JMX: Much More Than Just Application Monitoring

55:43
You have probably heard of Java Management Extensions (JMX) as the enabling technology behind JVM profiling tools such as JConsole and VisualVM that are part of JDK 6 and later. But did you know that using JMX, part of the Java SE platform, is a lightweight way to manage any resource (such as hardware, networks, storage, operating systems, middleware, and applications)? In this session, you will learn about • The JMX architecture • Managing a resource in JMX, with a code example • JMX notifications • JMX connectors (RMI for remote clients and WS-Man for Web services clients) • Protocol adapters (HTML and SNMP) • JConsole and VisualVM, the "out of the box" JMX clients for JVM monitoring • Practical applications of JMX in the real world • JMX-enabled Java products" Copyright © 2013 Oracle and/or its affiliates. Does Your Job Scheduler Make Good Decisions? The Importance of Job Queues.

05:45
Learn which job queue features are important in a workload scheduler. For more info: http://www.helpsystems.com/skybot/resources/articles/job-scheduler-job-queues There are a few qualities you want everyone working within your company to have. They should be able to prioritize a workload, utilize resources effectively, and shift tactics based on a changing situation. These traits are as important in your workload automation solution as they are in your employees. In this episode of “No-Stress Job Scheduling,” Jared Dahl introduces us to job queues and the job queue features your enterprise scheduling software should include to allow it to make the best decisions about when to execute each job. What is a Job Queue? At some point your enterprise job scheduler decides to run a job. This could be because it’s a certain time of day or because some other requirement has been met. The scheduler then puts the job into a job queue, where it waits until the scheduler decides to execute it. There are many reasons the job may not be executed immediately. Solace's MQ Messaging Appliance

02:04
Solace's high-performance messaging appliance enables MQ-style messaging that's faster and less difficult to deploy and manage than software-based alternatives. Messages are queued within the appliance to avoid the latency of copying to disk and the use of discrete TCP connections means individual consumers are served without ever impacting the performance of others. The turnkey operation of an appliance reduces the cost and complexity of achieving failsafe MQ-style messaging. http://solacesystems.com/solutions/high-performance-messaging-middleware/mq-messaging/

System Design: Publish Subscribe vs. Request Response

11:25
Microservices benefit from loose data coupling, which is provided by a publish subscribe model. In this model, events are produced by a publishing service and consumed by downstream services. Designing the micro service interactions involves event handling and consistency checks. We look into a pub-sub architecture to evaluate it's advantages and disadvantages compared to a request response architecture. This type of architecture relies on message queues to ensure event passing. An example would be rabbitMQ or Kafka. The architecture is common in real life scenarios and interviews. If there is no strong consistency guarantee to made for transactions, an event model is good to use in microservices. Here are the main advantages: 1) Decouples a system's services. 2) Easily add subscribers and publishers without informing the other. 3) Converts multiple points of failure to single point of failure. 4) Interaction logic can be moved to services/ message broker. Disadvantages: 1) An extra layer of interaction slows services 2) Cannot be used in systems requiring strong consistency of data 3) Additional cost to team for redesigning, learning and maintaining the message queues. This model provides the basis for event driven systems. We will get to it next! Oracle SQL Tutorial 30 - UTF-8 and UTF-16 Character Sets

04:01
A few videos ago we discussed UTF-8 and UTF-16 encoding, but when we are working with a database we do not worry about encodings as much as we do character sets. That's because a specific character set is going to have a specific encoding. The reason I am making this video is to introduce you to the most common character sets and to teach you the differences. That’s because as we go into the national character sets we need to understand the information taught in this video. So the first character set I am going to teach you about is AL32UTF8. AL32UTF8 is a character set that uses the uff-8 encoding and each character can take up to 4 bytes with the utf-8 encoding. There is another character set (not encoding) called utf8 (no hyphen) which is also encoded with UTF-8. This can be a little confusing because UTF8 is the name of an encoding and a character set, but bear with me. Both of these character sets are UTF-8 encoded, but UTF8 uses an older version of UTF-8 encoding. Generally, they work about the same, but the way certain characters are stored is slightly different, specifically way certain characters are stored is slightly different, specifically what are known as supplementary characters, which take up 4 bytes. The max size for a UTF8 character set is 3 bytes, as they do not directly support the supplementary characters as 4 bytes but instead store them across 2 groups of 3 bytes each. Oracle recommends that you use AL32UTF8 for all future development instead of the archaic UTF8 character set. There is another character set that you should know about, and that is AL16UTF16, which uses the UTF-16 encoding. Watch my video over UTF-8 and UTF-16 to learn more about UTF-16. Lastly, there is a character set known as UTFE, which uses an encoding known as UTF-EBCDIC. This is like a super archaic character set, and I'm not even going to talk about it. I thought I would at least mention it as it is going to come up a bit in the next video's topic. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Support me! http://www.patreon.com/calebcurry Subscribe to my newsletter: http://bit.ly/JoinCCNewsletter Donate!: http://bit.ly/DonateCTVM2. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Additional Links~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ More content: http://CalebCurry.com Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/CalebTheVideoMaker Google+: https://plus.google.com/+CalebTheVideoMaker2 Twitter: http://twitter.com/calebCurry Amazing Web Hosting - http://bit.ly/ccbluehost (The best web hosting for a cheap price!)

Highly Available JMS with WebLogic: Store and Forward

13:44
Sr Principal Product Manager Jeff West discusses WebLogic JMS Store and Forward and shows a live demo. The SAF service enables WebLogic Server to deliver messages reliably between applications that are distributed across WebLogic Server instances. For example, with the SAF service, an application that runs on or connects to a local WebLogic Server instance can reliably send messages to an endpoint that resides on a remote server. If the destination is not available at the moment the messages are sent, either because of network problems or system failures, then the messages are saved on a local server instance, and are forwarded to the remote endpoint once it becomes available To download the code and see how to set up the project, check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LRKasiAlpA For more information on configuring and managing Store and Forward, please check out the WebLogic documentation here: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E12840_01/wls/docs103/saf_admin/index.html

How To Do Capacity Planning

26:47
Most IT organizations tend to manage system performance in a reactionary fashion, analyzing and correcting performance problems as users report them. When problems occur, hopefully system administrators have tools necessary to quickly analyze and remedy the situation. In a perfect world, administrators prepare in advance in order to avoid performance bottlenecks altogether, using capacity planning tools to predict in advance how servers should be configured to adequately handle future workloads. Watch as capacity planning expert Jon Hill explains the 3 crucial steps of successful capacity planning. Hill then performs real world demonstrations that detail each step using TeamQuest Performance Software. If you're in the capacity management arena or just want to know more on how to efficiently manage IT infrastructure performance; this video is a must see.

https://goo.gl/k4bU3F The purpose of this assignment is to get you programming as soon as possible and to try out the queue structure. The application is a set of oracles (oracle0, oracle1, …, oraclen-1) whose job it is to answer questions. Each oracle always answers in the same way no matter the question (answer[0], answer[1], …, answer[n-1]). The questions and answers are both read from files. Each oracle has a queue for questions, creating n queues total. The questions are then randomly assigned to an oracle and placed in that oracles queue. After all questions are assigned, the oracles start answering the questions in a round robin fashion. This means that oracle0 answers its first question from its queue, then oracle1 answers its first question from its queue, and so on until every oracle has answered its first question (or not answered if the queue is empty). This process is repeated with every oracle answering their second question in the same order, and so on until all the queues are empty. However, you like to get multiple answers to all of your questions, so you decide to resubmit all of your questions to the oracles to see if you get a different answer. The assignment of questions and reading of the answers should be done in the same way. The first time you submit your questions, you should use your ArrayQueue implementation and the second time you should use your ListQueue implementation. Problem Definition/Examples This homework assignment is an application of queues and is designed to help you familiarize you with basic data structures. The assignment revolves around the list of questions read in form a file that need to be assigned, at random, to an oracle. After the questions are assigned, the oracles should each take turns answering questions as described above. Each of the oracles will answer all the questions in the same way (i.e. the oracle will give the same response no matter the question posed to it.) The program should output the oracle’s response and the original question. For example, if the question “What is your quest?” is submitted to the oracle who always responds “To seek the holy grail,” the program should output What is your quest?: To seek the holy grail Your program should successfully submit all questions to an oracle and print the answers in order. Given Material There are four java files and two text files provided as part of the assignment. They are commented for the Eclipse IDE to explain the behavior of the provided code. Utility.java The Utility file is provided to deal with the file reading and random number generation because they are not part of the course. This file should not be modified. The init methods initializes utility and sets up the file reader and random number generator. This method is sufficient initialization and calling a constructor on Utility is unnecessary. The readQuestions/readAnswers methods return the files questions.txt and answers.txt as arrays of strings. The random function will return a random number between 0 and the parameter number. This will be useful for assigning questions to oracles. You will call it to find out to which oracle a questions should be assigned.

Using HBase as a Message Queue

26:50
Box's events API powers its desktop sync experience and provides users with a real-time, guaranteed-delivery event stream reflecting all of the activity happening inside their accounts. To support this functionality, the team at Box chose to leverage HBase to store and serve a separate message queue for each of our 30+ million users. This talk will cover how the team implemented queue semantics on top of HBase, how they were able to replicate our queues between clusters to enable transparent client failover in the event of a complete HBase cluster outage, and why they chose to build a queuing system on top of HBase rather than leveraging a pre-existing system. Field Guide to Java Collections

59:18
This session presents a survey of the principal families (list, set, map, and queue) of the Java collections ecosystem and their major and minor members. It examines differences between the collection families and family members, with special attention to the preferred environment of each collection species. Exotic, rarely seen creatures such as SynchronousQueue and ConcurrentSkipListMap are also included. The discussion of the recent evolutionary advances to collections and insights from the fossil record will inform and inspire all those who delight in these most ubiquitous of Java classes. What is Oracle Real Application Cluster - IT Shorts

01:31
What is Oracle Real Application Cluster - IT Shorts You go to a bank. And there is a teller. Actually there is only one teller. What happens? All the people wait in line. The teller acts as an interface between the client and the bank's documentation system. Right? Now imagine, there are two tellers. The queue can move faster. Why? Because two tellers can serve more people than one teller in a given time. However, both the tellers would access the same bank's documentation system. Now, imagine a regular, standalone Oracle database system. One database server, Talking to one storage device where the database is stored. And that server serves the clients. Now, let me add one more database server. And make this server to access the same database stored in that same storage device. Now, two servers can serve those clients more efficiently. If one server goes down, the service is still online. Because the other is still serving. This is called Oracle Real Application Cluster. Oracle Real Application Cluster can address scalability and high-availability requirements of an organization.
