i-Cons: Vivienne Westwood

8906 ratings | 294702 views
Over the course five decades, the girl born Vivienne Isabel Swire has gone from punk-provocateur to Britain’s best loved fashion designer. Raised in the D.I.Y. climate of post-war Derbyshire, it was 1970s London where she opened the Kings Road boutique that launched her name and, along with co-conspirator Malcolm McLaren, gave birth to Britain’s most defining youth movement: punk. In the years that followed - from Pirates to Mini Crini, Harris Tweed to the present day - she plundered history, pioneering the idea that fashion could be about more than just clothes - it could be about protest too. Join us, as we meet the incendiary grande dame behind the name, and discover more about a bone fide i-D icon: Vivienne Westwood. Punk was the music, then the fashion. The Ramones prove that fact 100% and if you want to go back, Proto-Punk bands had made the music before the fashion.

7:30 Does she truly mean that there are NO artists today? I would disagree. There are certainly artists with vision today who strive to make beautiful things. I would be curious to hear who Westwood considers to be the last artist.

Vivienne KNOWS WHATS UP. Her opinion on todays art reflects perfectly with what I see today. It is ugly, without purpose and people are only in it for the cash.

Vivienne Westwood actually said that people who can't afford to buy organic food should eat less. Thank God all she is is a lousy fashion designer and not someone with any real credibility!
Nim (1 year ago)
I studied Vivienne during my course at school and she changed who I looked at fashion and just life in general. She changed a lot of things for the fashion industry and not many people know of her. She should get more recognition for what she's done for fashion and history of fashion

grrr.... let me begin by saying I have alot of respect for what her and Malcolm were doing in England, but it was in NO way an original idea, hence the "music came second" comment. Malcolm had traveled to NY and "Plundered" the punk rock scene's fashions there , which happened much more organically. He traveled back to England and basically put together the pistols as an ad for their shop. Second, her son is an asshole. Publicly, he burned several articles of clothing from the Seditionaries and Sex era. Things that belong in museums. And here she is saying you can't forget the past or 'throw out the old ways' ..... There's just alot of weird hypocrisy here, and barely any mention of Malcolm, who has since passed, and was the idea man behind the entire aesthetic that got her noticed in the first place.
Solomon Andrade (1 year ago)
I'm glad I wasn't the only one wincing at how ignorant the interviewer was about the punk culture which preceded the 70's and the 80's. How could he overlook influential iconic proto-punk bands like The Stooges and The Velvet Underground? If anyone should be credited for the punk movement, it should be accredited to the noteworthy musicians who had influenced the movement like Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, or Nico. Hell, I'd rather credit Warhol for inventing punk rather than Vivienne.

My daughter did work experience at Vivienne Westwood Battersea. At the end of her eight weeks there she was told that Vivienne had said she could chose any three items in the warehouse. Some things were so expensive, like two grand!! My daughter chose three moderate items and was given some perfume and a scarf extra to that. My daughter had worked with Vivienne, just the two of them, several times. She is a wonderful down to earth talented icon. An amazing part of our fashion history.
That's a very interesting story. I swear down, my sister wrote a letter to Vivan Westwood (age 13 or 14, so this would have been early 1990's) asking for work experience in her one and only fashion house. The fashion house wrote back saying that they just didn't have the time to take her on. However, they were impressed by the fact that such a young girl actually knew who she was, had taken an interest in them & wrote to them asking for an opportunity so (for future encouragement) they invited her for a guided tour, which of course she excepted. So off she and my mum went for a guided tour around the Vivian Westwood's fashion house. My sister never meet V.Westwood. She wasn't around. The impression we got is that she's a busy women. However, i'll never forget my sister saying they were in the middle of putting together some kind of dress that was in the tens of thousands of pounds and that's not an exaggeration. She ended up getting work experience in some low end fashion house over in Leytonstone. Anyway, it's all water under the bridge as she eventually ended working in shipping. However and to this day I'm still very proud that my sister wrote to her at such a young age. BTW and IF you read this Vivian. "Thanks" for letting my mum & sister have a guided tour around your fashion house. I'm her older & useless brother and I think your brilliant xxx

I remember meeting her in her shop in Kings Road, Punk Music and Punk Clothes were not my thing, although I did go to check it out. I think Vivienne did great with her talents and skills, a huge success for that rebel. Certainly she is correct about history, history and our cultures are so important.
