On January 1, CMS rolled out the Home Health Value-Based Purchasing (HHVBP) program as a nine-state pilot, with a focus on reducing hospitalizations. The bottom line is that if home health agencies don’t reduce the number of unplanned hospitalizations during the first 60 days of home health, then they stand to lose a substantial amount of revenue – as much as 8% by 2022. With so much at stake, home health agencies need to embrace advanced technologies that are proven to improve both the efficacy and efficiency of the care they provide. Perhaps the greatest opportunity lies with remote patient monitoring, or telemedicine, which can positively affect 15 of the 24 process and outcome measures – reduced hospitalizations included – that comprise an agency’s HHVBP score.
