5 AMAZING Ship Launch Videos

03:19
Ship launching is the process of transferring a vessel to the water. It is a naval tradition in many cultures, dating back thousands of years. It has been observed as a public celebration and a solemn blessing. Ship launching imposes stresses on the ship not met during normal operation, in addition to the size and weight of the vessel, and it represents a considerable engineering challenge as well as a public spectacle. The process also involves many traditions intended to invite good luck, such as christening by breaking a sacrificial bottle of champagne over the bow as the ship is named aloud and launched. There are three principal methods of conveying a new ship from building site to water, only two of which are called "launching." The oldest, most familiar, and most widely used is the end-on launch, in which the vessel slides down an inclined slipway, usually stern first. With the side launch, the ship enters the water broadside. The third method is float-out, used for ships that are built in basins or dry docks and then floated by admitting water into the dock. In all cases, heavy chains are attached to the ship and the drag effect is used to slow the vessel once afloat, until tugboats can move the hull to a jetty for fitting out. The Ourang Medan In 1947 (or, 1948, according to some accounts), a disturbing distress call was picked up by two American ships at British, and Dutch listening posts in the Strait of Malacca. The message said, “All officers including captain are lying in chartroom and bridge. Possibly whole crew.” This was followed by a burst of indecipherable Morse code, then a final, grim message The men at the listening posts triangulated the message and determined it came from a Dutch freighter vessel called the Ourang Medan. A conscripted American vessel named the Silver Star was dispatched on a rescue mission. The rescuers entered a living nightmare. After hailing the Ourang Medan and receiving no reply, they boarded the vessel. Corpses littered the decks, all of them with the same terrified expression and their arms reaching out as if grappling with an unseen assailant. Even the ship’s dog was, its mouth curled in a snarl. As they investigated, finding even more corpses in the boiler room, the rescuers made a strange observation. Despite it being over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the air in the lowest part of the hold was extremely cold. None of the sailors could explain the phenomenon. They also couldn’t find any damage done to the ship itself. The crew of the Silver Star decided to tow the Ourang Medan back to port. However, as soon as they finished fastening the tow line, they saw smoke boiling up from the lower decks, specifically from the Number 4 hold. The boarding party barely had time to cut the tow line and return to the Silver Star before an explosion ripped through the vessel. The explosion was so strong, it actually lifted the ship out of the water before it disappeared below the waters of the Strait of Malacca. One theory as to what happened on the Ourang Medan is that it carried some form of nerve gas that escaped, everyone and causing the explosion. It doesn’t account for the strange cold down below, however. At any rate, we will probably never know for sure what happened. 9. The Carroll A. Deering In August 1920, the Carroll A. Deering set sail from Norfolk, Virginia with an experienced captain and a crew of 10 men bound for Rio de Janeiro with a cargo of coal. Its original captain, William H. Merritt, fell ill shortly after departure and was replaced by Captain W. B. Wormell. Despite this sudden change, the ship delivered its cargo on schedule and set sail to return in December. So far so good! Captain Jacobson aboard the Cape Lookout Lightship in North Carolina sighted the vessel bound for its home port on January 29, 1921. The Carroll A. Deering hailed the lightship and reported that the ship had lost its anchors. Captain Jacobson took note, but couldn’t report it because his radio was out. He later described the crew of the Carroll A. Deering "milling around" suspiciously on the fore deck of the ship. Two days later, the schooner was seen stuck on Diamond Shoals, a treacherous stretch of water. Rough waters kept anyone from reaching the wreck until February 4, when rescuers discovered the Carroll A. Deering to be abandoned. Two lifeboats, personal belongings, key navigational equipment, some papers, and the ship’s anchors were also missing. Despite an investigation by the fledgling FBI, no trace of the crew or the ship’s logs were ever recovered. 8. The Octavius In 1761, a ship named The Octavius departed London loaded with cargo bound for China. It reached its destination and took on another load for the return trip. By then, it was 1762. The captain decided to take advantage of unusually warm weather and risk an attempt through the Northwest Passage. Even though no one had been able to navigate it successfully yet. No one saw the Octavius for thirteen years and people assumed it succumbed to the Arctic. On October 11, 1775 the whaling ship The Herald, while working in waters west of Greenland, spotted a ship drifting along. They boarded her only to find the entire crew below decks frozen solid. The captain sat at his desk in his cabin, frozen stiff with pen in hand apparently in the middle of a log entry. The ship was The Octavius. According to the last log entry, dated 1762, the captain’s chance at conquering the Northwest Passage had failed and the ship was locked in ice. Six Months At Sea In The Merchant Marine

22:05
In this short documentary, I tried to answer some of the common questions that I usually get about shipping. The footage I took myself using fairly basic cameras that I could fit in my pocket while I was on the job as a deckhand. The story follows me on a six month journey around the world on a container ship which was on a run between New York and Singapore via the Suez Canal. This was my first time going to sea on a large ship so everything was relatively new to me, therefore please excuse the couple of shipping terms I misused (such as saying "license" when I should have said "credential"). I have been on many ships since and will continue to ship out for the foreseeable future. Thanks for watching. Oblique Icebreaker Baltika - Ice trials on 19 March - 10 April 2015

08:29
Developed by Aker Arctic, the icebreaking rescue vessel Baltika is the first ship ever built with an asymmetric hull that allows her to break ice not only ahead and astern, but also sideways. In this way, the relatively small oblique icebreaker is capable of opening a wide channel in ice. Completed in 2014, the new icebreaker was scheduled to undergo full scale ice trials this winter in order to confirm the vessel´s performance. Baltika departed from Murmansk on 20 March 2015 with the Aker Arctic team on board and sailed around the northern tip of Novaya Zemlya and across the Kara Sea to the Gulf of Ob, close to the Sabetta terminal area, to carry out the ice trials. The testing program consisted of performance tests in two distinct ice thicknesses in ahead and astern directions as well as in the oblique mode. Various operational tests were also carried out in order to determine the maneuverability and operational capability of the vessel. The thickness and strength of the ice was measured in the areas where tests were carried out. An automatic measurement system was set up to record ice loads on the ship’s hull through the whole three-week voyage which concluded in Murmansk on 10 April 2015. Although the ice conditions in the area were on the upper end of the vessel’s designed icebreaking capability and the ice in the Gulf of Ob was considerably stronger than typical sea ice, Baltika exceeded expectations and the required performance targets were passed with a clear margin. The vessel could break 1.2-metre level ice in continuous motion when proceeding bow first and could achieve a speed exceeding 3 knots in astern direction. The oblique mode, which had never been tested before in real life, also worked extremely well and the vessel fulfilled all the design requirements. During operational tests, Baltika also demonstrated excellent maneuverability and rubble clearing capability in the port of Sabetta as well as ability to penetrate heavy compressive ice ridges in the Kara Sea without ramming. According to Project Manager Mika Hovilainen who was on board the vessel during the ice trials, “Baltika’s voyage to the Gulf of Ob proves the exceptional operational capability of the oblique icebreaker concept in very difficult ice conditions. The vessel could operate in ice conditions that exceeded the design criteria used as the basis of the vessel concept. Baltika could carry out the same operations as conventional icebreakers with just half of the propulsion power as well as perform maneuvers which are not possible for any other vessel currently in service.” Baltika (IMO number 9649237) was built by Arctech Helsinki Shipyard (Helsinki, Finland) in co-operation with Shipyard Yantar JSC (Kaliningrad, Russia) based on Aker Arctic’s oblique icebreaker design , Aker ARC 100. The vessel is 76.4 metres long and has a beam of 20.5 metres, and has a diesel-electric power plant consisting of three Wärtsilä 9L26 generating sets with a combined output of 9 MW. Baltika is propelled by three 2.5 MW Steerprop azimuth thrusters, two in the stern and one in the bow of the vessel. The dynamic positioning system, which also includes the oblique icebreaking mode, has been developed by Navis Engineering. The vessel is classified by the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping and its ice class is Icebreaker6. In addition to icebreaking duties, the vessel is also fitted with a built-in oil recovery system. Baltika is owned by the Federal Agency for Maritime and River Transport of Russia (Rosmorrechflot) and operated by the Russian Marine Emergency Rescue Service (FGI Gosmorspassluzhba). * * * Music by zero-project (www.zero-project.gr); used under Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) 3.0 Unported License.

Would you sail to these destinations to check out and adventure through these abandoned places? 3 - Carrol A Deering This 5 mast schooner was built in 1911, yet sailed her final voyage only a few years later in December of 1920. When the cargo vessel filled up with coal and set sail from Brazil towards Virginia, no one knew the crew would never be seen again. In January of 1921, the ship was spotted by a lighthouse keeper, a crew member on the foredeck informed the keeper that the Deering had lost her anchors, but due to a malfunctioning radio, this message was never sent. Three days later the ship was found aground on Diamond Shoals off the coast of North Carolina. The Deering had been completely abandoned, the logs, navigation equipment and two lifeboats were missing. The kitchen appeared frozen in time, midway into preparation for the next day's meal. The US government launched an investigation but came up with nothing. Diamond Shoals is very close to Bermuda, the ship would have had to pass through the Bermuda Triangle to end up in this desolate location, causing many to speculate that some paranormal may have taken place which led to the abandonment of the Carrol A Deering. 2 - Teignmouth Electron This sailboat hit the waters in 1968, when its captain, the British businessman Donald Crowhurst attempted to win the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race, the world's first ever solo round-the -world yacht race. Donald lacked experience and began having troubles within days of starting the race. Donald pulled the ship off to rest along the coast of South America and began falsifying his records, making up chart positions for where he would have been had he been in first place in the race. Donald's intention was to re-enter the race after all the other boats had gone all the way around the world and scoop up first place for himself. He kept one logbook detailing his thoughts and the other was meant to be opened once he won the prize to ensure credibility. After 243 days at sea and providing month's worth of fake records sent in to the race organisers, a message informed him that nearly everyone else had dropped out of the race and he was a shoe-in to win, however, by then his mental state had declined dramatically. Later that year, the Teignmouth Electron was found in a state of disarray, abandoned and adrift. The detailed log books outlined Donald's deceit, as well as ramblings which detailed his derailment into insanity, including instructions on attaining transcendence. Donald's body was never recovered. Leaving many to wonder, did the troubled man take his own life, or could something else have happened to him out there, along on those cold waters. 1 - Mary Celeste On December 13th in 1872, this small two-masted sailing vessel entered the New York Harbor, she had a cargo of over 1700 barrels of Alcohol. But, it became apparent quickly that something was very wrong with the ship, the boat moved irrationally, despite the captain being known for his talent as a seaman. After two hours of attempted hails with no reply, the boat was surrounded and boarded. The out of control ship was found to be abandoned, all of the ship's papers were missing except the captain's log, with the last entry being dated as November 25th, stating the ship had passed the Azores. There were no signs of violence or struggle, though it was noted several times that the ship appeared to have been vacated in a substantial hurry. A six-month supply of food and fresh water was found stored in below decks. All of the crew's personal possessions as well as the cargo of the ship appeared untouched, after further investigation, 9 barrels of alcohol were found empty. Over the next 13 years, the Mary Celeste changed hands 17 times, with several tragic deaths, leading many to whisper that this ship was cursed. No one ever heard from the original crew again.
