TV Journalist Quits His Job to Live on a Tiny House Boat & Cruise UK Canals Full-Time

25868 ratings | 2020515 views
In this video, we meet David Johns, a former TV journalist from the UK who quit his job, sold his house, and bought a narrowboat to cruise the canal network. His plan was to try being a live aboard for a year. He’s been living aboard for 9 months so far and he’s still happy with his decision and loves being part of the friendly, helpful narrowboat community. Watch this video to take a tour of David's narrowboat, learn how he earns an income as a freelance journalist, where he “parks” his boat, and about the joys & challenges of life afloat. David has been documenting his journey living on a boat with a regular vlog on his YouTube channel: Cruising the Cut (https://www.youtube.com/CruisingTheCutUK). With his experience as a TV journalist, the videos are extremely well filmed and edited, and they're a real pleasure to watch. We were excited when he sent us his interview footage because we learned so much about this alternative lifestyle that he’s trying out. We love the idea of living in a tiny house on the water and of being able to explore from the comfort of your own home (a lot like living in a van!). Thanks for watching! That "cosy romanticism " you mention when it is chucking it down (about 17m50s in) is called "hygge" in Danish :) Love canal boating.

I am claustrophobic but I think I could live in this because it's so open and there is plenty of room lengthwise. This is a good way to see places. So a thumbs up.

That was so fascinating and well presented! One thing that amazes me most is how you are able to steer that boat through the sometimes really narrow canals without hitting anything? I mean, you steer it from the back of the boat, how on earth can you see what's happening at the front? I guess you learn in time, but I would imagine you need some kind of steering permit and lessons as well?

I would imagine the folks have slowed down (lifestyle wise) and with less housework generally happier & more time to socialize.

Costs? This looks too good to buy and be close to London without going broke, so there has to be a hidden catch that will sack your wallet.

How much does a long boat like yours cost? I assume it was pre-used when you bought it. Are these boats readily available?

I use my little farm the same way except stationery. Love those beautiful canals. I quit the rat race in 1998 and my wife and I (now 65 years young) love our little life together. Married 46 years now to the same sweetheart. We have a lot of fun and many advantages now. Eggs from our chickens, fruit from our orchard and peace and quiet. Neither of us has worked 9 to 5 jobs for 20 years now. I made it free lansing as well but you need unique skills for that or you need to be a pretty good enterprenuer. Fortunately I am both plus I had sufficient experience to build our house, infrastructure and out buildings alone. Not as much money now but no regrets and so nice to have things all paid for.

He keeps mentioning filling up his water tanks... doesn't the UK get a lot of rain? If he has solar panels for his own power why not his own water collection and filtration system?

Here is what's great with technology these days. For heat and hot water a small diesel water heater made for boats and RVs. It can be used for hot water and central heat and burn very little fuel. You can ever get diesel fueled cook tops

When you say 'Just went off touring..." how much time had you spent actually steering a long boat, or any boat before "just going off?" Quite a bit, I'd venture. Can't imagine trying to do this as a newbie or even a minimally experienced person.
CruisingTheCut (1 month ago)
Caroline Paquier I had one day on a narrowboat before I decided to buy mine.

How about safety? Do you get break-ins or anti-social people damaging your boat or threatening your safety? I see you park your boat at sparsely populated area sometimes.

landongsi I haven't, yet, though it does happen but then it can happen when you live in a house too...

Seems more like he got fired because he "quit" but still wants to work? From his website: "In October 2015, David quit his job and went to live on a narrowboat where he's now making YouTube videos and writing articles about life afloat. He's delighted to welcome any and all offers of freelance work, from presenting to training to video production."

+CruisingTheCut Good point, i would do the same, good luck in the future brother.
CruisingTheCut (1 month ago)
Stream Highlights I did not get fired. I quit, exactly as stated, of my own volition. This does not mean I don't wish to continue working in some form, to pay the bills.
I live in Singapore. How I wish to be there with the community.

I only came here because a former work colleague (Benjamin) who sat behind me lived on a boat and he was always buying stuff for his boat and he built this mini fridge and buying Lubricant for his boat and so forth. I didn't realise it was this cool to live on a boat. How much does a brand new boat like this cost? I would like to find out more.
CruisingTheCut (1 month ago)
SOAPSTONE BIRD New boats costs anything from £80k-£150k (or more, if you wish!)

May i ask how deep is this canal on average?? :)
CruisingTheCut (1 month ago)
John Eberhardt They're typically just a few feet - 4 or 5 maybe, enough to float a barge loaded with cargo, that's all that was needed when they were built.

Great video, but I couldnt help but think something was missing. You need a cat. Your life looks way cool, but kinda lonely. If you had a cat, you and vids would look a lot warmer. Plus interacting with a cute cat in vids would get you more viewers. There are more cat vids on youtube than anything else, there is a reason. People see cute feline and it pulls at there heart strings immediately. GET A CAT!

If you drink the water in your tank, you should use an RV hose, which is a lot like a garden hose but made out of non-toxic materials
