that looks like a wire frame box is where you edit your edges. In this box, you can change everything from showing edges at all, to changing the thickness of your lines, to adding extensions and endpoints to your lines. Jitter will render your lines at a slight offset, giving your model a slight hand-sketched look. Remember that when you start getting a ton of different lines in your model, having most of these turned on will slow your model down. The drop down at the bottom allows you to adjust how lines are colored. Turn on “by axis to see which lines in your model are drawn along axes.” If the lines aren’t colored, they aren’t drawn straight on an axis. That’s where I’m going to end today’s video. In the next styles video, we’re going to talk about adjusting the way materials are shown in your model. If you liked this video, please remember to click that like button down below. If you’re new around here, remember to click that subscribe button for new SketchUp content every week. If you like what I’m doing on this channel, please consider backing me on Patreon. SketchUp Hatching, Lineweights, Line Styles, and More with 2D Tools - Extension of the Week #44

Product Links in the description are typically affiliate links that let you help support the channel at no extra cost. In today’s extension of the week video, we’re going to discuss a suite of tool that’s built to help you model in 2D. Before we get started, I want to thank my two newest Patreon supporters – Michael Kitchen and Dave Garcia! Patreon, as you know, is the crowdfunding support website where you can support creators on YouTube. If you like what I’m doing on this channel, please consider supporting me at the link below. One of the other perks of being a supporter is you can vote on the extension of the week. This week’s extension of the week, selected by my Patreon supporters, is called 2D tools. Plugin Name: 2D Tools Plugin Developer: TIG Plugin Cost: Free! Where can you get it? You can download it from the SketchUcation warehouse, or by following the link in the notes below. Tool Functions – This tool is basically designed to give you a set of tools that are similar to those found in other CAD packages that help you draw in 2 dimensions. One of the nice features is that TIG has included a comprehensive help file that tells you exactly how each tool in the extension works. You can access this help file by clicking on the question mark icon at the end of the list. This extension is based around the ability to set a “Z plane.” The Z plane basically allows you to lock your height above ground for the tools that you’re using. For example, I could lock my Z-Plane to the ground plane, or I could set it to a fixed height, like 6’, at which point any tool I use would draw specifically on that plane. You can also set your plane relative to a current plane, meaning you could type in “+24” to set a new plane 24” above the plane you currently have active. The line tool can be set to generate both lines and guidelines by tapping the control key. In addition, you can create lines as a welded set or individual lines by tapping the alt key. You can set your Z-plane within this tool as well by tapping the tab key. The rectangle tool is a 3 point rectangle, meaning you set the length first, before the width, unlike the 2 point built in SketchUp rectangle tool. The 2D freehand tool allows you to draw a freehand shape, and comes with several other options, like setting the default segment length and the ability to draw a closed loop. The 2D arc tool gives you several different ways to draw arcs, including adjusting segment counts, arcs by radius, or arcs by angle. The 2D circle tool allows you to draw both 2 point circles by radius, 2 point circles by diameter, and 3 point circles. The 2D polygon tool appears to be very close to the circle tool, with the exception of the ability to set the length of a polygon’s side. The facemaker tool creates a face within any set of edges that form a closed loop. The 2D hatching tool comes with multiple different hatchings (installed with 2D tools) that allow you to create a hatch pattern within a face. You can access the different hatchings by right clicking in open space. These hatchings can then be adjusted in the SketchUp materials manager. The fillet tool allows you to create a radiused fillet between two edges. This generally means that you can create a curve between two intersecting lines, instead of having them come to a point. You can set the radius of these fillets within this tool. The 2D adjust tool allows you to trim or extend lines. The 2D line style allows you to adjust the style of lines in your model. However, you should be careful with this one, as it’s not truly a line style tool, as much as it generates a series of groups along a path that you can turn on and off in your layers. Still, it does allow you to generate thicker lines and dotted lines in a SketchUp model. The 2D text tool allows you to generate text in your model. Unfortunately, this does not appear to allow you to edit the text once it’s been created. The 2D polyline edit tool allows you to edit polylines that you’ve created.

SketchUp Make vs. SketchUp Pro Comparison - The SketchUp Essentials #47

06:44
In this video, I talk about the differences between SketchUp Make (the free version) and SketchUp Pro (the paid version) ♦SUPPORT ME♦ http://www.thesketchupessentials.com/support -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Options To start off, let’s look at cost. SketchUp comes in 2 versions – SketchUp Make, which is free, and SketchUp Pro, which at the creation of this video, costs $695. First of all, I want to put something out there, because there seems to be some confusion – this is a single payment of $695 (again, at the time of this video’s creation). A license for Autodesk Revit, another building design program, is (at the moment) $2,000/year! That’s a yearly recurring cost. A full AutoCAD license is $1470/year, and an AutoCAD LT license is $380/year. So to put that in perspective, a one time $695 payment is actually a pretty good deal for a software with this level of capability. So now that we know what it costs, and what some of the options are, let’s talk about capabilities and what you’re getting for your money. Modeling Capabilities SketchUp Make (the free version) contains most of the modeling tools and capabilities of SketchUp pro. There are a few exceptions – SketchUp pro contains Solid Tools – a set of tools designed for working with solid objects that is useful for things like 3D printing. In addition, it comes with a set of advanced camera tools which are very useful when working with things like set design or complicated camera angles. I’m not 100% clear on this one, but I believe the dynamic component editing options may only be available in SketchUp Pro as well. I want to say something to put all of this in perspective, because I get a LOT of questions about SketchUp pro – I created the first 215 videos on my YouTube channel with a SketchUp Make license before I finally saved up enough to go out and purchase a Pro license, and the reason I bought a Pro License was specifically so that I could teach people how to use Layout for architecture. I was in no way ever limited in my ability to create any kind of model by using a Make license. One new change is that Google recently ended access to their map data by SketchUp, meaning that the free geolocation features lost their data source. SketchUp was able to find a new provider, but that new provider charged licensing fees, so now the satellite and terrain functions are features only found in SketchUp Pro. Import/Export Another defining feature of the SketchUp Pro version is its ability to import and export different kinds of files. With the pro version, you can import and export a lot more kinds of files, but the most important is the ability to import and export DWG, or AutoCad Files. In addition, I believe you can export higher resolution animations with the pro version. Layout Probably the biggest reason that people purchase the Pro Version of SketchUp is for access to Layout. Layout is SketchUp’s tool for creating documentation and presentations, so things like construction plans. You can use it to add dimensions, labels, title blocks – basically anything you need to present and export plans. Teaching people how to use this program was the reason I eventually bought my Pro License. Style Builder As you’ve probably seen if you’ve watched any of my videos on Styles, SketchUp comes with a number of built-in styles that allow you to change the way your models look. This program allows you to create custom line styles to adjust the way your models look even more. Technical Support A pro license also comes with the ability to email customer support for help. I believe this is a one year license, after which you’d have to renew. Commercial License According to the licensing agreement of SketchUp, if you’re using SketchUp for commercial uses, you should be using a pro license. So if you’re just modeling for fun, you probably won’t have too much use for a pro license, but if you’re using SketchUp to make money, you should have a pro license. Hopefully this video clarified some of the questions around a SketchUp Make vs. SketchUp Pro license, and when you’d need each. Leave a comment below if you have any questions. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE More SketchUp tutorials and resources at http://www.thesketchupessentials.com Check Us Out On - Twitter - http://www.twitter.com/easysketchup Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/thesketchupessentials Pinterest - http://www.pinterest.com/easysketchup/

How to apply and edit styles in Google SketchUp

01:14
To learn how to apply and edit styles in Google SketchUp look at the steps below. Don't forget to check out our site http://howtech.tv/ for more free how-to videos! http://youtube.com/ithowtovids - our feed http://www.facebook.com/howtechtv - join us on facebook https://plus.google.com/103440382717658277879 - our group in Google+ Different in built styles can be applied to your model in Google SketchUp. These various styles can be applied to give your output different effects. Step # 1 -- Opening the "styles" panel To open the "styles" panel go to the "windows" menu on the top and select its option. The panel that appears shows the style being used in the model at that moment. Step # 2 -- Going to different types of styles Go to the drop down menu that right now states "in model". Over there you will see different categories from which you can select different types of styles. There are different assorted styles; ones with different colors, one with various sketch effects and many more. You can choose whichever you wish to use. The style that you select or the one you even apply for a second on the model gets imported to the "in model" section. Step # 3 -- Editing the "styles" Any style that you apply can also be modified from the "edit" tab. There are five different settings here that you can alter. You can change the edges, the face style, alter the sky and ground, and create different watermark and modeling settings. Step # 4 -- Mixing "styles" In Google SketchUp two styles can also be merged into one through the "mix" tab. When you open this tab, the edit settings are present at the top and different styles at the bottom. Choose a style and add it to any of the settings above, this creates a mixture of the two. Step # 5 -- Creating a new style The "create new style" option on the top right of the panel allows you to make a new style as per your requirement. You can make a new one that will be a copied one of the current style you are using. You can then edit and mix it with other styles to create one that is custom made.

I haven’t had a chance to do an in-depth dive into the new features, but here’s an overview of what I’ve found so far. If I miss anything, I’ll put out an updated video in the future. Here’s the thing – this release contains a really controversial change - The biggest change is the reconfiguration of the versions. There’s no longer a downloadable free version. The free version is now hosted on the internet. My.SketchUp has been renamed to SketchUp free and will now be the free version of SketchUp. The Make 2017 version will remain downloadable from SketchUp’s website. First of all – a lot of this information is coming from a forum post on the SketchUp community forums, so make sure to visit that post for more information - https://forums.sketchup.com/t/what-s-up-with-sketchup-make/55219 and also to share your opinion. In addition, SketchUp has made a detailed change log available here - https://help.sketchup.com/en/article/141303 SketchUp Free Web based version – can save models – feels a bit stripped down – no extensions. SketchUp Pro Drawing and Miscellaneous Changes Rectangles can now be drawn about center with the control key Freehand color coding – tool changes color based on axis it’s perpendicular to. Tape measure improvements – automatic area of faces and lines as you mouse over Native STL Import/Export Sectioning Tools New Sectioning Tools – automatic coloring of section cuts Naming/managing section tools using the outliner Select a color for fills using the Styles dialogue Improved section plane performance BIM Functions Custom Reporting Advanced Attributes IFC Files – Attributes go along with your model when you export them Layout Functions Scaled Vector Drawing ??? 4 Ways to CREATE DETAILS in Layout (SketchUp to Layout Tutorial)

Product Links in the description are typically affiliate links that let you help support the channel at no extra cost. I wanted to talk about a couple different ways you can display details in your layout documents. 1. The first way is obviously the easiest – simply create a 3D view of your detail, then import that viewport into Layout (Detail Credit – Metal Coping Detail by International Masonry Institute). One thing to note if you do this is that you can only set it to a scale if you turn your perspective view off. These details can actually be very helpful for contractors as they show/indicate in a 3D space how the assembly actually looks. 2. Option 2 – Model your detail in SketchUp, then create a 2D view and import into Layout. This works in a very similar manner to if you were to create a building elevation. Simply create your view, then save and create a workspace with your scene. 3. Option 3 – Draw your details directly in Layout. I find this option to be a bit clunky – I’m not a giant fan of the way things inference in Layout, but you can directly draw within a model in layout with the “Make Scaled Drawing” option. Simply select your scale and start drawing. 4. Option 4 – You can also adjust your details that you get out of SketchUp by drawing over them to allow for patterns, hatching, and other information. I’m also going to link to a couple videos from SketchUp and Nick Sonder where he talks about creating details. If you’re looking for more layout resources, make sure to check out www.thesketchupessentials.com/layout. That’s where I’m going to end this video.

Style Renderings in SketchUp WITHOUT PHOTOSHOP using SketchFX! [Dual Style Tutorial]

Product Links in the description are typically affiliate links that let you help support the channel at no extra cost. What we’re going to do in this model is create an image where we transition from one style to the other using masks in SketchFX. This is a building I brought in from the Placemaker Building bundle – it’s a series of models that you get when you purchase a license for Placemaker, and I thought it would be a pretty good example model (except that the right tower is a bit high). I’ll link to that in the notes down below, but this will work with basically any model. Apply a style. A few things to remember – For slower PC’s, turn auto update off. This way it’s not updating every single time you orbit in your model. You can click the refresh button to update your view. Tip 2 – sometimes, your view will lock on whatever SketchFX last rendered when auto update is off. Simple tap the space key to get out of your current view and back to your model space. First thing – apply a style. Use a preset. Once you’ve done this, we’re going to use a mask to overlay another style and also create a sky in the background. In this case, we’re going to use a linear mask to apply a style. In addition, we’re also going to apply a sky to our background, also using masking.

SketchUp Free vs. SketchUp Pro

01:09
Here are the differences between SketchUp free and SketchUp pro. All of the "Large Tool Set" tools and the modeling environment are identical between free and pro. Pro has additional 3D export options such as numerous cad formats, 3DS, and object. All sketchup users can use dynamic components, but only pro users can author them. That is done with the component attributes dialog, which is only available in the Pro version of SketchUp. The Pro version of SketchUp also comes with Layout 2, a presentation package as well as Style Builder, a tool to create your own unique styles.

New Section Features in SketchUp 2018 - Section Fills, Lineweights, Labels, and More!

08:48
Want to Support the SketchUp Essentials? http://www.patreon.com/thesketchupessentials http://www.thesketchupessentials.com/support In today’s video, I’m going to talk about using the new section tool in SketchUp to generate a floor plan with both lineweights and shading in Layout. New Tool Functions – #1 – Naming Sections In SketchUp 2018, you can both name your section cuts, as well as add a symbol to your cuts that is visible in your model. This way, you can keep your cuts organized and have a visual indicator of which cut you’re working with. #2 – Managing Sections in the Outliner In the 2018 version, you can now use the outliner to manage your section planes. Not only can you use it to manage visibilities of sections (which are on, off, etc), you can also use it to manage your section cut names and symbols as well. #3 – Adding section fill with Styles This is a feature that has been long awaited. You now have the ability in SketchUp 2018 to add fills to your section cuts using the style manager. You can adjust the visibility of fills, along with the color of the fills that you add. Hatching is still not available, just the ability to fill the interior of your sections is a great new feature! #4 – Adding section lines with styles This is another great new feature – you can adjust the thickness of section cut lines using the styles manager. This way, you can manage lineweights of the section cuts in your model. All in all, the overhauled section tools in SketchUp 2018 represent a great improvement in functionality from the previous version. 5 ESSENTIAL TIPS to Speed Up a SketchUp Model - The SketchUp Essentials #15

13:17
PLEASE LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE More SketchUp tutorials and resources at http://www.thesketchupessentials.com Check Us Out On - Twitter - http://www.twitter.com/easysketchup Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/thesketchupessentials Pinterest - http://www.pinterest.com/easysketchup/ Sketchup is an amazing tool for building 3D models. It's free to download, easy to use, and completely intuitive. In my opinion, it's the best 3D modeling software available right now. However, this doesn't mean SketchUp doesn't have some weaknesses. One of the things SketchUp really struggles with is maintaining high speeds when models start getting really big. The more faces, lines, etc there are in a model, the more SketchUp has a hard time running quickly. Really large, bloated models can take a lot of time to load and navigate. However, there are some smart 3D modeling tactics you can use to make your SketchUp model run more quickly. 1. Turn off shadows and fog SketchUp has several really cool tools for simulating sunlight and fog. However, these tools are processor intensive and increase load times. Turn these options off until you actually need them. 2. Use a lightweight style, like the default style Styles are a great tool in SketchUp for making your model look more artistic. However, as a tradeoff, when you use a style with a lot of different lineweights and visible points, it's just more stuff SketchUp has to render. Select the "Default Style" option, then go in and turn off thickened profiles for a faster loading experience. 3. Put face heavy objects on a separate layer, and turn them off when you're not using them. You may need some face heavy objects, like trees, in your model. However, you don't need to have them visible while you're doing actual modeling. Put these objects on a "Large Objects" layer, and turn this layer off until you actually need it. 4. Pick smart models from the 3D warehouse SketchUp's 3D warehouse is a fantastic repository of different models that you can download into your model. However, the tradeoff is that not all these models are modeled with smart modeling practices, leading to large file sizes. Select models with a smaller file size when working with items in the 3D warehouse, and realize that most objects you put in the background of your model don't need to be that detailed anyway. 5. Purge unused objects Often when working with objects from the 3D warehouse, you'll download models that come with a lot of extra leftover stuff that you don't really need, or you'll delete an object from the 3D warehouse and it leaves a lot of materials, layers, groups, etc. Use the "Purge Unused" item in the model info to delete this unused stuff out of your model. These are my 5 Tips for speeding up a SketchUp model. What tactics are you using to speed up your models? Leave a comment below and let me know!

Creating a Custom Style in SketchUp with Face Settings - The SketchUp Essentials #20

13:58
This week's SketchUp tutorial will teach you to use SketchUp's face settings to create a custom style to change the way your model looks. ♦SUPPORT ME♦ http://www.patreon.com/thesketchupessentials ♦Courses♦ http://www.thesketchupessentials.com/courses ♦Website♦ http://www.thesketchupessentials.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In last week’s video, we talked about creating our own style using SketchUp’s line options. This week, we’re going to talk a bit about the face options in SketchUp. There are a few different options that you can adjust regarding how faces look. The face options are located under the edit tab under the second box in the styles section. The first two options allow you to adjust the way that the front and back sides of faces look in SketchUp. For example, if you really want to make sure that only the front faces of objects are facing out, you can come in and adjust all the back faces to a red color. That way, if red is visible, you’ll know that the back side of a face is facing outward. The next section in this area we’re going to talk about is the face styles. There are 5 different options for your face styles. Wireframe mode shows only the lines making up your model – this means no faces are actually shown. Hidden line mode shows all your lines that are visible in a current camera angle while hiding any lines that are behind faces. No colors or materials are shown on faces. Shaded mode will show the colors of materials on all your faces, but no actual texture images will be shown. This means any faces with texture images, such as roof tile or brick will be rendered with a single, uniform color. This can make your model run faster if it has a bunch of high resolution texture images in it. Shaded using textures shows all textures exactly as they are, colors, texture images and all. Finally, display shaded using all same will render all faces in your model as your default front/back face colors. X-ray mode will allow you to show lines that are hidden behind faces. At the bottom, you can adjust your model to show transparency or not, as well as the quality of the transparency. Turning transparency off can make your model run faster. If you set your transparency quality to nicer, you can dictate how transparent objects are. Now I’m going to give you an example of what you can start doing with these style options when you combine them. This model is a model I just pulled out of the 3D warehouse of the empire state building. The only thing I did to it is add a bunch of rectangles to act as windows (so they’d show up in our style). Now, let’s go in and start by setting our model to shaded mode. Next, let’s go into our line settings and make a couple changes. Let’s turn jitter on, as well as depth cues, and add some extensions to our points. See how this lets you create a whole new look for your model? You can now export this image for use elsewhere. If you liked this video, please take a moment and click the like button down below. If you’re new around here, make sure to click that subscribe button for new sketchup content every week. Finally, please consider supporting me on Patreon. As you all know, this is my side gig, and I create these videos in the morning before work. However, a lot of the extensions and plugins I talk about aren’t free, and I could use a little help trying to afford them so I can keep bringing you great SketchUp content. Even if it’s only a dollar a month, every little bit helps. 4 Ways to Add Backgrounds to a SketchUp Model - The SketchUp Essentials #41

15:25
This video will walk you through 4 different ways to add background images to a SketchUp model! PLEASE LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE ♦SUPPORT ME♦ http://www.thesketchupessentials.com/support ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A lot of the time, when you’re working with a SketchUp model, you’re going to want to add some kind of background image. Usually when you do this, you’re trying to create some kind of geographical context, like adding an image of mountains, plains, sky, etc. This video will teach you several different ways of adding a background image to your model. The first is probably the simplest – just draw a face in the background and apply your background image to it. For example, if I have this house (house credit) on a ground plane, I can just draw a flat face in the background, add my texture, maybe do some resizing, and we’re good! I’d recommend putting this face on a layer so you can turn it on and off. The plus side to this method is that it’s very easy. However, the downside is often that it’s limited to a few camera angles. The next thing you can do is add a watermark to your image. Instead of adding actual geometry to your image, you can create a watermark in the styles section of your model using your background image. The positive to this is that it will always stay behind your model, even if you move your camera around. However, I’ve found especially for exterior models, it can be a bit difficult to get your scene set up so that everything looks natural. Plus, adjusting your image can be a little tricky as well. The third way you can do this is to create a curving background behind your model. This has several benefits – the first is that it allows you to adjust your camera angle because it covers so much area. The second is that if you render your model, you should get some reflection of the sky in your glass, making it look more realistic. The downside to this on is that you have to use a projected texture, so it can be a bit tricky to get your image to line up the way you want it to. The fourth way that I’m going to talk about is downloading a sky dome. A sky dome is basically a dome drawn in SketchUp with a sky material applied to it. The nice thing about a sky dome is it completely covers your model, meaning that there is no gap at the top – it’s like having a complete sky actually over your model. The downside to a sky dome is that it requires some UV mapping/advanced texturing to create (which we’re not going to get too deeply into right now). However, there are some sky domes you can download from the 3D warehouse to get your started. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ More SketchUp tutorials and resources at http://www.thesketchupessentials.com Check Us Out On - Twitter - http://www.twitter.com/easysketchup Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/thesketchupessentials Pinterest - http://www.pinterest.com/easysketchup/

CREATING A TITLE BLOCK for your Plans in Layout

In this video, learn the basics for creating a title block in Layout! Learn to save your title block so that it shows up on every page, as well as learning how to save it as a template for use in your SketchUp to Layout projects in the future! Let’s start by just drawing a very rough title block – line on the right, box at the lower right hand corner, then we’ll start adding some text. Before we do that, I need to introduce you to the concept of AutoText. AutoText is text that Layout will automatically fill in for you based on information that is set in your model – it’s almost like the text version of a component from SketchUp. You can see what AutoText information is available by going up to “File,” “Document Setup,” “Auto-Text.” These are the Items that are already in as AutoText, and you can adjust their values within this area. For example, let’s add our Address to our title bar. To start, add a text box with the value "Address" in it to your title bar. Now, change your address in the AutoText section. Notice that the text in your actual document changes to match what you’ve entered in your Document Setup. You can adjust the style of your text within the “Text Style Section.” Now, let’s add a logo in the upper right hand corner – just go to “File,” “Insert,” and find your logo image. In this case, we’re going to use the AutoText for "Page Number", along with a letter and a pair of numbers. You can add a page description section, dates, and other information in here as well. Notice that you can create a border around a text box by selecting “Stroke” in the “Shape Style” section. You can draw lines to separate your various sections, and adjust the way they look using the “Stroke” option in your Shape Style section of your tray. Now, let’s talk about getting this to show up on all your pages (or at least most of your pages). First, you’re going to want to select all of this. You can group it or not – I’d probably group it. Then, you need to add a layer for Title Block, and put all this geometry on that layer. You can check it by toggling it on or off. You should be able to drag it down near the bottom. Then, assuming you want this to show up on every page, you need to click the option for Share Layer Across Pages. This will result on this layer showing up in the same location across every page. You may want to click the lock button to keep from accidentally editing your title block. However, sometimes you have pages you don’t want this to show up on – simply turn the layer off on those pages! Now, let’s adjust our page numbering so numbering doesn’t start until after the first page. Simply go up to your Document Setup again and use the drop down to select the page you’d like your numbering to begin on. Finally, you can save this block as a template so you can use it in future projects by simply going up to “File,” “Save as Template,” and saving it under your “My Templates” folder. Niche Plaques Complete & Haunt Build Update - SketchUp Style!

07:52
The one where I finish making, painting, and applying the hot glue appliqués that were used to adorn the columbarium niche plaques. Some 38 plaques in all have been made and will be used to line the walls of the crypt room. And with this project's completion, it means this scene is largely done and we can move onto the next one. Props that were built for this room include two corpses that will be displayed in long, open niches; the sarcophagus lid with effigy; and now the niche plaques. Still to be built, of course, will be the one plaque that will bang open and shut, if the jail ever sends me or allows me to pick up the door lock actuator I accidentally had delivered to the institution, otherwise I'll need to order another one...which just may be quicker! But after the crypt room comes the baptistry, and there are a handful of props that need to be made, but before we get that far, I want to give an overview of where we come so far in the haunt build, where we are, and what's left to do. To do that, I turn to SketchUp, the free, online 3-D modeling software from Google. While there's a big learning curve in understanding how to use it, Paul Hallenbeck at MadCity Haunt helpfully made a 4-part tutorial that walks you through all the basics of the software, and most helpfully, shows you how to import an existing floor plan into the software to save time and effort in drawing it out. My SketchUp plans are simply the basics, giving you an overview of the haunt in a 3-D fashion, which I think helps visualize the design better. So if you want to create a similar 3-D model of your own haunt, I highly recommend Paul's easy-to-follow tutorials. Like this video?
