Compurt Networks Lecture 10 --Delays in CN
Transmission delay, Propagation delay, Queuing delay, Processing delay are discussed
Round-trip delay time
In telecommunications, the round-trip delay time (RTD) or round-trip time (RTT) is the length of time it takes for a signal to be sent plus the length of time it takes for an acknowledgment of that signal to be received. This time delay therefore consists of the propagation times between the two points of a signal. This video is targeted to blind users. Wireshark Tip 14: Filter to Determine TCP Round Trip Times and Capabilities
This tip was released via Twitter (@laurachappell). The first two packets of the TCP handshake are critical in defining the capabilities of that connection. In addition, these two packets can be used to obtain a snapshot of the round trip time (RTT) between TCP hosts.

TCP Smoothed Round Trip Time (SRTT)
TCP implementations attempt to predict future round-trip times by sampling the behavior of packets sent over a connection and averaging those samples into a "smoothed" round-trip time estimate SRTT.

NYC Subway HD 60fps: R42 J Train Snowy Round Trip Railfan Window Ride w/ Annoying TSS (1/8/17)
READ FIRST: Ya want snow? Ya got snow! Enjoy this winter wonderland ride, for which I got hassled by a TSS (story below lol). Consist: (Broad Street) 4829-4828+4801-4800+4830-4831+4798-4799 (Jamaica) Table of contents: 0:00 to 1:03:30 - Broad Street to Jamaica 1:03:30 to end - Jamaica to Essex Story time (Yay!): So Jamaica-bound, a Train Service Supervisor boards @ Myrtle Av & starts chatting up the Train Operator. He peeks around & asks me what I'm recording, so I tell him that I'm trying to capture the snowy landscape. He sort of accepts that, & leaves me alone. The TSS then gets off @ Crescent to "investigate a situation," & I continue onward. The same TSS gets back on for the return trip after concluding his "investigation" @ Crescent. He makes his way from the rear of the train to the front to confront me again @ Alabama Av. He makes a statement along the lines of "Oh, so what you filmed one way from Broad to Jamaica & now you're going back to Broad? Who gave you permission? You need permission to do that." This is funny because he is just assuming. Not wanting to escalate confrontation, I calmly reply that I don't think I need permission & ask if I'm trespassing. Of course I'm wearing my Transit Museum shirt & ID badge since I'm technically on my way to the museum to supervise the weekly openBVE workshop there. He sees that & makes a brazen statement that "Museum isn't 'permission'", which is amusing because one, you don't need permission to film / photograph for non-commercial purposes while in publicly accessible space, which a train is, under MTA bylaws clause 1050.9c, & two, he again assumed I was using the pass as "permission" whereas it was more so a statement of "I know what I'm doing, this isn't my first rodeo" kind of thing. Anyways, the TSS goes on to say that he's "going to have to call me into Rail Control Center," to which I respond nonchalantly, "Alright, go ahead". The TSS then knocks on the cab door to get the T/O's call letters (necessary for incident report). 1146 Juliet; Parsons to Broad. But here's the catch (important); he fails to inform the T/O why he's asking. Now another important detail: the TSS now makes the call into RCC, not on his radio, but on his cell phone. He profiles me, & asks RCC if I need "permission to do this". RCC doesn't really care, so they tell him that I do. He hangs up & tells me this, in addition to the fact that police are going to pick me up for questioning further down the line. I acknowledge this w/ a shrug. He goes on further that I don't have to explain anything to him, & that he's just doing his job w/ the "see something, say something" mandate, which I absolutely despise specifically for the reason that these encounters even occur. To this I respond kindly, "Alright, that's fine. No problem, I realize you're just doing your job, etc". (although not very well, I might add lol). The TSS then leaves me & gets back off the train @ Myrtle. At this point, I have now determined that I will bail at Essex, reasoning that I came for the snow, & once I cross the bridge, there'll be no reason for me to waste time & go all the way to Broad. There's also a direct transfer at Essex for the F to Jay Street. Now, our train is departing Marcy & climbing the Williamsburg Bridge approach. THIS is where things get absolutely hilarious. As we're clearing the second timer coming out of Marcy, I hear the radio go off in the cab right next to me, so, still recording, I lean over to the cab hinge to pick up the transmission, since I probably figured it was about me. Sure enough, it's RCC calling into the train: "1146 Juliet Parsons to Broad, please hold at Marcy for police investigation." Almost immediately, the T/O becomes flustered: "RCC come in, what was that? I've departed the station; I'm already on the bridge." RCC: "Come in? Hold @ Marcy..." & so on. Then the conductor calls up to the T/O: "Did you call RCC? They're asking us to hold @ Marcy." T/O: "No I didn't. This is the first I'm hearing of anyone recording anything." This is because the TSS didn't use his radio to call RCC earlier (told you that was important lol). I'm dying at this point. We're rolling up the bridge, & I can still hear the T/O grumbling & cursing in the cab to his C/R "If they wanted me to hold at Marcy, they should have told me before I left the station." He then radios to RCC a final time "Do you want me to hold @ Essex for police?" Response was "negative.” We pull into Essex, I get off, film the train leaving, & make my merry way to the F train platform. All in all, the only things the TSS managed to accomplish here by calling me in was to not only hassle me, but cause confusion & delay w/ the train crew & probably waste the time of the police, who probably showed up on the platform @ Marcy only to see the train leaving the station. The moral of this story? If you see something (someone w/ a camera), don't fucking say anything XD. You'll just waste everyone's time lol. THE END.

ADVrider.it Motorcycle Trip: Around the Sahara with a Honda CBR 900 RR and a DRZ 400 PART 2/3
The CBR was on the paper half totally unsuitable, as stated at the start, and taking off with some 'delay compared to the plans, the season has become. In this period, the sand is hot, it becomes less compact, much more insidious to go with an enduro bike, let alone with half from the road, without dowels and rubber Moreover Office of luggage and supplies. But it was so inappropriate that motorcycle? Of course it was. Do not want to doubt it. But then? We had with us the desire to travel, to discover, to enrich the knowledge of the territory, its people, we had with us the awareness of the power that hides the desert, and which need to be compared. So in the end those dunes we pass.

NYC Subway HD: Bombardier R62A 7 Local Train Round-trip Manhattan-bound RFW (Peak Hour Congestion)
Shot morning of 1/5/15 (7:30 AM - 9:10 AM). Skip ahead to 42:34 for the forward-facing Manhattan bound trip. Tried to do some RFW fanning on the 7 this morning; left NJ extra early (6:35 AM Lakeland Bus from NJ) to make sure the Manhattan Bound Expresses were still running by the time I got to Flushing. Managed to snag a Manhattan facing RFW on 2141. As soon as we pulled into Flushing Main Street (around 8:15 am) all express service to Manhattan was terminated early due to signal issues in the tower. =_= Just my luck lmao. All trains ran local to Manhattan with about a 20-25 min delay in total run time (took us 50 min to get back from Flushing to Times Square, especially after dispatch sent a set into service that cut us off between Mets Willets Point and 111th street to help with the overcrowding past Woodside. Notice that it doesn't seem to do shit lmao; the stations past Woodside were still packed to hell). This would happen to me XPXPXPXP. Despite the slow ride, this does afford us an opportunity to watch the signal system at work. It'll be nice when CBTC finally hits the 7 line; heaven knows it needs it.

Bangalore to Pondy Round Trip & Four Modes of Riding!!! - DUKE 390
Bangalore - Salem - Villupuram - Pondy - Dindivanam - Gingee - Arcot - Krishnagiri - Bangalore We went on a Duke 390. Approx distance: 900 Kms. A few pit stops with scenic ambience. I won't recommend Bangalore - Krishnagiri - Cheyyar - Tiruvannamalai - Pondy Route since its mostly on a state highway and the road is very much damaged. If speed AND safety is what you want, Bangalore - Salem - Pondy. If Scenic beauty and average of 60 kmph is what you want, take Bangalore - Arcot - Gingee - Thindivanam - Pondy. Stay tuned for more!! Thanks for watching!!!

Round Trip to Ruifang
Another backlogged Taiwan video, consisting of footage that I filmed of the rail system when we were paying a visit to the city of Keelung's Maritime Museum. Synopsis: Starting the day at Neili, we find the mated pair of EMU729 and 728, wrapped in a special dressing to advertise Taiwan, on a service northward. From there, we move to Taoyuan. Here is a moment where the "similar yet different" nature of railroading is made apparent: the 12-car EMU500 set makes another appearance, and the northbound (foreground) express train @8:10 is the same service that closed out the "Opening Day at Taoyuan" video. However, the southbound track was suffering from a 10-minute delay on the date this was filmed, courtesy of mechanical issues on the express train @1:15 (for reference, in the Taoyuan video, it shows up @1:45, while the local service in the foreground here shows up @3:40). Since the museum is on the opposite side of the city from the Keelung station, we transferred a couple trains to end up in Ruifang, where the Pingxi Branch Line has a line that leads right into the museum grounds (which necessitated switching trains twice; once at Qidu and once at Badu). The local service that we transferred to at Qidu was one that we overtook on the way north, operated by EMUs 800 and 801, also in promotional wrap. There are only two clips filmed in Badu; starting from 9:10 the filming is in Ruifang. The clips from 14:50-16:33 are taken on the Maritime Museum station's platform, giving a good look at just how tight the confines of this branch line are. Private property borders the track on the other side of the station, and the tunnel barely fits the DR1000 railcars. Also a snippet of my brother's impatience to get home is included. Bracketing that is footage at Ruifang. This is the west end of the helper district for the North Link Line; though not all freights require helpers, there is one @10:00 that does. Even if they don't need helpers, their low priority means that Ruifang is a good holding point due to its relatively large number of tracks. Also of note is that the express train @17:40 is the same service found from 9:50-11:25 of the Ylian video, and the Puyuma that stops from 10:40-11:35 is the same service that my brother and I rode to Ylian on the day said video was filmed. The day took another interesting turn as the express train we rode from Ruifang was having mechanical issues, causing us to get off at Qidu. We planned to catch another express train going south, but at that moment a northbound express headed for Keelung arrived, operated by TRA's only active set of EMU1200s. Since the train was due for a 10-minute layover in Keelung before returning south, we decided to take the detour. Due to congestion, we were actually sent north via the Qidu yard tracks (by TRA policy I am not allowed to film any part of the cab and so I unfortunately have no footage of it), which gave us a chance to pace a set of DR2900s heading for the East Coast. @19:55 is another example of how cyclical the railroad can be. I am in the lead car of the EMU1200 set as it now heads south, about an hour total after we boarded it in Qidu. Lo and behold, the promotional EMU800 set comes into the station running northbound for Keelung again. @23:00 is one of the few night shots I have of Neili from the platform. I must say, whatever qualms I have about the EMU800's appearance, the stainless steel reflects the town's neon quite well. With one more shot of set of EMU700s making their stop, the trip comes to an end. Sure, they weren't the promotional set like I was hoping (as said set was on the service the night before), but that's part of what makes railfanning interesting; the high iron is never wholly predictable.

Pilots Reveal 16 Nuances That Make Your Flight Safe
How to Travel when Flying on a Plane? You’ll get some pretty unexpected and useful insider-knowledge directly from different airline crew members. We'd like to share them with you before you set forth on your next trip! Each profession has its own tricks of the trade that aren’t usually shared with anyone outside the professional circle. Aviation has always been a fascinating and mysterious line of work, and this makes it even more interesting to learn about all the secrets that we aviation outsiders have no idea about. If you’ve never heard of at least one of these facts, hit that “like” button! TIMESTAMPS Pilots are prohibited from having a beard 0:44 It's cold on planes for the sake of your health 1:14 Planes never fly in straight lines 1:46 It's better to wear sturdy shoes on a flight 2:33 Pilots and dispatchers aren’t always formal with each other 3:15 The average person will never manage to land a plane 3:42 Flights delays affect not only passengers but flight attendants as well 4:26 Pilots have to take turns going to the bathroom 4:50 Airplane food is bad, and nobody’s to blame for it 5:27 Comfortable clothes help you stay healthy 6:14 Pilots communicate with flight attendants through a bulletproof door 6:38 The smoothest place to sit is over or near the wing 7:28 There’s a secret signal if the plane has been hijacked 7:56 A hard landing is sometimes done on purpose 8:14 Cabin lights are dimmed during a nighttime landing for a reason 8:50 There’s only 15 minutes worth of oxygen in the masks 9:15 SUMMARY - Some airlines forbid their pilots from having beards. The reasoning behind this is that a beard can prevent an oxygen mask from securing to the face tightly in the event of an emergency situation. - If the air in the cabin is too warm, it can trigger this problem, so that's why the air temperature is kept cool. - Why curved lines? That’s because the Earth is round, but the map on the screen is flat. But what’s the zigzagging all about? That’s due to special flight regulations requiring pilots to stick to certain routes in order to have enough time to reach an airport in case of an emergency landing. - Take it from experienced flight crews from around the world: they beg you to leave your backless sandals and high heels at home and go for sturdier shoes. - There’s a tradition that dispatchers congratulate pilots on all holidays. Just imagine: around Christmas time, a pilot can have up to 4 flights a day, which means about 2,000 people wishing them a Merry Christmas. - Even if someone is a genius, hooked on realistic flight simulators, or ready and willing to follow all the instructions from ground control, he’s still likely to fail due to one simple thing: stress! - Flight attendants are paid only for in-flight hours. Time spent on the ground doesn’t count. The only thing that airlines offer is a small allowance for every hour spent at the airport. - When one pilot needs to use the restroom, a flight attendant must join the other pilot in the cockpit and wait until the first one returns from his bathroom break. - Tasteless airplane food is nobody’s fault but science. At high altitudes, our taste buds and sense of smell can play tricks on us. - When on a plane, go for comfortable clothes with breathable fabrics. It’ll help you tremendously when you’re trying to fall asleep. - Did you know that the door to the cockpit is bulletproof? It’s true! It’s designed to stop bullets and even small grenades. - The freshest air is near the front of the plane, and the warmest temperature in the back. - Pilots give a special signal to the airport when they’re landing: they leave the plane’s wing flaps up. It’s one of the ways to show that there’s something bad happening on the plane. - When you experience a hard landing in bad weather, it doesn’t mean that the pilot is a newbie or lacks the know-how. In fact, sometimes they do it intentionally. - Dimming the cabin lights helps passengers’ eyes adjust from the bright light of the cabin to the dim nighttime light on the ground. - There’s only enough oxygen in the masks for just a quarter of an hour, but you shouldn't panic. This is plenty of time for the pilot to take the plane to a lower altitude where you can breathe normally.
