The Business of Fast Fashion

Which brands are “fast fashion”? How to tell (in 4 points) ǀ Justine Leconte

06:51
Fast fashion means that the brands produce in countries where labor is very cheap because the laws don't protect the garment workers. The clothes produced are of poor quality and execution, and they get sold at incredibly cheap prices in "rich countries". Since they are trendy in design, they will get out of fashion quite quickly. In fact, fast fashion brands even release new collections every 2 weeks, to make clothes previously purchased... obsolete. How to tell if a brand is "fast fashion": 1. Look at the brands producing in countries and factories where accidents happen. These brands clearly don't care about where and how their clothes get produced... 2. Research to which larger corporations these brands belong. It is very likely that a huge corporation like Inditex (Zara, Mango...) uses similar production methods for all its brands. 3. Understand the mindset of the brands / corporations that belong to the fast fashion industry: if they outsource their productions to countries where labor rights aren't respected, it is probably not to be charitable. Then claiming to use organic cotton (as an example of PR action) just can't make it up for ethically questionable practices. 4. Learn the break down of a price tag. If a Primark t-shirt costs 5€ in retail, how much of that actually goes to the garment worker? Thumbs up if you liked this video :-) If you subscribe to this channel and click on the bell, you will be notified when a new video goes live! HOW TO AVOID FAST FASHION. Stop motion style!

03:14
A fun video and stop motion on my new favorite and sustainable alternatives to fast fashion. Fashion is one of the dirtiest industries on the planet. Fast fashion is a term that refers to the cheap clothing that mimics current fashion trends where the current trend rotates out in a matter of weeks. This is not a sustainable production and the clothes are made of low quality clothing that harm the environment and intended to last a short life ending up in a landfill. We need to rethink what we invite into our life, and finding sustainable alternatives is rewarding in a number of ways. Shopping minimally, then second hand and borrowing clothes is THE most eco friendly way of looking classy and saving the planet! How to shop for sustainable fashion | Justine Leconte

06:19
This video answers your questions from 3 weeks ago: How to know which fashion brands are ethical and sustainable? Where to shop for sustainable clothes? My 5 tips: 1. Visit the brand’s ABOUT section: are they being transparent about their process and about where the fabrics come from? 2. Google the brand: were there sourcing scandals in which the brand was involved? 3. Look out for certification symbols in online shops and check the symbols on the Eco Label Index: http://goo.gl/9KTKSr Examples: GOTS and FAIR TRADE. 4. Research by country, brand or production criteria on Eco Fashion World: http://goo.gl/DWMntR Example: ABURY, my friend’s label based in Berlin with production in Marocco: http://goo.gl/h2XE8m 5. Read blogs and websites about sustainable fashion. Here are a few interesting ones: Guide to buying sustainable, fair trade and vegan clothing: http://goo.gl/9oBYS0 Affordable fashion online: http://goo.gl/zWxn7d Sourcing directory for fashion: http://goo.gl/A3t2Y5 Ethical Consumer – the website of the magazine: http://goo.gl/NYHe8N And if you see a brand doing something wrong, say it! Some fashion trends in designer fashions will eventually wind up in museums. Todays fast fashion trends featured by many chain stores are disposable and will wind up being destroyed. Why? to persuade you, the consumer, to run to buy the next trend. Let's talk about vintage designers and then about fast fashion like Zara. I do a fashion show featuring my recent fashion purchases from Zara. After reading all that I have about fast fashion, I have changed my mind about buying again from fast fashion stores. A Feminist Perspective on the Fast Fashion Industry | Jeanine Glöyer | TEDxAUBG

15:46
More than 80 billion garments enter the market every year but rarely do we think about where they come from. Jeanine will shatter our perspective and offer a new meaning to the phrase “fashion victim.” Focusing on the ongoing trend of informally hiring women for labor-intensive work in the textile industry and linking that to women’s position in society, Jeanine will open our eyes to the behind-the-scene perspective of the fast fashion industry and provides us with a solution – the ecologically and socially sustainable fair fashion label Jyoti–Fair Works she created with the idea to bring joy to producers and customers alike. Jeanine first witnessed the working conditions in the textile industry during a voluntary service in India in 2008. Appalled by what she had seen, she developed a strong desire to learn about possible ways in which the exploitative structures of this industry could be altered. Having completed her Bachelors in International Relations with a focus on International Human Rights Law, she was curious to dive even deeper into the subject and thus specialized on global commodity chains and workers’ rights through completing her Masters in “Labour, Social Movement and Development” at SOAS – University of London. Convinced that a different approach to producing apparel is possible, she founded and is today leading the Fair Fashion Label Jyoti – Fair Works. Moreover, regularly organizing workshops, talks as well as lectures for pupils and students, she is deeply engaged in the debate on how structures of exploitation can be transformed in a way that every single person involved in the production of our clothes benefits. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

What is FAST FASHION? What does FAST FASHION mean? FAST FASHION meaning, definition & explanation

02:32
What is FAST FASHION? What does FAST FASHION mean? FAST FASHION meaning - FAST FASHION definition - FAST FASHION explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Fast fashion is a contemporary term used by fashion retailers to express that designs move from catwalk quickly to capture current fashion trends. Fast fashion clothing collections are based on the most recent fashion trends presented at Fashion Week in both the spring and the autumn of every year. Emphasis is on optimizing certain aspects of the supply chain for these trends to be designed and manufactured quickly and inexpensively to allow the mainstream consumer to buy current clothing styles at a lower price. This philosophy of quick manufacturing at an affordable price is used in large retailers such as H&M, Zara, Peacocks, Primark, Xcel Brands, and Topshop. It particularly came to the fore during the vogue for "boho chic" in the mid-2000s. This has developed from a product-driven concept based on a manufacturing model referred to as "quick response" developed in the U.S. in the 1980s and moved to a market-based model of "fast fashion" in the late 1990s and first part of the 21st century. Zara has been at the forefront of this fashion retail revolution and their brand has almost become synonymous with the term, but there were other retailers who worked with the concept before the label was applied, such as Benetton. Fast fashion has also become associated with disposable fashion because it has delivered designer product to a mass market at relatively low prices. The slow fashion movement has arisen in opposition to fast fashion, blaming it for pollution (both in the production of clothes and in the decay of synthetic fabrics), shoddy workmanship, and emphasizing very brief trends over classic style. Fast fashion has also come under criticism for contributing to poor working conditions in developing countries. The 2013 Savar building collapse in Bangladesh in 2013, the deadliest garment-related accident in world history, played a critical role in bringing more attention to the safety impact of the fast fashion industry.

Fashion's Crippling Impact On The Environment Is Only Getting Worse (HBO)

03:40
The fashion week tents have been packed up and the models sent home until the next collection debuts, but one deeply entrenched industry trend shows no sign of stopping: Fast fashion, which has become one of the biggest sources of pollution in the world. According to a recent report, the textile industry emits more greenhouse gas emissions than international shipping and aviation combined. And the amount of waste the industry generates, as well as how much water and resources it uses, is increasing. Since 2000, global clothes production has more than doubled, and the average person now buys 60 percent more items of clothing every year and keeps them for about half as long as they did 15 years ago. In the USA, over 85 percent of those clothes end up in a landfill. China, which produces 50 percent of the world's textiles, and imports the largest amount of recycled clothing, has been dealing with pollution from the industry for decades: Most recycled clothing from around the world is up routed there and turned into recycled yarn. But starting this year, China will begin implementing a ban on the import of 24 solid materials, including textiles. Nate Herman, the Senior Vice President of Supply Chain for the American Apparel & Footwear Association told VICE News things are going to get much worse. “They have cut the source materials for recycled fabrics. It will have a very negative effect on our efforts to make the industry more sustainable,” he said. But recycling clothes currently is extremely difficult — much of our clothing is from blended fabrics or synthetic materials, meaning that it is often more time and resource intensive to recycle them than to just produce new clothes. Some experts, such as Ellen MacArthur whose foundation is leading the charge on creating a circular economy for textiles and who estimates that waste generated from textiles is worth $500 billion a year, believes that the fashion industry needs to go beyond just better recycling. How companies predict fashion trends and kill individuality | Mahir Can Işik | TED Institute

08:17
Apparently, popularity can be predicted and companies are buying it. Increasingly, fashion brands are relying on trend forecasting agencies in order to create the “next big thing.” However, fashion buyer Mahir Can Işik says these predictions are putting creativity at the risk of irrelevance. (Currently, more than 12,000 brands get their predictions from the same agency.) Işik calls for a renaissance of self-expression and individuality in order to break free from the sterile suggestions of forecasters. About the TED Institute: We know that innovative ideas and fresh approaches to challenging problems can be discovered inside visionary companies around the world. The TED Institute helps surface and share these insights. Every year, TED works with a group of select companies and foundations to identify internal ideators, inventors, connectors, and creators. Drawing on the same rigorous regimen that has prepared speakers for the TED main stage, TED Institute works closely with each partner, overseeing curation and providing intensive one-on-one talk development to sharpen and fine tune ideas. How Zara Took Over The Industry Using Fast Fashion

04:02
Today, we’re going to look at the history of Zara, its parent company Inditex, and the fashion industry in general, to see how it became possible to create such a high churn rate in the fashion industry. An average American will throw away 77 pounds of clothing every year. And that’s true across the majority of the western world. That is two suitcases of clothes, just dumped. Zara’s first store opened in 1975, in a city called A Coruna in northern Spain. Owners Amancio Ortega and Rosalia Mera had wanted to name it after a favorite Greek film called Zorba the Greek, but a bar on their street had already beat them to the punch, so they settled for Zara, since they had already had the letters made for the sign. Inditex was set up in 1985 as holding company for Zara and the manufacturing plants. They went on to set up and take-over many other high-street brands that follow Zara’s format; such as Pull and Bear, Bershka and Stradivarius. They now have over 6000 stores globally. Zara’s early business model was to create similar copies to high end lines but at an affordable price. As they expanded through Spain, Ortega pushed the idea of instant fashion, where Zara could react incredibly quickly to new trends so they could put new lines on the shelves in a fraction of the normal time. -----------------Support the channel: Support this channel: https://www.patreon.com/alexberman SUBSCRIBE for more videos like this: http://youtube.com/alxberman?sub_confirmation=1 Check out our Digital Agency Marketing Podcast: https://itunes.apple.com/hr/podcast/digital-agency-marketing-1/id1200614219?mt=2&ls=1 Need lead generation or marketing support for your agency? The Pulse:Christmas Special: textile waste caused by "fast fashion" & organ donations in Hong Kong

21:35
Hello and welcome to The Pulse and Merry Christmas, if indeed you are celebrating this festival which, for Christians, marks the birth of Christ. More generally speaking it’s time to celebrate, hopefully, quality time with families and friends, and the joys of excessive consumption. Over the past few years, The Pulse has looked at some ideas for a more environmentally-friendly Christmas. This year is no exception. One way or another, it’s a season that can generate quite a lot of waste. Fashion, for one thing, is all about change and keeping up with the latest trends. So-called “fast fashion”, in which designs move from catwalk to retail to hit the trend particularly quickly, accelerates this process. It’s not surprising then that some local organisations have noticed that clothes form an increasingly large proportion of the stuff we throw away. Christians, humanists, atheists, freethinkers, not to mention followers of other religions, all have different interpretations of Christmas. It’s widely believed that the celebration of Christ’s birth around the winter solstice had more to do with the church latching onto pagan traditions than with an actual birth date. But whatever the origins, many people see this as the season to give. In October, 19-year-old Jamella Lo passed away from a lung infection after waiting two weeks for a double-lung transplant. That case highlighted the very low rate of organ donation in Hong Kong. At any one time, up to 2,000 patients are waiting for organ transplants here. Of the 170,000 registered donors, around half do not have their family members’ support. There are only around 45 successful transplants here each year, and often the problem is not technical but societal.

The FAST FASHION trap & how to escape | #whomademyclothes | Justine Leconte

Fast fashion is a quite recent phenomenon and it has completely changed the fashion industry. Here is my view on what fast fashion is, what the business model behind it is & what you and me can do, as individual consumers, to resist its negative effects and make informed decisions for ourselves. I had a lot to say about it so the video turned out quite long… forgive me! men's new fashion 2018 How To Improve Your Style Without Buying New Clothes Men's Style Trends

01:23
men's new fashion 2018 How To Improve Your Style Without Buying New Clothes Men's Style Trends What is fashion and what is style? Fashion is a popular style or practice, especially in clothing, footwear, accessories, makeup, body, or furniture. Fashion is a distinctive and often constant trend in the style in which a person dresses. It is the prevailing styles in behaviour and the newest creations of textile designers. What clothes were worn in the 1900's? In the early 1900s, people covered up more than we do today. Women and girls never wore trousers and women kept their legs hidden with long dresses or skirts. Men and boys often kept their coats, jackets and ties on, even in hot weather. People from every social class usually wore hats when they were What is the fashion for you? Fashion is about expressing your identity, showing someone who you are through your fashion choices and using your clothes to tell someone something about you. Or at least it is for me- I suppose for some people clothing is just about comfort or utility but for me it's about expressing mysel What is the difference between fashion and trends? Fads are novelty driven fashion choices. ... Trends have a much longer lifespan than fads. In fact, they can continue to be fashionable for years and even decades. The primary difference between a trend and a fad is that trends have the potential to be long-term influencers on the market What is the history of fashion? The modern industry, based around firms or fashion houses run by individual designers, started in the 19th century with Charles Frederick Worth who was the first designer to have his label sewn into the garments that he created. What is the definition of a fashion designer? Fashion design is the art of application of design and aesthetics or natural beauty to clothing and accessories. Fashion design is influenced by cultural and social attitudes, and has varied over time and place. What is the definition of style in fashion? What is the difference between fashion and style? What are the teddy girls? Dress? A dress (also known as a frock or a gown) is a garment consisting of a skirt with an attached bodice (or a matching bodice giving the effect of a one-piece garment).[1] It consists of a top piece that covers the torso and hangs down over the legs. A dress can be any one-piece garment containing a skirt of any length. Dresses can be formal or informal. In many cultures, dresses are more often worn by women and girls. The rise of fast fashion? The early to mid 2000s saw a significant rise in the consumption of fast fashion: affordable off-the-peg high street clothing based on the latest high fashion designs. With its low cost appeal driven by trends straight off the runway, fast fashion was a significant factor in the fashion industry’s growth. As affordable clothing became even more important in the entrance to the new age, brands had to find a way to keep up with their consumer’s new spending habits.[8] During the year 1999, department stores such as Macy’s, J.C. Penney, Kohl’s and more had sales totaling $230 billion. In the years that followed, that number began to fall. By the early 2000s the rise of online retail and in-store fast fashion caused department store sales to dwindle in sales in the wake of new styles being offered quicker than ever before by retailers.[9] Retail giants of the new millennium included H&M, Forever 21, and Zara. Notably, the retailer Target found major success in collaborating with various fashion designers for affordable designer pieces available for the average consumer.[10] This trend in fast fashion allowed shoppers to own designer items at lower prices, also allowing the acceptance and production of copycat styles.[11] Designers noticed their designs were being knocked-off, and decided to do something about it. In 2004, the retail giant H&M, a master in rolling out fast fashion, collaborated with fashion designer Karl Lagerfield to introduce a one-time collection which proved to be a huge success, as women flocked to H&M stores to own a piece of the designer’s 30 selections available in the collection. Style Challenge: Get Inspiration From Celebrity Style Icons? There are few things I love as much as celeb watching. It's my guilty pleasure. I live for fall TV premieres and winter award shows because of all the extra buzz around my favorite artists. And one of the best things about stalking your faves is seeing what they wear out! The Biggest Spring 2018 Fashion Trends From the Designer Runways

What is fashion and what is style?men dressing style|men jeans style 2018 fashion boys style denham jeans Fashion is a popular style or practice, especially in clothing, footwear, accessories, makeup, body, or furniture.
