Well hello and welcome to the first real 2minute masterclass in marketing. I say real - this is not a trailer - not a teaser - not an introduction - not a contents page. It's a real masterclass in real marketing. What is marketing? What's marketing for? What can marketing do? And what can marketing do for me and for you? Marketing - as the great Phil Kotler - the very greatest academic marketer of the 20th century wrote - is the link between a society’s needs and its pattern of industrial response. That's quite a claim for marketing. But so is what Regis McKenna said memorably - marketing is everything. Certainly, without marketing a business has no Income. Without income a business dies. Without income a business is not born. So, without marketing a business dies. Without marketing a business is not born. No business no jobs. No jobs no careers. No prosperity. Nothing. No marketing - nothing And yet - as we will learn on this course in marketing — marketing is merely a set of tools. A toolbox. When mankind lived in caves marketing was a simple set of tools. In the 21st Century it has developed into a highly sophisticated toolkit — a kit of mindboggling complexity. But it is still just a toolkit. I can hear the wheels turning. You are thinking how can a box of tools - a box of tricks cynics will say present itself as the link between society and its productive capacity - everything and at the same time a mere toolkit. And what does that mean to me? Well, every tool must have a purpose. A tool is never an end in itself. A hammer is not an end in itself. It can be for banging in a nail to hang your coat on. A hammer can also be for tapping the back end of a chisel - which in turn gives shape to stone or wood. In the hands of a stonemason the hammer and chisel built gothic cathedrals. In the hands of Michelangelo, they shaped marble statues of great beauty and incalculable value. The purpose of a toolkit is always to create something of value — high value or low value — but always something of value. And the purpose of the marketing toolkit is to create value - value which can be exchanged with other humans for other values. So, what has that got to do with you? What has that to do with me? Well, the space in which the value created by marketing resides is what we have come to label a brand. And that brings us to the central topic of brand me. Well, hello and welcome to another masterclass. So, what we label marketing is a toolkit which in the hands of a marketer creates value for a brand. As the sculptor creates a tangible work of art with his tools so the marketer creates value for a brand. The precise nature of this value? Who benefits from this value? How does the value build over time? How is it created - these are all core issues for anyone who plans to be a successful and effective marketer. And we will dig deep into these issues in future classes. But first of all, what is this brand thing? And what's it got to do with me? I would suggest the best way to think of a brand is as a name - a label perhaps. When you go to a store or purchase something on line your first thought is generally not of a brand but of a product. Our thought process usually starts with a need or desire to buy and use, enjoy, experience a product. Let's say I need to wash my hair. To do so I need shampoo. That's how most of us English speakers describe a product for washing our hair. For cleaning our teeth it's mostly a toothpaste. Shampoos are products. Toothpastes are products. But what ends up on our hair or our teeth is almost always a brand. The shampoo we need morphs into the Pantene, Head and Shoulders Herbal Essence we buy. The toothpaste becomes Crest, Oral B, Colgate. An old dude wiser than I once said that we buy products, but we choose brands. Pantene is the name given to a particular shampoo. Crest is a name for a particular toothpaste. A Big Mac is a name for a particular hamburger. If you think of a brand as the name on a label and what the name signifies — what it stands for in your mind - you will have a pretty clear idea of what is a brand. When we say that the purpose of the marketer is to deploy the marketing toolkit to create and build the value of a brand and that the brand is where the value is stored - you will know what we mean by a brand. The marketer of Pantene has one clear purpose - to create and build the value of Pantene. The marketer of Crest has one clear purpose to create and build the value of Crest. The marketer may be described in this context as manager of the brand Pantene or Brand Crest. So back to our first question what has this to do with me? I'm not a shampoo — 1m not a toothpaste — 1m not a brand for heaven's sake. Well yes you are and more of that in the next masterclass.
