The sustainable wardrobe: natural fabric selection.

1248 ratings | 16852 views
Having a sustainable wardrobe is no easy feat. Today we will look into the fabrics we choose and how they impact the quality of our clothes as well as the environment. Where do we start? I think we can start from understanding what fabrics we find in the shops, how they are made and what are the eco-friendly alternatives. This method will save you money and make you look your best. - while saving the planet - http://wonder-wardrobe.com/ Make the most of what you already have in your wardrobe (FREE CLASS): https://wonder-wardrobe.com/free-class Watch next episode about semisynthetic fabrics. http://wonder-wardrobe.com/blog/sustainable-wardrobe-wood-fabrics ★ Facebook: http://facebook.com/wonderwardrobecom ★ Instagram: http://instagram.com/dariaandronescu ★ Pinterest: https://de.pinterest.com/dariaandronescu/ Thank you for watching!

Hello Daria, I'm a bit of a fashionista with a slim buget but a good eye for quality and value. I have always loved fashion and enjoy it as a serious hobby. I would like to prepare a Fall-Winter board for pieces that I own and a few new ones that I will add for my new season capsule. I work in the medical industry, socialize with friends. How many items should I have in my capsule including bags. Also, I wear black, navy, gray and white. Can I add yellow or orange or will that look weird? Please help thank you!
Karl Craddock (1 month ago)
You are an amazing person I love you.
Patriot Jefferson (2 months ago)
I'm so glad I took the time to look at your channel to see what videos you had. I LOVE this video! I wish more designers chose NATURAL MATERIALS. Synthetics are basically made if chemicals, bad for environment & can easily melt or catch on fire, not safe.

...very nice video. It helps) 🙏🙏

Thank you so much for sharing, I’m currently trying to grow my clothing label which I want it to be ecofriendly. I have a question tho. What about ramie fabric? Is it included as linen or different?
daniel ong (2 months ago)
I love natural fibers. can you tell me what your thoughts are on Rayon fibers? I know they've been using that practice on wood, bamboo and even hemp nowadays to make the fibers softer. How do you feel about them?
Daria Andronescu (2 months ago)
You can learn about Rayon fabric in this video: https://youtu.be/UypCBi4UCAc ;)

Also what if the natural fiber is 95% & 5% elastane? can it be recycled & is it biodegradable?
Komal Abad (3 months ago)
Hi! Daria! I love your videos they are very informative & precise ..just had a doubt.. what if the fabric is a blend of natural fibers? Is it sustainable & biodegradable then?
Komal Abad (3 months ago)
Daria Andronescu thanks .. please tell me what if natural fibre is 95% and 5% elastane? Can it be recycled and biodegradable?
Daria Andronescu (3 months ago)
A blend of natural materials is biodegradable but can’t be recycled, so I would say it’s more sustainable than a blend of synthetics.
Lorelei (4 months ago)
Hello, Daria. Have you by any chance heard of unconventional fibers such as nettle? I am very interested in natural fibers and theese seem to be most convenient. Thank you. Great video!
MELINA LOBO (4 months ago)
Thanks Daria, this video was very informative. I am trying to be more sustainable, and i know i need to start with my closet. and because i am not a Minimalist wardrobe kind, i thought it will be difficult. But its not, I got great tips from here!
Daria Andronescu (4 months ago)
Glad to hear that! It’s not difficult at all, it just takes time. You can’t just change your wardrobe in one day, so be patient ;)
Gitte Van de velde (4 months ago)
What about materials that are blended between natural materials? Grana has some items that are made of a blend of cotton and silk, while that can't be recycled, they are biodegradable?
Daria Andronescu (4 months ago)
Yes, they can’t be recycled but will biodegrade eventually

It’s alarming to learn that we should avoid blended fabrics. So many garments are made of a mixture of différent fabrics!
Sarah Chaprobin (1 year ago)
A really informative video. Thanks!
Прекрасно, что вы затрагиваете тему непродуманного употребления и его вреда на окружающую среду. Спасибо! Вы понимаете какие бренды употребляют экологичные способы производства?

Wow! Thank you so much for making this type of videos, I feel there's not enough discussion about sustainable fashion and the impact that the production of clothing has on the enviroment . Just out of curiosity, when you mention the production, does it include the process of dying the fabrics? I'd like to learn more about this. Also, are there any books/ readings you might suggest me? I'm really looking forward expanding my knowledge on sustainable fashion. Thank your!
Indie lane (1 year ago)
Let me tell you that youre the only one who talk about this topics on youtube not like other girls who only say... buy this or that. Congrats i love your chanel greetings from mexico :D
Daria Andronescu (1 year ago)
+Indie lane thank you! Yes I am more about ‘how to buy less and wear more’
TheEllaellos (1 year ago)
Can one build a whole wardrobe made of sustainable materials and still look modern?
TheEllaellos (1 year ago)
Thanks so much for your reply. I only very recently became aware of/interested in sustainable fashion. Right on time I would say, as I was really getting fed up with my polyester-filled wardrobe! Polyester is everywhere, even in the more expensive brands! I ended up buying all those items over the years, because I loved their design and couldn't find a better equivalent. I am now learning to say NO to polyester even it's coming from my favourite brand(s). Apart from it beeing bad for the environment it's also not pleasant to wear and it gets smelly very quickly so it needs to be washed more often!
Daria Andronescu (1 year ago)
I think, YES, it's totally possible. The capsules I show you and the ones I create for my clients include only sustainable materials. I always check what the items are made of first, and if it's something bad, I won't choose it, even if the item fits well or is crazy beautiful. Next time I want to show you a capsule example paying more attention on choosing sustainable fabrics. So stay tuned ;)
safkie (1 year ago)
So informative, thank you for sharing! By the way could you make a video on maintaining clothes properly? How to prevent or fix wool pilling, choosing chemical or classic cleaning for different fabrics etc? I'm not really sure if I do these things right (I've actually ruined a few sweaters so far!) and I guess it's good to know such things when planning a small long-term wardrobe
Daria Andronescu (1 year ago)
Yes, I can make a video like that. I also believe it's important to know how to care about your clothes so they can serve you longer. Thanks for your suggestion! ❤️
Romashkanatty (1 year ago)
Do you never buy clothes from mixed fabrics? Probably it's very tough
Romashkanatty (1 year ago)
Daria Andronescu Good! And anyway I think it's better to take baby steps than do nothing. Honestly all of this information scares me too much. I'm a mess :(
Daria Andronescu (1 year ago)
+Romashkanatty no, I don't buy mixed fabrics anymore. But I've made some bad choices in the past before I knew all of this. Now I pay more attention to what I choose to wear. It's not that hard.
Kirstin Piche (1 year ago)
Thanks so much for the information. I had no idea wool and cashmere had such a big environmental impact. I love forward to the next episode.
Sheri Sanders (1 year ago)
Good information, however, it is not cruelty free. Could you go into more depth regarding cruelty free fabrics that would also be sophisticated and sustainable?
Keyra Martinez Dunn (1 year ago)
Daria, excellent informative video. I love to learn about this side of fashion specially because I am trying to evolve into a more sustainable and eco-friendly wardrobe. Currently pregnant (in my 2nd trimester) so do you have any ideas of eco friendly maternity style ideas you can recommend?
Andrenna Taylor (1 year ago)
This video was eye-opening! I will think twice next time I buy a mixed fabric at H&M because the thought of it not disintegrating for up to 200 years is so upsetting!

Daria Andronescu (1 year ago)
+Y B Hi! Have you seen this one? https://youtu.be/hzZ5WjNVEXY
Elle (1 year ago)
Hi Daria, unfortunately peace silk will still result in some harm to animals as the population of silk worms needs to be eventually curbed/culled as not killing them will result in a population too big to manage. So perhaps it's not the best choice for vegans/vegetarians etc.
One of the best video on channel. Daria, please make it clear, are theese brands in your issue called Eco brands using recycled or peace fabrics?
Mia Smith (1 year ago)
This makes me cringe at my shopping habits in my younger years. These videos should be very useful to young people with the excitement of earning their own incomes but lack the knowledge about sustainable fashion. I'm very curious myself about tencel- I guess that's in the next episode. Thank you Daria!
Tamara Khan (1 year ago)

I have made the conscious decision to no longer buy any leather/animal clothing items, unless it is second hand
Thrift Therapy (1 year ago)
So informative, I learned a lot! It's also a concern that even if the natural fibers are biodegradable, what about the dyes in them being toxic too?
Carasforever (1 year ago)
Angora is extremely cruel. https://youtu.be/Wjy8e8KNhbM Wool is extremely cruel no matter if it's organic or not. This is an video everyone should watch https://youtu.be/siTvjWE2aVw

This is such a good and informative video. In the south of Chile, sheep grow in more natural conditions, even though the Haciendas have thousands of sheep, the space for them to run, eat grass and grow is vast. Most of our wool is exported, so we are a source of natural and cruelty free wool... but I guess not everywhere has the same conditions. You have taught me several new concepts today, thank you very much ☺
Daria Andronescu (1 year ago)
+Pilar Guerrero thanks for sharing! Chile wool for everybody! ❤️

Daria Andronescu (1 year ago)

Lydia K (1 year ago)
Awesome video! Saved it. Have a question about the mixing fabric issue (8:43) if the fabric is, let's say, 50% cotton / 50% linen is it also can't be recycled or it takes much more time to be recycled? Both fabric are natural. Thanks.
Patriot Jefferson (2 months ago)
Lydia K , it can be "reused", crafted into something new.
Daria Andronescu (1 year ago)
+Lydia Kiptila the things is that we don't have the technology yet that would allow us to separate different types of yarns. But at least these blended fabrics that include only natural fibers like in your example, are biodegradable.
Sun Light (1 year ago)
Thank you, really impressed. I'd like to know more about the colouring process for fabrics. Can this also be done ethically/sustainably?
Daria Andronescu (1 year ago)
+Sun Light yes, it can be done ethically, using natural dyes made out of mostly vegetables. But not a lot of brands care about it, because it's more complicated, expensive and time consuming.
ilovepavlovanomnom (1 year ago)

I am THRILLED you are doing this series!!!! Will you please add a segment on specific retailers or companies that are both fashion forward and sustainable? And a segment on how choosing better quality will eventually be budget friendly (e.g. comparing the cost of "fast fashion" with sustainable fashion, not just environmentally, but financially on our own pocket books. Please? Pretty please? (I want to be more fashion forward, have better quality clothes, make more conscious and specific choices, and be sustainable (environmentally and morally/ethically). And I want to look more sophisticated and age appropriate. I want to start with your advice!! :)
Daria Andronescu (1 year ago)
+michaelvictoriareese, thank you! I am so glad you like the idea! I already have this guide about affordable fashion forward eco brands here: http://wonder-wardrobe.com/blog/affordable-ethical-fashion I am pretty sure you'll find there many alternative to mass market brands

Marie Bach (1 year ago)
Great video, Daria! :) how can clothes be recycled? I have never seen a fabric recycling container in my city. I always struggle what to do with old clothes, because donating isn't that great for many reasons, and not always can I sell them at an appropriate price. Recycling would be a great alternative!
Marie Bach (1 year ago)
Daria Andronescu thank you very much! :)
Daria Andronescu (1 year ago)
+Marie Bach this is something you need to google by yourself. But if you have H&M store close by you can give it to them for recycling. I also found this list of other brands that also collect old clothes: http://mashable.com/2015/11/08/recycle-used-clothing/#rNg68Yu2Liq5

Really great job on this video Daria! I sew my own clothes and always work to pick fabrics that are sustainable (not always easy!) - while watching your video I noticed you didn't mention bamboo which is another sustainable fabric choice I think? What is your opinion?
Daria Andronescu (2 months ago)
Why?
Patriot Jefferson (2 months ago)
Kathleen Meadows , bamboo is EXTREMELY bad for the environment!
Daria Andronescu (1 year ago)
+Kathleen Meadows We'll talk about bamboo fabrics next time, because they are not natural, but semisynthetic and require use of heavy chemicals.
Rosa Mancuso (1 year ago)

+KatRies1 thank you!! I am glad you found it useful! 🌿❤️🌿
NotOfThisAge (1 year ago)
Very informative video. I look forward to the next one. And I would love to hear about the environmental impact if Lyocell (from bamboo). Regarding rabbit wool I would add that angora rabbits suffer so much when they are shaved. Some even die due to the shock and pain of it. I saw a video of it and it broke my heart. I'm sad to hear that sheep don't fare too much better. In Romania we still farm sheep on a small scale and that ensures better quality of life I think.
Daria Andronescu (1 year ago)
+NotOfThisAge yes I've read about the angora rabbits too around 2 years ago. And now I am just trying to skip Angora wool in general. Animal abuse is a very sad and serious issue that need to be taken more seriously.

How is peace silk produced? As opposed to regular silk
Daria Andronescu (1 year ago)
The peace silk production happens when the silk is extracted after the silkworm has completed metamorphosis and emerged from the cocoon as a moth. Basically, all the silkworms survive and become a moth. In traditional production the silkworms are killed before they even transformed into the moths.

What are your go-to sustainable fabrics? Let’s chat!
The Big Screen Theory (5 months ago)
I went threw my closet and removed most of the pieces that contained polyester (60% or more). I didn't donate it, because the issue of when you first have bought the clothes is washing them (micro-plastic). I also threw out most of the acrylic fabric based clothes. No wonder they went so harsh and dissatisfying after the third wash! I still keep my viscose and nylon clothes because they are not as toxic as the polyester on the skin.
Veronica Moullaianova (1 year ago)
Loved your video, Daria! Well explained. To the point. Easy to understand. Nice job ;-).  I recently talked about organic cotton vs traditional cotton vs Tencel in one of my 'Sustainable Fashion Talks' and I concluded with the fact that organic cotton, and organic fibers in general, are the better option. Of course, it's not only about WHAT you buy, it's also about HOW MUCH you purchase and HOW you treat your clothes & accessories.  Looking forward to part 2 and 3 of these series! Love, Veronica

Thank you for your amazing work! So very informative! I am currently attempting to transition to a more sustainable wardrobe, and trying to reduce my environmental fashion footprint. I have bought all my clothing pre-owned as well for the past year, and I am loving the process! I will definitely pay more attention to fabrics as well from now on. Currently on my favorites: Linen!
