How to gain control of your free time | Laura Vanderkam

85813 ratings | 3807290 views
There are 168 hours in each week. How do we find time for what matters most? Time management expert Laura Vanderkam studies how busy people spend their lives, and she's discovered that many of us drastically overestimate our commitments each week, while underestimating the time we have to ourselves. She offers a few practical strategies to help find more time for what matters to us, so we can "build the lives we want in the time we've got." TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Look for talks on Technology, Entertainment and Design -- plus science, business, global issues, the arts and much more. a mistranslation in korean not "저는 가끔 잡지사로부터 어떤 기사에 관해 취재 요청을 받습니다. " but rather "저는 종종 이러한 주제로 기사를 쓰는 잡지사들에 관해 듣곤합니다." you're welcome.

I'm sorry, but no. If you work eight hours a day and sleep for eight hours, that leaves you eight hours a day during the week for the following: washing, dressing, cooking, eating, commuting, shopping, tidying, cleaning, laundry, exercise, repair work and a social life. It sounds like a lot, but it really isn't. If you have a two hour round commute, you immediately drop to six hours a day: say, two in the morning and four in the evening. This is how people find their weekends end up full of drudge work. And you can pretty much forget it if you have children under 5. I do wish these people would be honest about their resources. Do they have nannies, cleaners, house keepers, gardeners, PAs? It's far easier to find time for things when you have outsourced any domestic work and four of your six children are at schools with significant after-school programmes. It's just not honest.

time is based on speed and space. we used to say I am 50 years old or he 38 year old. actually how he can calculate his time. it's sound I think not perfect. as my thought, no one can calculate human lifetime. there is no machine to calculate human lifetime. we calculate earth time. after we born earth passes 30 years this sounds perfect
Shubhi (15 days ago)
Well maybe you have a lot of time, but you also need to do energy management which is the harder part. You can't work or do something throughout the day without breaks.

They key of this video is that we always find time for URGENT things. Try avoid URGENT by taking care about it beforehand, and define priorities for other things similarly, if we really need something then it is URGENT and we'll find time for it.

I like the content of her talk, her delivery of puns or jokes needs work - she should take time to improve on that

I had 30 days of vacation but I was really lazy.I went  to bed at 3am and woke up at 11am:-(I wasted my timeI had a lot of time but I didn't do anything. But I learned something very important for my whole life."Doing nothing in free time makes me crazy."From this year I will be very busy .A lot of homeworks and bunch of tests.....so this vacation was my last vacation  before I become adult. So I decided to think positively.I enjoyed my free time.I realized that I wasted my time(very thankful to know this) and now I'm trying to do something.I just don't want to make same mistake on next vacation so I'm writting this.

her argument about 7 hrs and the water heater is utterly flawed! she doesnt mention how that lady came up with that 7 hours, what things she did without or neglected for that time period. Also the water heater was an emergency, teaching people or training isnt. As soon as I saw the ted women logo I should have left !

This is very true and is all about perspective change which is very important, However, I think a big issue is also not having the energy to do the things you want to do even if you know you have the time. Okay, work takes 8 hours out of your day which leaves time for other things but how much of your energy is spent on that? It must be a combination of time and energy that allows you to do these things, not just time.

Wait 40 hrs a week And 50 hours a sleep in 168 hrs We have 72 hours to do other things Are u assuming that we wake up and the next second We are at work ? I mean how about the hrs that take us to shower, get ready, commute to work, come back, have dinner, some entertainment and sleep
Rik Wichers (1 month ago)
Very inspiring! Like the 3 category approach 😊

"she found 7 hours in her week" - yes maybe she took some hours off and has you work more hours next week? maybe she is sleep deprived? maybe she skipped her work out to fix her heater? none of it is good.

The woman who 'found' 7 hours to deal with the flood crisis - the logic - 'Well, if you can find 7 hours that week, why not use 7 hours every week to train for a triathlon?'. OK, but to deal with that crisis she may have cancelled time with friends, helping her kids with their homework etc. So yes, she could do the same every week and train for a triathlon - BUT SHE WOULD END UP WITH NO FRIENDS AND HATED BY HER KIDS (with amazing abs to console her).
Lulla C (1 month ago)
I just wrote a very similar feedback. It makes all busy people look like flakes who can't get their priorities straight and waste time doing god knows what.
KathySolita (1 month ago)
Exactly!! Also she might have pushed some of the duties for that week for the next week; but that doesn't mean she can do that every week
Ligeia D.Aurevilly (1 month ago)
You are absolutely right, John. Life is about choices. You can't have it all

I liked the talk but I also feel like there is nothing new in this talk. She is not saying anything new that all the other so-called motivational gurus are saying already. Calling herself a time management "expert" is slightly bothering me. Man, these misleading "how to" ted titles must go away. Again, not saying the talk is bad, she is definitely a good speaker but I think it needs a more clear demonstration of the "how" part.

The message I get is to get the best of anything you are doing with your time. If you are working, then work effectively; if you are resting, let your mind totally rest; if you are spending time with your family and beloved ones, either eating, playing, having fun with them, make every minute counts by caring, loving them. And even if you are on Youtube, you watch these videos on purposes, either you have fun or you are here to gain knowledge. So, it's another way of saying: "be present" & "be purposeful". Thank Ted and Laura for reminding me of that.
