This video clip features basic techniques of Ssanggeom, or twin swords. Basically twin swords are difficult because most people are not ambidextrous. However, if you build up good foundation then you will be able to progress easier. Ssanggeom is not difficult but amusing.

Viking fight choreographers Kelle and Gernot Longbow reenact viking warfare in an authentic way. In this video they show you how. The Vikings claimed that their swords were indestructible. That's probably a bit of a stretch. But they must have been nearly indestructible to allow the Vikings to wreak so much havoc and destruction. Here Lucy Easton (Schola Gladiatoria SG5) and Matt Easton (Schola Gladiatoria SG1) consider which type of sword style is easiest to learn for beginners - specifically over the course of the first two months Sword fighting can be harder or easier to learn based on many factors, such as the weapon type, the system being studied and the teaching method. This is NOT a statement of what styles of swordsmanship are 'best', or what you should do. Every person wanting to get into HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) should choose based on their own preferences. Also, every person's experience in this will be different - some people prefer certain weapons and styles, some people find some weapons come more naturally to them than others. Not all people are the same of course. Schola Gladiatoria swordsmanship schools: http://www.fioredeiliberi.org

This match took place at the Blood & Iron historical martial arts school in New Westminster, BC, Canada. Although not normally thought of as "martial arts", the Western world has developed their own effective combat systems throughout the ages particularly what is referred to as "Historical European Martial Arts". The differences and similarities between the Eastern and Western approaches are fascinating and often overlooked in the larger context of studying "martial arts". While Eastern martial arts usually possess a spiritual or even religious foundation advocating certain ethical principles and ways of life, Western martial arts usually focus more on pure combat for sport, artistic preservation, and sometimes self-defense (originally for warfare). I’m not a martial arts expert but a fan of awesome fight choreography so I decided to delve a bit deeper and "research" some of the fighting styles used in certain fight scenes. List of movies and martial arts styles featured in order of appearance: 1. Fearless (Tiger Fist vs. Boxing, Qiang (Chinese Spear) Wushu vs. Lancing, & Jian (Chinese Straight Sword) Wushu vs. Fencing) 2. Ip Man 2 (Wing Chun, Hung Ga, & Monkey Fist vs. Boxing) 3. Game of Thrones (Qiang (Chinese Spear) Wushu vs. Great Sword) 4. The Protector (Muay Thai/Boran & Taekwondo vs. Capoeira) 5. The Legend is Born: Ip Man (Wing Chun vs. Boxing) 6. Undisputed 3 (Muay Thai vs. Dirty Boxing) 7. Dragon Blade (Dao (Chinese Saber) Wushu vs. Gladius) 8. True Legend (Drunken Fist vs. Boxing) 9. Born to Defense (Fanziquan vs. Boxing) 10. Hoero! Takken (Kyokushin Karate & Shorinji Kempo vs. Boxing) 11. My Rebellious Son (Jian (Chinese Straight Sword) Wushu vs. Fencing) 12. The Sino-Dutch War 1661 (Jian (Chinese Straight Sword) Wushu vs. Fencing)

This is a technique from the historical fencing manuals that may seem very odd at first. Many people say "why would you grab a sharp blade with bare hands, you're gonna cut yourself!" But with a firm grip it is indeed possible. There were good reasons for doing this in medieval / renaissance times of plate armor that was impervious to sword cuts. Half-swording allows gives the user more precise control over the point, which can then be driven into the gaps of the armor. Alternatively the blade can be grasped with both hands in order to strike with the crossguard or pommel (the so-called Mordschlag, or "murder stroke"). Or you could grip the blade to do various wrestling techniques. In this video I also give a hands-on (pun intended) demonstration of this technique in order to prove that it is indeed possible to do this without getting cut. Putting the off-hand on the blade is not limited to HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) by the way, it is also seen in Japanese swordsmanship, were sometimes the left hand is placed on the spine of the blade. The swords used in this video are the following: 1.) Albion Caithness http://ww4.aitsafe.com/go.htm?go=kultofathena.com/product.asp?item=ANS5&afid=28632&tm=14&im=1 http://albion-swords.com/swords/albion/nextgen/sword-medieval-caithness-xii3.htm 2.) Buddha Kalari, an academy of Kalaripayattu and centre for Marma has the distinction of keeping alive the great legacy of martial arts handed down for generations since 1924. This pioneering institution was the first traditional school in Kerala to offer training Kalaripayattu in the Southern style. During the last nine decades it has pioneered many schools of thoughts and practices and has guided the evolution of the tradition of Kalaripayattu. The centre has spearheaded the promotion and propagation of the tradition of Kalaripayattu by organizing many International and National level performances and workshops on Kalaripayattu and by running an year round training programme for local and foreign students at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, South India. Buddha Kalari also runs a traditional 'Kalarichikitsa' clinic specializing in Ayurvedic Orthopaedic treatments. The present Kalari Master Dr. C.S. Suchith represents the third generation of a family that has preserved the ethos of Kalaripayattu and Marma Treatment in its true spirit and value. Using Sword and shield in an efficient manner is considered to be the peak of perfection in Kalaripayattu. Various methods in the use of sword as a weapon of offence and defence, are being practiced today; but most awesome among these is the 'Puli Ankam' where the combatants fight like tigers. An extra ordinary control over the body, agility, a quick eye and a keen presence of mind are necessary for the mastery of the sword fight. Contact : +91 9847093549.

Without a doubt dual wielding was nowhere near as popular in historical times as it is in roleplaying games and other fantasy settings. How common or rare it was depends on the specific period and region but it was certainly done, mostly using a longer blade in the main hand and a shorter one in the off hand. To get a professional opinion I asked Richard Marsden and Lee Smith, two of the most respected and skilled instructors of Historical European Martial Arts, what they think about this topic. Of course the perspective of practitioners of various Eastern martial arts may differ. http://worksofrichardmarsden.com/ http://www.phoenixswordclub.com/ http://www.bloodandiron.ca/about/instructors ******************************************************************************** My favorite online store for buying swords (worldwide shipping): http://ww4.aitsafe.com/go.htm?go=kultofathena.com&afid=28632&tm=14&im=1 Some recommended knife makers on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/s/?_encoding=UTF8&bbn=3222119011&camp=1789&creative=9325&fst=as%3Aoff&keywords=knife&linkCode=ur2&qid=1416693524&rh=n%3A3375251%2Cn%3A706813011%2Cn%3A3222111011%2Cn%3A3222119011%2Ck%3Aknife%2Cp_89%3AKershaw%7CVictorinox%7CKa-Bar%7CMorakniv%7CTOPS%20Knives%7CColumbia%20River%20Knife%20%26%20Tool%7CBuck%20Knives%7CBenchmade%7CFallkniven%7CSpyderco%7CSOG%20Specialty%20Knives&rnid=2528832011&tag=skallagrim-20 Want to help fund future videos? http://www.patreon.com/skallagrim My Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SkallagrimYT

Nihang warriors showcase their Gatka skills at Kila Raipur sports festival in Ludhiana, Punjab, India. Gatka is the name of an Indian martial art associated with the Sikhs of the Punjab region. It is a style of stick fighting, with wooden sticks intended to simulate swords. The Punjabi name gatka properly refers to the wooden stick used. The word originates as a diminutive of Sanskrit gada, gatka is defensive as well as offensive. The style originated in later 19th century, out of sword practice in in two sub-style,called rasmi (ritualistic) and khel (sport) from the 1880s. The term gatka has sometimes come to be extended to,including the use of various weapons, more properly called Shastar Vidiya. Holla Mohalla,or Hola Mohalla,is the festival of Punjab. Celebrated over three days, the festival retains the character of fun and enjoyment that Holi has embodied. In addition to this,it is also a community festival that brings people together in an atmosphere of sharing and caring. It is also an occasion to remember the valor of the Sikhs in battling the enemies of the land. The festival day begins with early morning prayers at the Gurdwaras. The Guru Granth Sahib is ceremoniously taken out and bathed ritually with milk and water. Thereafter,it is placed on a platform and venerated. The Nihang Sikhs, who are part of the Sikh army that Guru Gobind Singh founded, exhibit their martial skills and daring through mock battles,sword-fighting displays, archery and horse-riding exercises. The Nihangs also splash color on the spectators, and everyone follows suit. Stories and songs about the life, valor and wisdom of the ten Sikh gurus, right from Guru Nanak to Guru Gobind Singh, are told and recited.
