How Do I Develop My Own Style?

04:48
These days everyone seems to be a photographer. In a world of literally millions of photographs posted to social media every day, how can you develop your own style and stand out as a photographer. Well the good news is the answer is pretty simple. The bad news is that it takes a lot of work… well bad news depending on how you look at it. Developing your own style takes practice and dedication, but it also takes dedicating yourself to your own work and shutting out the online noise from time to time. Thanks to Karen for letting me share her question with everyone online. Have a suggestion? Leave it in the comments! 10 Tips to find your photographic style. Is it important to have a photography style?

11:47
Do you think it is important to have a photographic style? I honestly think that the discussion of how to create a style in photography is a hindrance to the development of a young or new photographer. In short it’s a creativity killer and a topic that should not be considered by the photographer, but instead it should be left to those who view the photographers work to decide. I would define photographic style as something that you realize or become aware of after years of shooting and you look back at your work and realize that you have “habits” in your creative choices. It may be a type of lighting or post processing. Possibly using wide angle lenses more than telephotos or using wide angle lenses in situations where telephotos are generally considered the norm. It could be a preference for color or black and white. It may be as simple as preferring Landscapes or People. So my photography advice to anyone who thinks that they need to find a photography style or know their style…. STOP trying. STOP thinking about it. STOP listening to misguided people who tell you that you need a style and whatever you do…. Don’t define your style before it defines itself. Once you place a label on your work, you have created a set of rules - a box - that says you cannot step beyond that otherwise it doesn’t “fit your style”. If you want your work to remain relevant and interesting throughout your life and career, you have be willing to experiment, learn, grow, challenge yourself, adapt, solve problems – all of which is hard to do if you have a label that says you can’t. Seriously - is this idea of "having a style” really that important? Not at all. I have yet to meet the photographer who picked up a camera for the very first time because they were pondering the concept of style. I have also never met a photographer who told me they became passionate about photography because they wanted to have a style. Now - even though I think its not important - I know, people will still talk about photographic style. So if you are looking for some advice about how to develop your style and even how to know it when you see it, here are my photography tips for finding your photographic style. Develop Your Photographic Style

11:22
Do you want to develop your photographic style? In this video I try to answer the question what is photographic style and I share my approach for finding your style in photography. In my opinion self awareness is the key to developing a photographic style so I asked myself three questions: 1. what do I like to shoot? 2. why do I take photographs? 3. who influences me and what do I like most about their work? (OK, that's kind of 4 questions but you see what I'm getting at). By having definitive answers to these three questions I am finding it easier to develop a photographic style that is unique to me and consistent throughout my work. I invited fellow YouTube photographer John Haswell to join me in this video and together we explore if greater self awareness can start him on the journey of developing his personal photographic style. 3 Tips to develop your photographic style

04:00
Many enthusiasts are keen to develop a unique style. They shoot everything and want to specialise and focus in on a particular field of photography. Today I discuss the three key things I think you should consider to help you on this track. Remember, unless you choose to move into paid work - this should all be able pleasure, learning, fun and lifestyle. So I suggest honing your craft to compliment your lifestyle - so you are not faced with conflicts. No point being an urban street photographer if you live on a farm! What do you think? FYI, the thumbnail to this video is an abstract nude I took of a very slender young woman - lying on her side. ThatNikonGuy has been renamed to 'Matt Granger'. Photography Tips - Finding a Personal Photography Style 📷 DIY in 5 Ep 51

03:24
Have you found your own style yet? What sets your photos apart from the rest of Tumblr, Flickr, and Instagram? We’re going to give you a few tips to find your own photography style. For starters, you’ll never find what’s unique about you if you are constantly following and admiring the work of others. We all have people we admire when it comes to style. Whether they’re fashion bloggers, landscape photographers, extreme sport athletes, there’s always something about their imagery that speaks to us, it’s inspirational. And that’s the dangerous part. If you subject yourself to other people’s work without developing your own style, you’re bound to just copy it in some way. So, as scary as it might seem, unsubscribe from that Instagram feed and go out into the real world, you’re bound to find something that speaks to you. This next tip goes hand in hand with not following others. Imitation is not a personal style, and it’s not really flattery for the original photographer. Instead if you’ve found an image that speaks to you, figure out what it is about the image that impacts you and use that. Let’s say you have a picture by Ansel Adams that you really enjoy. Figure out what it is about the image that captures you. Is it the way the light reflects off the lake in one of his landscape images, or the textured clouds in the sky of another? You can take a piece of something and just experiment with it. Now, if you want to get better at something no matter what it is, practice, practice, practice! Photography is exactly the same way. You’ll need to shoot every single day to develop your style. That’s right, every day! When you first start out things might not look that great, your composition might be slightly off, but eventually you’ll develop a technique that works. Once you get to a point where you like about 75% of your photographs you might be on to something. Know the rules, then break them! Just like anything in life, photography has rules. Whether you’re talking about rule of thirds or other composition tips, white balance and color grading there are basics that you should follow to get the best possible images. It’s only once you understand those rules that you can go ahead and break them. Lastly, shoot for yourself. Shoot what makes you happy, not what you think others might want to see. Whatever imagery drives you shoot that. It can be still life photography, architecture, or whatever specific style speaks to you, just shoot it! Photography is a personal expression and a form of art. It should represent whatever you want to say. You wouldn’t want people telling you what car to drive or what shoes to wear, so don’t let them tell you what to shoot! Think of this also as personal development. It is very satisfying once you find your own style. You’ll have much more confidence as both a photographer and as an artist. If you found these tips useful, be sure to subscribe to see all of our upcoming tips and tricks. What are some of your favorite subjects to shoot? Let us know in the comments below. How to FIND your landscape photography STYLE

11:10
Finding your landscape photography style can be a rewarding experience by helping you understand what you love to shoot and it can take your work to the next level. Get a FREE trial of Adobe Lightroom CC and Photoshop - https://goo.gl/YznzDv Follow First Man Photography for the latest updates: Instagram - http://instagram.com/adamkarnacz My Gear - https://www.firstmanphotography.com/my-gear/ When you look at another photographers work, especially a good one, their style often shines through. Having a defined style sets you apart and creates a photographic identity that people will be familiar with and enjoy. If it is original, others will copy it and the attention that you draw will grow. You may have never thought about your style before and that is ok. I do not spend a lot of time thinking about it, but it is there. This video will give you some tips on how to find your landscape photography style and where it comes from. Subject and Location Firstly it comes from the subject you are shooting. With landscapes this very much depends on the location you have visited. I have become well known for visiting the Lake District so mountains are a big part of my style. Woodland or Cityscapes might be your thing but the location very much influences your style. Composition Secondly is composition. Some photographers become will known for the type of shot they take. Some may prefer very wide, big vistas. Whilst others might prefer closer in, more intimate shots. Some can’t resist getting their perspective very low and filling the image with close-in foreground interest. Others are now heavily into high perspective drone photography. I do a lot of long exposure photography which again sets me apart, especially once the exposures go over the two minute mark. Post-processing The third element is how you edit the images. This is where most photographers will really stamp their style down. The biggest element is the control of colour. Cropping, contrast, sharpness, clarity and white balance all play their part too and the combination of options are almost limitless. In the video I use Adobe Lightroom to show how the simple sliders can be used to create different styles. Your landscape photography style could come form just one, or all of these elements. The important thing is to work hard, experiment with lots of different things and then shoot what you love. By following your passion and doing what you love your photographic style will really start to shine through. It will also evolve over time as your journey progresses and that serves to add to your art and the story you are telling.

Find your photographic style - Take a photo walk

04:55
Visit http://www.imagemaven.com for more photo tips and a free e-course on digital camera menus and how to set them up. After you've mastered the technical know how of your camera and your photo editing software, you might be looking at ways to make your photos more interesting and creative. In this video I'm going to discuss taking photo walks to find and develop your own unique photographic shooting style. This is what my designer friend Siita has to say on the topic: http://blog.rivasdesign.com.au/why-style-trumps-happiness-why-it-pays-to-develop-your-own/ "Style is all about feeling great in your own skin. For many unique style is just beginning to develop. It's found by expressing yourself -- Defining what you feel, the way you look at the world, what you think and contribute. And the good thing is .. Style improves with age -- Constantly bubbling up from a well of inner confidence. Style doesn't need permission! Doesn't seek approval to exist. Style builds in bankable layers -- As it's expressed we gain confidence, openness and all sorts of fun in life! Style is your answer to feeling content while achieving your goals. Siita's handy hint! Dig deep find your style, work on it until the layers start to build. Then step out in style -- express yourself with confidence. Build your uniqueness from deep within." -- One idea on how to develop your inner style or funkiness is to go on a photo walk with a focused intention, be that to capture something that extends you, gets you noticed, gets you responding, makes you happy. Anyone can take ordinary photos. You need to take extra-ordinary ones. To make it easier, find a really interesting location to do a photo walk in. Work the scene * Forget the place itself * Instead, focus on a word and try to shoot things that describe that word - ie warm, sharp, smooth, hard, happy, orange, blue, the number 7. * Every time you see that word, literally or metaphorically, make an extraordinary photo of it. * Concentrate on composition * Concentrate on light * Concentrate on colour * Shoot at different angles than you normally would * Get close to the surface of your subject * Really describe it in photos * Feel it When you get home look at your photos and really see if they describe the word or concept that you chose. See what works compositionally, technically and emotionally. Go out again on another day and repeat the process. After a while you will start to see your style emerge. It may change over time and grow with you as an artist. There are many ways to develop your style. Find yours.

The Kubrick Files Ep. 5 - Where does Stanley Kubrick's style come from?

21:14
The first 100 people to click this link will get a 2 month free trial of Skillshare: http://skl.sh/CinemaTyler I’ve often wondered, why is it that Stanley Kubrick’s visual style seems to stand out as one of cinema’s most interesting eyes for storytelling? Kubrick’s unique style was formed in his photography. Today we are going to take a journey around New York City where much of Kubrick’s photographic work for Look Magazine was captured to see if we can recreate some of his photos. We’ll take a look at some of his photographic techniques that would later help him as a filmmaker and we'll look at his influences and hear his thoughts on photography in order to better understand how Kubrick became one of the most visual filmmakers in cinema history.
